Volunteer in Christchurch

What's the matter?

Since 2006, a non-profit organization in New Zealand has been committed to restoring the country's natural habitats and preserving them in the long term.
The organization receives regular support from motivated volunteers, who take on various activities to protect the environment.

The organization runs projects with different focuses at several locations in New Zealand, for example in Auckland and Wellington. It is therefore possible and common for volunteers to change their project location during their stay in New Zealand. For example, you can first take part in Christchurch for four weeks and then book another two weeks in Auckland or Wellington. This allows you to get involved in several environmental protection projects and get to know even more about your environment in New Zealand.

At the project site in Christchurch, everything revolves around the elixir of life: water. With tasks such as clean ups, creeks and beaches should be kept clean. The focus is on the following two projects:

  • Dallington Landing: A major reclamation project is set to restore this area of the Avon River Corridor that was devastated by the 2011 earthquake.
  • Lyttleton Harbour: Several restoration projects are taking place in the beautiful harbor to protect and preserve it.

The aim of the project is to restore important wetlands in Christchurch, thereby better protecting the river courses in the region and creating a habitat for many native birds.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Water plays an important role in this project. That is why you will be deployed in activities that contribute to the preservation and protection of wetlands. Always in the fresh air, you will get to know a lot about New Zealand's environment on this project.

The following tasks await you in the environmental protection project at the Christchurch location:

  • maintenance of habitat
  • Beach clean-ups
  • weed weed
  • Planting trees
  • control of pests
  • Maintaining roads and trails

Depending on the season and needs, the tasks can vary daily.

Your working hours are usually Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 16 p.m. Depending on the activity and location, these times may vary. You have free time on weekends and you don't have to work on public holidays. On these days you can spend time with the other volunteers and plan excursions. Participation in our volunteer program supports a global commitment to nature conservation projects.

Christchurch

New Zealand

Well May, Haere Mai! Welcome to New Zealand, the island at the "end of the world".
Located southeast of Australia in the South Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands separated by the Cook Strait. The two islands are also affectionately referred to by the locals as the “Godzone”, the land chosen by God. This is hardly surprising, because New Zealand is like a true paradise. Here nature has really made the most of what it has to offer: endless beaches and fjords, glaciers and crystal-clear lakes, rainforests and green valleys, volcanoes and explosive geysers.

Christchurch

Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island and exudes English flair. The city center surprises with a mix of English elegance and modern chic.

Although Christchurch was hit by earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, nothing shakes the city. Since then, reconstruction measures have been going on diligently to bring the city back to its old but innovative glory. Artists have also taken the natural phenomenon as an opportunity and immortalized themselves in the destroyed buildings: This is how an impressive and lively art scene has emerged in Christchurch.

But Christchurch is also a paradise for nature lovers. Due to its direct location on the east coast, the city is partially surrounded by the Pacific and thus offers a fantastic view of the open sea. Christchurch is also lined with a variety of parks for strolling and relaxing. The heart of the city is definitely the botanical gardens.

The location is particularly suitable for you if you are interested in the life and landscapes of the South Island of New Zealand. Christchurch is particularly worthwhile for art enthusiasts, but nature lovers will also find their balance to city life here.

Free time in Christchurch

Your free time in Christchurch

Your stay in Christchurch will be rounded off by impressions that you can collect in your free time. You have time for this mainly on the weekends, but also during the week after work.

After a hard day's work, you can spend your evening together playing a few games in the Volunteer House or make yourself comfortable with a book from the in-house library.

Directly in front of your accommodation you have the opportunity to use one of the many beautiful paths in Halswell Quarry Park for walking, hiking or cycling. Or you get on the historic tram and explore the city center with it. You will pass the Canterbury Museum, the particularly beautiful New Regent Street and the Botanic Gardens with their abundance of plants, flowers and sculptures. By the way, you can not only explore the botanical gardens on foot, but also take a relaxing punt on the Avon River. A trip to Riccarton Bush Park is worthwhile on Saturdays. There is a farmer's market where you can buy fresh groceries or just stroll around.

If you want to go a little further, you can drive to Port Hills within XNUMX minutes. Once there, a sensational view over Christchurch, the Southern Alps and the Castle Rock rock formation awaits you. The region around Christchurch is also suitable for swimming. The extensive beaches of Sumner Beach, for example, are particularly beautiful.

You can also ask the local team for tips at any time. They will be happy to help you and can certainly recommend even more things to see.
