Volunteer in Wellington

What's the matter?

The non-profit organization is committed to nature conservation at various locations in New Zealand in order to restore and preserve natural habitats. With the help of the active support of volunteers, the organization has been involved in this area since 2006.

Since the organization offers projects at different locations, volunteers usually combine several projects during their stay. For example, you can take part in the project in Wellington for four weeks and then move to another location (Auckland or Christchurch) for another two weeks. This gives you more variety and the opportunity to discover even more of New Zealand.

New Zealand is known for its unique flora and fauna. To ensure that this is preserved in the future, the organization is committed to protecting it and reforesting the reserves, streams and beaches. At the project site in Wellington in particular, the organization focuses on the following areas:

  • Forest in the heart of the city: Wellington's cityscape is to become greener so that native bird species feel comfortable and settle there.
  • Restoration of the dunes: Outside the city, the organization takes care of the preservation and protection of the dune landscapes.

The aim of the project is to create green spaces and a sanctuary for native birds in Wellington, as well as to protect and restore the south coast's dune and beach landscape.

Your tasks as a volunteer

This project is all about nature. You will work a lot outdoors and not only get to know the fascinating environment in New Zealand, but also actively participate in the protection of it.

The following tasks await you in the conservation project at the Wellington site:

  • Gardening support
  • Planting trees
  • weed weed
  • control of pests
  • Beach clean-ups
  • Maintaining roads and trails

Depending on the season and needs, the tasks can vary daily.

As a rule, you work Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 16 p.m. However, your working hours may vary depending on the activities and locations. On weekends and public holidays you are usually free and can use your time to go on excursions with the other volunteers and explore the surrounding area. Participation in our volunteer program supports a global commitment to nature conservation projects.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House

During your time as a volunteer in Wellington, you will be housed in a volunteer house with other participants. You sleep in a shared room and share a bathroom. Mattress, pillow and sheets are provided per bed. However, you need to bring a sleeping bag as there are no blankets in the volunteer house.

There is also wifi in the accommodation. However, there is no guarantee that the connection will be stable at all times.

If you want to wash your clothes, you can use the washing machine and dryer available in the Volunteer House for a small fee.

Food and drink will be provided during your stay. You get breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is always an option for vegetarians and vegans when it comes to meals. The volunteers usually prepare dinner together themselves and take care of keeping the kitchen and the household clean. For a change you can also use the grill outside the accommodation.

There is also a table tennis table in the accommodation where you can play with the other volunteers.

Wellington in New Zealand

Wellington

New Zealand

Well May, Haere Mai! Welcome to New Zealand, the island at the "end of the world".
Located in the South Pacific, southeast of Australia, New Zealand consists of two main islands separated by the Cook Strait. The two islands are also affectionately referred to by the locals as the “Godzone” – the land chosen by God. This is hardly surprising, because New Zealand is like a true paradise. Here nature has really made the most of what it has to offer: endless beaches and fjords, glaciers and crystal-clear lakes, rainforests and green valleys, volcanoes and explosive geysers.

Wellington

New Zealand's capital, Wellington, is located on the southern tip of the North Island. Due to its immediate location on the coast between the two main islands, it is often windy there, which gives the city the nickname "Windy City".

Embedded between green hills and the idyllic harbor, Wellington forms a pleasant symbiosis between city and nature. You can convince yourself of this when you climb the almost 200 meter high Mount Victoria. The mountain offers a commanding view of the capital, and at the top is a Maori statue instead of a summit cross.

Wellington is particularly well-known and popular for its culinary delights: restaurants, bars and cafés as far as the eye can see. In fact, Wellington is said to have more bars and restaurants per capita than New York.

The location is particularly suitable for you if you want to experience big city flair combined with natural surroundings and want to discover New Zealand's capital.

Free time in Wellington

Your free time in Wellington

For the leisure fanatic, Wellington has a whole range to offer. Whether inside or outside the city - there is something for everyone and you will be able to fill your free time with variety.

During the week, the end of the day is perfect for relaxing with the other volunteers, cooking or playing a round of table tennis in the Volunteer House. If you feel like it, you can of course also go out and convince yourself of the numerous bars, restaurants and cafés.

The best way to get an overview of Wellington is from Mount Victoria. You can get to the summit either on foot or by bus. The view over the entire city and the open sea will inspire you.

History buffs won't be disappointed in Wellington either. The National Museum "Te Papa" immerses you in the fascinating culture of the Maori and takes you on a journey through the legend of Maui. You will find “Te Papa” right on the waterfront in Wellington.

You should plan a little more time for excursions outside of the city. The advantage of Wellington: Nature is right on your doorstep. For example, spend a relaxing day at one of Wellington's most beautiful beaches, Houghton Bay. You can be there by car within a few minutes. You can also take the ferry from Wellington to Matiu/Somes Island and discover the beautiful island. Also worth seeing is the nature reserve Zealandia. Among other things, New Zealand's most famous bird lives in this valley: the kiwi.

And one last tip: events and live shows take place almost every day in Wellington. Round off your stay in New Zealand with an unforgettable concert visit!
