Volunteer in Auckland

What's the matter?

Since 2006, the non-profit organization has been involved in species protection at various locations in New Zealand. With the support of volunteers, they work to restore and sustainably protect New Zealand's natural habitats.

Because the organization has projects in different locations, volunteers often sign up for more than one project location to maximize the time of their stay. For example, you can start in Auckland and volunteer there for four weeks. You can then book additional weeks in Christchurch or Wellington. This allows you to see even more of New Zealand and its unique nature and you can get involved in species protection in a variety of ways.

At the project location in Auckland, the preservation of biodiversity is a very big and important issue. Most of the time you will be involved in out-of-town activities, helping to preserve and restore the environment. Projects you will work on include the following:

  • Ä€tiu Creek: North of Auckland, Ä€tiu Creek Regional Park is undergoing major restoration and planting efforts.
  • Papakura Stream: The river landscape to the south-east is to be preserved through special activities.

The aim of the project is to restore and conserve biodiversity in the park and river landscapes in and around Auckland.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Biodiversity is the motto of this project in Auckland. Together with the other volunteers you will work a lot outside of Auckland and will develop a deep connection to New Zealand's unique nature.

The following tasks await you in the species protection project at the Auckland site:

  • Planting trees
  • weed weed
  • control of pests
  • Beach clean-ups
  • Maintaining roads and trails
  • Measures to protect forests

Depending on the season and needs, the tasks can vary daily.

In this wildlife conservation project in Auckland you will normally work Monday to Friday from 8am to 16pm. However, depending on the activities and locations, your working hours may vary. You are usually free on weekends and public holidays and can use the time to explore your surroundings and do something together with the other volunteers.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House

In Auckland, depending on your assignment, you will either be accommodated in a former farmhouse in Atiu Creek Regional Park or in a country house in Titirangi in West Auckland. Both volunteer houses are equipped with bunk beds and have mattresses and pillows. However, you should take a sleeping bag with you for the night.
The accommodations have bathrooms with showers and washing machines that you can use for a small fee. There is also Wifi in the Volunteer House.

Food and drink will be provided during your stay. You get breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is always an option for vegetarians and vegans when it comes to meals. The volunteers usually prepare dinner together themselves and take care of keeping the kitchen and the household clean.

Auckland

New Zealand

Well May, Haere Mai! Welcome to New Zealand, the island at the "end of the world".
Located southeast of Australia in the South Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands separated by the Cook Strait. The two islands are also affectionately referred to by the locals as the “Godzone”, the land chosen by God. This is hardly surprising, because New Zealand is like a true paradise. Here nature has really made the most of what it has to offer: endless beaches and fjords, glaciers and crystal-clear lakes, rainforests and green valleys, volcanoes and explosive geysers.

Auckland

Harbor idyll meets big city flair - Auckland is not only the most populous city in New Zealand, but is also considered the most important port city and is nicknamed "City of Sails" due to the countless sailing boats.

People from all over the world meet in the metropolis, which has created a dynamic and exciting mix, especially in the areas of art, culture, food and music. Auckland's surroundings are just as diverse as its population. The city straddles two major bays and is nestled in a region of volcanic hills, black-sand beaches, cascading waterfalls and expansive rainforests. Off the coast of Auckland, in the Hauraki Gulf, are a variety of islands, including Rangitoto Island, Tiritiri Matangi and Waiheke, which are popular day trip destinations.

If you want to immerse yourself in a dynamic, multicultural metropolis and discover totally colorful landscapes, Auckland is the place for you!

Free time in Auckland

Your free time in Auckland

There is a lot to do in and around Auckland and you shouldn't miss it! After work or at the weekend you have enough time to explore your surroundings and get to know Auckland or New Zealand.

During the week you mostly work outside of Auckland, so you should definitely plan a trip to the big city at the weekend. Auckland is a paradise for shopaholics and foodies. From street markets to designer boutiques, cafes and restaurants to exciting nightlife - the city has a lot to offer.

A day trip to Rangitoto Island is particularly beautiful and recommended. The island, a dormant volcano, impresses with its unique biodiversity and is ideal for hiking and bird watching. Other hiking destinations include Maungawhau, the largest volcano in the Auckland region, or One Tree Hill, a volcano with a single tree on top.

If you're more drawn to the water, you can let off steam to your heart's content on the shores of the Hauraki Gulf. Whether it's a harbor tour by boat, watching whales and dolphins, diving, surfing or kayaking - you won't get bored here.

New Zealand's unique landscapes not only fascinate travelers, but have already cast a spell over several directors. The famous fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings” was filmed at various locations in New Zealand. About 1,5 hours away by car, near Matamata, is one of the spectacular filming locations: the hilly Shire. Follow in the footsteps of the hobbits and travel to Middle-earth!
