Volunteer at the Eco Community Center on the Sunshine Coast

  • In the middle of nature
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Work outdoors

Are you interested in sustainability and environmental protection and want to learn more about living in harmony with nature? Then our volunteer project in the Eco Community in Australia is just right for you!

On site you live in the middle of the nature of the famous Sunshine Coast, up close to kangaroos and kookaburras (if you are lucky you might even spot a platypus). Here you can support the sustainable community in their daily tasks and in return learn about environmentally friendly agriculture and sustainable lifestyles. By the way, you also do your bit for the protection of species in Australia by helping to preserve the unique ecosystems.

Volunteering in the Eco Community in East Queensland

What's the matter?

Your place of work is an international community that organizes various projects related to nature and sustainability on a 40-hectare piece of land. All this is organized by a non-profit organization. The members deal with ways of organizing human coexistence as sustainably as possible. And not only with regard to environmental issues, but also in an economic and social sense.

The community has its own permacultures for growing fruit and vegetables and covers most of its energy requirements with its own photovoltaic systems. The community is also committed to the regeneration and restoration of natural ecosystems. There are also accommodations for tourists on the organization's own premises and various events are organised. The aim is to bring the visitors closer to sustainability, health and nature topics.

In recent years, the number of endangered species in Australia has risen sharply. This development is of particular concern as many of the endangered species are threatened with extinction as they are exclusively found on the red continent. Researchers cite mining, invasive (introduced) species, climate change and the ongoing clearing of forest areas as the main reasons for this. The latter especially for livestock and agriculture.

In summary, one could say: The fact that the Australian ecosystems are on the verge of collapse is mainly due to the way people deal with nature. In order to preserve ecosystems and their biodiversity, it is high time to rethink our relationship with nature. Alternative concepts are urgently needed, especially for the production of food, energy and other consumer goods.

The eco-community that you support during your volunteer work has been thinking through and testing such alternatives for almost 20 years now. For example, various approaches to environmentally friendly agriculture are also put into practice there.

With your commitment you can support the organization to become a completely self-sufficient, sustainable community. For self-sufficiency, the sustainable community grows its own food, produces green energy independently and relies on other alternative concepts, such as composting toilets.

In addition to the accommodation, events and retreats, the neighborhood will also be provided with their own food and other natural products in the future. Among other things, to finance the project. You can also support the community in their goal of making sustainable lifestyles known beyond the boundaries of the project.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your tasks in the sustainable community will vary depending on your skills and interests. Your activities could look something like this:

  • Help with gardening and growing food
  • Cooking for the joint dinners or for the in-house catering
  • Help with cleaning, tidying up and maintaining the facility
  • Depending on your skills: Marketing activities and video production

Your workplace is located directly on the organization's premises, so you won't have a long commute to work. During the initial phase of the project, one of the team members will always be at your side to familiarize you with your activities.

Working hours: Just like your tasks on site, your working hours are also flexible. What is certain, however, is that you will work five hours a day, five days a week. You then agree your exact working hours with the team at the location.

Accommodation Catering

Your accommodation at the Volunteer House in East Queensland

Volunteer House in East Queensland

Your Eco-Retreat accommodation is in an old farmhouse that has been converted into a community house and can accommodate up to six volunteers. As a volunteer you will sleep in a three-bed room and you will also share the kitchen and living room with the other employees. There is also a large hall that you can use for dancing or doing yoga, for example.

There are many composting toilets scattered around the site. You will find a regular toilet and showers in your accommodation. There is also an internet connection and telephones that you can use. The (vegetarian) groceries on site are included, but the volunteers and employees take care of the cooking themselves.

Important: Pets, alcohol, smoking and illegal drugs are prohibited in the accommodation and on the premises of your project.

Location

East Queensland

The region in East Queensland is known for the famous Great Barrier Reef, the tropical islands, countless beautiful beaches, evergreen hills, diverse rainforests and many interesting national parks.

The project site is in a rural area about half an hour from the coast. Numerous national parks, beaches and rivers as well as beautiful natural scenery are very close by, such as the well-known Glass House Mountains. Big cities like Sunshine Coast or Brisbane can be reached in about an hour and a half by car or public transport. It takes about an hour to get to the tourist town of Gold Coast.

If you are interested in life in an eco-community, you like to explore the rural regions, but you don't want to miss out on trips to big cities and the coast, then our location in East Queensland is certainly a good choice for you! Immerse yourself in a sustainable lifestyle and discover Down Under!

Your free time in East Queensland

There is a hall directly in your accommodation that you and the other volunteers can use for dancing, yoga or sports. Occasionally, the community also organizes yoga retreats or yoga and meditation courses for their guests, which you can also participate in as a volunteer.

Around the Eco-Retreat, various national parks with ancient forests, hilly green landscapes and spectacular waterfalls offer enough space for outdoor experiences and adventures. If you prefer the urban flair and want to drift through the city surrounded by people, the major cities of Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast can each be reached in one to two hours. Here you can also go out, shop or try the diverse culinary offerings of the metropolises.

The Pacific Coast, about half an hour away, is perfect for a day trip. In less than an hour you can reach the tourist dream destination of Noosa Heads and countless miles of white sandy beaches. You won't find a better place on the continent to relax, surf and enjoy some of Australia's most beautiful sunrises.

If you have a little more time and are interested in Australia's unique (underwater) water world, you should definitely visit the Great Barrier Reef and the paradisiacal islands along the coast. On an area larger than Germany you can relax, snorkel and be enchanted by the hustle and bustle under water.

On-site procedure

Arrivals

After you land at the airport, you will be picked up by a team member. After a 50-minute drive you arrive at the project site and get a short introduction to the local conditions. Alternatively, you can be picked up from the nearby train station. The journey to the accommodation then takes about 15 minutes.

Your orientation program

The orientation program starts right on your first day. Here you will get to know your accommodation, the staff and the site during a 2-hour tour. The house rules and everything else you need to know will also be explained to you.

The first day in the project

Before you start working, you first discuss your tasks and working hours with your contact person. You will then start work on either the first or second day at the location. You will mainly need your first day at work for orientation. However, you may also be able to take on smaller tasks.
