Social work

Although the situation of most Africans has improved significantly in recent decades, large parts of the population still face serious social problems. Poor educational opportunities, a lack of prospects and a lack of social security systems, combined with political instability and corruption, lead to poverty and violence in many places.

During your sabbatical in Africa, you have the opportunity to support organizations and projects that are tackling these problems and helping the people affected. In Cape Town, for example, you can use RGV to do the Refugee aid in South Africa support.

Teaching

With an average age of around 18 years, Africa is the continent with by far the youngest population on earth. No wonder the large number of children pushes many schools to (and beyond) their capacity. Overcrowded classes, school fees that are too high and a shortage of teachers often make it impossible to adequately support young people. This is a big problem, especially since education is a crucial factor in solving Africa's problems in the long run.

With RGV, you can use your sabbatical to get involved in education. For example at Teaching at a primary school in Cape Town.

Animals & Wildlife

Wide steppes, wild animals and untouched, pristine nature - many people should see such images in their mind's eye when they think of Africa. But it is precisely these paradisiacal landscapes that are currently more threatened than ever before. Climate change, soil erosion and deforestation endanger the natural landscapes of the continent just as much as poaching and illegal animal trade endanger the animals that live there.

If you want to help on site to protect gorillas, rhinos, lions and co., you can, for example, in our Big Five project in South Africa help along. If you want to work in close contact with wildlife and learn about the continent's creatures and nature, one could be ranger training be right for you.

RGV destination countries for your sabbatical in Africa

South Africa

South Africa is located in the extreme south of Africa, borders six African countries and has coastlines on the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Thanks to its diverse nature and the country's exciting multicultural society, South Africa has become one of Africa's most popular travel destinations. More than ten indigenous ethnic groups and eleven official languages give the state its nickname "rainbow nation".

The fact that South Africa is such an attractive travel destination is mainly due to the year-round good weather and the many sights. For example, during your sabbatical you have the opportunity to explore the country's spectacular landscapes and national parks and see wild animals such as elephants, rhinos or lions in the wild.

If you prefer something more urban, Cape Town - our main location in South Africa - is the right place for you. In the metropolis on the Atlantic you can marvel at the architecture, the coasts and the world-famous Table Mountain, among other things. But there is hardly any other place where you can experience the South African way of life and culture as authentically as in Cape Town.
