Project in the permaculture garden in Bali

What's the matter?

The organization focuses specifically on local and organic farming. The focus of their work is to prevent organic waste from simply being disposed of. Because by collecting expired products from local stands and shops, the so-called "black gold" is produced here - the valuable compost. This is used, among other things, for their own 2000 square meter permaculture garden. A variety of plants grow here that need regular care. The chickens and cows that live on the farm serve to feed on invasive pests while contributing to the nutrient supply of the soil in the form of excrement. Regular community events also take place here, as well as lots of projects where like-minded people work together to achieve the goal of sustainable agriculture. The garden is a place for encounters, networking and education.

The use of chemicals in agriculture has expanded throughout agriculture over the past few centuries, resulting in contamination of soil, water and vegetation. These pesticides, which remain in the soil years or even decades after application, have been shown to degrade and damage soil microbial communities. Despite attempts to regulate the effects of chemicals in agriculture, pesticide use continues to be widespread, leading to agricultural degradation and losses. Permaculture offers an alternative to destructive chemical agriculture, where agricultural ecosystems grow in ways that promote sustainability, regeneration and self-sufficiency. Instead of mass production at the expense of quality, sustainable agriculture offers an orientation for an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

The goal of permaculture is to preserve and teach the wisdom of local agriculture, thereby inspiring people to be more concerned with an eco-friendly lifestyle, their food and the ecosystem. Taking only what is necessary and giving back more than you took is the mentality that has guided and will continue to guide the garden and the broader permaculture community. This attitude and knowledge should also be passed on to the younger generations. In the long term, the company also wants to create more social initiatives for farmers in Bali. It also wants to set up cooperatives to give farmers a say in local supply chains and markets. Last but not least, the project should help to build bridges between the local population and the immigrants and to form networks.

Your tasks as a volunteer

The work in the permaculture garden is very varied. You will support the team with the following tasks, for example:

  • Garden and nursery maintenance
  • planting and irrigation
  • Collecting expired products and making compost
  • Distribute food to the needy
  • Assisting in the improvement of agricultural systems based on the principles of permaculture
  • Marketing of community events and courses on the website and in social media
  • Creation of lessons about permaculture for children
  • Guided tours through the garden
  • Cleaning the chicken coop
  • Egg production monitoring

You will get to know all areas of the project and gain a wide range of experiences. Depending on their competence, however, volunteers can also focus more on a specific area.

In addition, the organization is always on the lookout for fresh ideas, whether for keeping chickens, flower gardens, community events or online presence. Here you can get involved according to your interests and skills!

You normally work Monday to Friday from 7am to 12pm. You have the weekends free and can explore the area independently. The activities vary daily and it is therefore difficult to map an exact daily routine. Basically, however, you can imagine your working day as follows: Normally, the day begins with composting or cleaning the chicken coop. Then you and the rest of the team tend the garden and nursery by planting, watering and harvesting. Between 9am and 10am everyone goes to the bamboo hut to help with the assigned projects. The projects include, for example, the design of lessons for the children, monitoring egg production or creating a tour of the garden. The working day ends with a delicious homemade lunch.

When community events take place, you also help with the preparation, construction, etc. The events are as diverse as the garden itself: from workshops to markets and live music, everything is included.

The recommended time to help out in the permaculture garden is from March to the end of November. December to February is the rainy season in Bali. During this time, the project will continue to take place, but the working hours can be different because they are based on the weather.

For the project you should have good knowledge of English. You should also enjoy gardening and be interested in permaculture, regenerative agriculture and food growing. If you already have practical experience, whether in marketing, SEO, social media or as a gardener, engineer, electrician, ... - you can always use your individual strengths here! Digital nomads who want to contribute their skills to the permaculture community are also welcome.

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation in Canggu - Bali

Your accommodation is in Serenity 2, a branch of Serenity Eco Guest Houses. There, permaculture is practiced with the limited resources at your disposal, such as reduced plastic consumption, composting and waste separation.

You will be accommodated together with other volunteers in a cozy dormitory (2-4 people) with a shared bathroom. Common rooms, kitchen and WiFi are available and your room will be cleaned once a week. Nevertheless, the volunteers are asked to keep the rooms clean at all times. Because the Guest House is in the center of town, numerous restaurants, cafes and shops are within a 5 minute motorbike ride or 15 minute walk. You can reach the site by motorbike in about 10 minutes.

Location

Canggu in Bali

Canggu

The Canggu project site is located in the southwest of Bali, directly on the coast. Although the place itself is rather small, there is a lot to see and do here. Beautiful beaches and landscapes are right on your doorstep. But the town also has many interesting restaurants, cafés and shops to offer.

Canggu is very popular among travellers, which means you can meet, exchange ideas and network with people from all over the world. Bali has generally been considered a hotspot of digital bohemia for years and attracts countless backpackers and digital nomads every year. But you will also meet yoga tourists, package holidaymakers, surfers and many others here!

So Bali offers something for everyone: Whether you like exploring nature or cities, are looking for the best surfing wave or the best yoga spot, are interested in local culture, cuisine or nightlife. If you are also committed to environmental and sustainability issues and would like to learn more about them, you have definitely come to the right place.

Free time in Bali

Your free time in Canggu

Bali offers you a wide range of leisure activities. During the weekdays you can walk from your accommodation to the beach after work and relax or surf there. The coast is only a five-minute walk away. You can also explore the many cafés and restaurants with the other volunteers. In the evening you can then discover the bars and night markets, because the area offers a vibrant nightlife. The area is considered safe both during the day and at night, even if you are traveling alone.

On the weekends you can go on excursions. With a rented motorcycle or a motorcycle taxi you can visit many exciting temples, such as the impressive Hindu water temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan or Pura Tanah Lot. The Besikalung Forest is also worth a visit with its wildlife and breathtaking nature. During the trip you can enjoy the beautiful landscape with palm trees and rice terraces. With a bit of luck, you might experience a small or large festival on site!

In addition, some cities are just an hour's drive away. For example Ubud - especially popular among veggie and yoga fans - or Kuta - perfect for going out or surfing. In Bali's largest city, Denpansar, you can learn more about Indonesia's history and culture in museums and temples, or explore the local beach.

The orientation program starts the next day directly at the accommodation. One of the founders of the company will introduce you and the other new volunteers to the project and show you the area around the accommodation, the beach, the supermarket and the way to the project site.
