Why you should consider volunteering in Zanzibar

Zanzibar - a breathtaking place with an impressive natural, water and animal world. The warm hospitality of the local people, the way of life and the delicious cuisine make Zanzibar a unique and exciting region.

However, there are also some challenges in Zanzibar, which are particularly related to the development and preservation of the archipelago. Because the increasing number of tourists has an impact on the environment of Zanzibar. The increase in litter, particularly plastic waste, poses a serious threat to ecosystems and the animals that live within them. There is also a risk of overfishing and damage to coral reefs from improper diving and snorkeling practices. It is therefore of great importance to promote measures to protect the environment and to make the issue of sustainability present.

Although the tourism sector creates jobs, high levels of poverty still exist in some communities in Zanzibar. The differences in income are often large, and the quality of education plays an existential role, both in relation to the topic of sustainability and in terms of qualification as a worker or medical specialist. There is a shortage of workers in Zanzibar, which is partly due to the insufficient training opportunities, especially language skills and professional skills.

Furthermore, the infrastructure on Zanzibar, especially roads and transport options, is often insufficiently developed. Above all, however, the health infrastructure in rural areas of Zanzibar can be expanded. There is often a lack of equipped medical facilities, specialist staff and adequate equipment. This leads to limited access to quality medical care for the population.

Despite these challenges, local governments, NGOs and the tourism industry are working to find solutions and promote Zanzibar's sustainable development. Our volunteer projects in Zanzibar also aim to preserve the unique beauty of the archipelago while at the same time offering the locals opportunities for improved living conditions. Do volunteer work in Zanzibar and work to improve the reality of people's lives and to preserve the diversity of nature and animals!

General Info - Zanzibar

Zanzibar, also known as the "Spice Islands", is a beautiful tropical paradise off the coast of Tanzania. Located in the Indian Ocean off East Africa, the archipelago consists of two main islands, Unguja and Pemba, and several smaller islands. Zanzibar is very multifaceted and combines a rich history, breathtaking nature and unique living environments.

The history of Zanzibar is characterized by trade and cultural diversity. The archipelago was an important hub in the spice trade and was influenced by Arabs, Persians, Indians and European seafarers. This cultural influence is still clearly visible in the architecture, the cuisine and the way of life of the people in Zanzibar today.

The main island of Unguja is the center of Zanzibar. Here is the historic old town of Stone Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stone Town is a labyrinth of narrow streets, characterized by an oriental influence. Here you can experience the history of the island up close and admire many impressive buildings, such as the old sultan's palace or the Anglican cathedral.

The white sandy beaches, the turquoise blue water and the rich underwater world of Zanzibar are also unique. The archipelago has a diverse flora and fauna, including some endangered species. Zanzibar is home to stunning nature and diverse wildlife that offers a unique combination of tropical vegetation, pristine beaches and a rich marine environment.

On the archipelago you will find an abundance of exotic plants and flowers - from tropical vegetation with dense palm groves and mangrove swamps to lush spice plantations, for which Zanzibar is particularly well known. The scent of this runs through the island and gives it a very special character.

A spectacular underwater world hides beneath the surface of the water around the islands. The colorful coral reefs around Zanzibar are home to an incredible variety of marine life. The wildlife of Zanzibar includes some unique species. One of the most famous is the giant tortoise, but there are also numerous species of birds, including colorful birds of paradise, cormorants and white-tailed eagles that populate the skies over the islands.

The locals of Zanzibar are known for their hospitality and warmth. In addition, the local life is also characterized by a lot of music and dances. Swahili music, also known as taarab, originated in Zanzibar and is a mixture of Arabic, Indian and African influences.

Your free time in Zanzibar

In Zanzibar you have an incredible number of opportunities to make your free time from your volunteer work varied, exciting, relaxing or informative. Whether you want to explore the rich history, enjoy the tropical nature or just relax on the beach - Zanzibar offers a variety of options. Because the archipelago is a place where you can experience the beauty of nature and the cultural diversity of Africa in a unique combination.

On a tour through the spice plantations you can get to know the different spices such as cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and cardamom and enjoy their aromas. A trip to the Spice Island of Pemba is definitely an experience not to be missed. Pemba is known for its lush vegetation and cultivation of various spices. There you can take part in guided tours to learn more about growing spices, or you can find a quiet beach that is ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle and enjoying the unspoilt nature there.

You will also find typical spice markets in many places on Zanzibar, including in Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar. Walking through the narrow streets of Stone Town's old town is like stepping back in time and allows you to experience the rich history and culture of Zanzibar. At the same time you can admire the architecture and the many historical buildings.

In your free time you can experience the culture of Zanzibar up close, for example by participating in the typical music and dances. There are regular performances by traditional music and dance groups where you can immerse yourself in the immersive atmosphere.

Zanzibar also has an impressive variety to offer for nature lovers. There are various nature reserves on the islands where you can observe rare bird species, monkeys and the famous giant tortoises, but you can also experience the flora and fauna up close. A hike through Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, for example, is perfect for this.

The clear waters around the islands are ideal for diving and snorkeling to discover the colorful coral reefs and a variety of fish species. The archipelago is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts: you can not only dive and snorkel here, but also sail, kite surf and jet ski. The warm water temperatures and diverse marine life make Zanzibar one of the best diving spots in the world.

Another absolute highlight on Zanzibar are the famous sunsets. The beaches offer spectacular views of the horizon as the sun slowly sinks into the sea and paints the sky in a mesmerizing play of colours. After your volunteer work, enjoy the breathtaking sunsets with a picnic on the beach or in one of the many restaurants or beach bars with a refreshing drink.

On this occasion you can also try the typical and delicious dishes of Zanzibar, because the kitchen there is characterized by many different influences and thus produces a unique culinary art. Seafood, in particular, plays an important role in the local cuisine as it is caught fresh from the surrounding ocean.
