Volunteer in Australia

What's the matter?

The organization is an environmental consultancy focused on research and education aimed at improving coral reef resilience. The company was founded in 1992 and can therefore already look back on decades of experience.

The company's main mission is to improve understanding and knowledge of the Great Barrier Reef through research, training and consultancy. With its diverse expertise and experience, the team is perfectly suited to the challenges that arise every day. Through active conservation efforts, the organization works to ensure the reef has the best possible future.

Training programs for the next generation of marine biologists and conservationists are also offered here.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral ecosystem, stretching 2300 kilometers along Australia's east coast. It is the largest structure created by living things and is home to numerous species of coral, sponges, fish and other animals. Over 70 traditional groups have lived in balance with the Great Reef for more than 60.000 years and the organization is committed to continuing to treat it with respect. The first European to discover the Great Barrier Reef was the British navigator James Cook in 1770. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Coral reefs are complex ecosystems that can only thrive under certain conditions. Millions of years ago, certain ecological and geological conditions met that made it possible for this gigantic reef to develop in such a diverse and species-rich way.

However, it is severely threatened by climate change. Any change in environmental conditions can damage the ecosystem. Because corals grow and survive in a temperature range between 18 – 30°C. Rapidly changing, as well as extremely high or low temperatures put the ecosystem under pressure.

Coral bleaching has been observed in coral reefs since the 1870s. Today it is understood as a natural stress response to stress or changing environmental conditions that helps corals survive these events. However, as climate change brings faster changes, this has led to unnatural events such as mass bleaching in most coral reefs worldwide. Mass bleaching is thus a direct consequence of human-caused climate change. Climate change also creates cyclones that trigger destructive waves.

As a volunteer in an ecological project, you will contribute to the monitoring and care of the Great Barrier Reef and thus contribute to the preservation of corals. In addition, you will learn a lot about marine biology, acquire valuable skills for your future working life, make new contacts and gain unique experiences.

Your tasks as a volunteer

The tasks depend heavily on which areas the organization is primarily concentrating on at the time of your assignment. Basically, your tasks can look like this:

  • Data acquisition on the reef
  • Data Entry and Analysis
  • organization of resources
  • Social media support
  • development of educational resources
  • Visiting a turtle rehabilitation center and caring for sick and injured turtles once a week
  • Help with household chores

Since the teams are relatively small, it is important that everyone is involved in as many aspects as possible and supports them. In this way, you will also get to know all areas and gain a wide range of experiences. Depending on their competence, however, volunteers can also focus more on a specific area.

You will work Monday to Friday either in the office or on the reef. Office hours are 9:00am to 16:00pm and Reef hours are 07:30am to 17:00pm. You have the weekends free and can explore the area independently. In principle, work is also carried out on public holidays.

The activities vary daily and it is therefore difficult to map an exact daily routine. Basically, however, a working day can be imagined as follows:

reef tag: On reef days your working day starts at 7:30 am. Here you collect data in the sea and help to create content for social media or to implement or develop measures for the preservation of the reef.
Office tag: The office activities vary constantly, because these depend on which projects the focus is on. Basically, however, you will process the data collected on the reef days here. This means that you enter the collected data in a system and evaluate it.

Accommodation Catering

Your hostel in Australia

Your accommodation is a hostel with a total of 59 rooms. There are single rooms as well as communal rooms, whereby the latter are always divided into groups of 6 or 10. The premises are equipped with a TV and fast Wi-Fi. In addition to a gaming room, a pool, a parking lot and a small travel agency, the property also has disabled access. Possible day trips and activities can be booked directly at the reception.

The accommodation is only a few minutes' walk from the office and the reef with the associated marina can also be reached in about 15 minutes.

The hostel is right in the center of the city and there is a shopping center just across the road. There are different shops and supermarkets where you can buy clothes as well as food and drinks.

Note for food: Lunch is included on reef days (One lunch the first week and two lunches each subsequent week)

Location

North Queensland

The project site is considered the “Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef”. When you work in northern Queensland, you have the famous reef right on your doorstep. The tropical rainforest is also in the immediate vicinity.

The city is popular with travelers and has a very lively atmosphere with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. There is always something going on! In the northeast of Australia you can expect beaches like in paradise, but also forests, mountains and gorges. You can see different species of animals both in the water and on land.

In addition to the rainy season - around December to March - the region is mostly sunny and dry, with water temperatures averaging between 23°C and 30°C.

So here you have a perfect combination of city life, beach and nature!

Your free time in North Queensland

After work and at the weekend, you are of course free to explore your surroundings. On one side the rainforest, on the other the Great Barrier Reef and lots of other activities in between - it couldn't be better.

The Great Barrier Reef is really not a place where you get tired of looking or should get tired of it. After all, this is not only an ecosystem of immeasurable biodiversity, but with a length of 2300 km it is even the largest structure on earth created by living beings!

Go on a tour of discovery with other volunteers in areas of the reef that are still unknown to you to look for rare sea creatures such as sharks, sea turtles or even manatees and take the time you need to let the natural wonder of the world work its magic on you in all its splendor and diversity.

Should you ever get tired of diving and snorkeling, there is always a whole range of other activities available to fill your free time. Relax on the beach, learn to surf or just spend a day in town. The city of the deployment site is a popular travel destination and has a lot to offer itself. Get acquainted with Aboriginal history and art with a visit to museums or hit the buzzing nightlife to party with backpackers from all over the world.

North of the deployment site, there are also many national parks with the opportunity to get to know Australia's tropical rainforest. A particularly recommended classic day trip is a visit to the small town of Kuranda. Here you have the opportunity, among other things, to float for miles above the canopy of the rainforest in a cable car before you start your way back through the jungle landscape on an antique railway line.

On-site procedure

Arrive in Cairns

You land at Cairns Airport, where one of our team members will pick you up and drive you to your accommodation. If this is not possible, you can take a taxi or an Uber to the accommodation yourself. The costs for this will be covered. In about 20 minutes you have arrived at the project site. Here you have the opportunity to get to know the other volunteers and to recover from your trip.

Orientation program in North Queensland

The orientation program starts on Monday morning at 9 a.m. and ends on Thursday - depending on the group, the orientation program can last until Friday. At the beginning of the program, there is a general welcome for the volunteers and you get to know your contact person for the duration of your stay. The orientation program takes place both in the offices and on the reef. You will be informed about all important things in and around the project and trained for your assignment. There is also a reef tour, a general reef information day and a trip to the turtle rehabilitation center.

Your first day in the project

Your workdays will vary based on reef and office days. On the first day, together with the employees, you will get an initial insight into the comprehensive work of the organization and you will be able to gain initial experience in various subject areas.
