You can get involved in these areas

Social work

Although Asia is often referred to as the "engine of the world economy" thanks to some constantly growing national economies, many Asians still face serious social problems. Social inequality is growing, especially in the periphery of the continent, as people here only benefit little from the economic upswing It is all the sadder that poverty, a lack of prospects and crime usually affect those who already belong to low-income or disadvantaged sections of the population the most.

If you want to help in Asia to support those who are socially and structurally the worst, you can sign up for our project in Nepal, for example Care of children and young people engage.

Teaching

The education system shows once again how big the differences between the various countries and regions of Asia are. Countries like South Korea, Japan and Singapore regularly end up in the top group in global education studies. In other countries, for example in Nepal, the situation is unfortunately much worse. Overcrowded classes, too few, often poorly trained teachers and high school fees mean that many children do not have access to a good school education. As a result, many young people remain below their potential and often even illiterate.

Various projects and organizations in Asia have made it their mission to give disadvantaged children access to education and thus a chance for social advancement. Your support is here, for example, at Teaching at a school in Nepal .

Animals & Wildlife

Thanks to the size of Asia alone, there are countless unique natural landscapes that are home to millions of animal and plant species. And while many people benefit from economic growth, Asia's ecosystems are threatened more than ever by growing cities, increasing deforestation and expanding agriculture and industry. There is also a gigantic (plastic) waste problem. As a result, rare animal species such as orangutans and sea turtles are now threatened with extinction.

If you want to campaign for the preservation of the environment and biodiversity in Asia, you can, for example, at the Paper recycling project in Nepal help.

RGV destination countries for your sabbatical in Asia

Nepal

Nepal is a relatively small country in South Asia, bordered by China to the north and India to the south. Despite its position between these populous political heavyweights, it is one of the poorest and least developed countries on earth.

Nepal is best known for its mountains. Believe it or not, eight of the ten highest mountains on earth are located in the small state in the Himalayas. Among other things, the highest mountain in the world - Mount Everest. But there are also exciting places away from the high mountains that you can explore during your sabbatical. An example of this is the Chitwan National Park, whose dense jungle is one of the last natural retreats for rare animals such as rhinos or Bengal tigers.

Another must-see in Nepal is the capital, Kathmandu. The former hippie Mecca has now become one of South Asia's hottest travel destinations. Today, the diverse city of millions is the starting point for trekking tours and at the same time a dream destination for all culture lovers who want to marvel at ancient temples and pagodas, narrow streets, colorful markets and countless UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Your sabbatical in Asia - What else is important?

What requirement should you meet?

As you can see, there are many different opportunities for you in Asia. Each project brings with it its own challenges. Skills and knowledge in the respective areas of activity are of course very welcome in the projects, but are usually not a prerequisite for your commitment. For initial orientation, you will find a requirements profile in the project descriptions, which gives you information as to whether a project is fundamentally suitable for you. Working with children, for example, requires a lot of patience and a certain sensitivity. The most important thing, however, is that you approach your programs on site with interest, openness and motivation.

How long can you commit?

It is very important to us that you create sustainable added value for yourself and for your project on site with your stay in Asia. In order for this to succeed, it takes a certain amount of time to get used to it, so that you can integrate into the community at the site and develop a routine at work. Therefore, there is a minimum duration for all our projects. This is usually two to four weeks. The maximum duration for your sabbatical with RGV varies from several weeks to a year, depending on the project and the country of destination. If you need help planning your stay abroad, our RGV coordinators will be happy to help you at any time.
