Why you should consider volunteering in Indonesia

Despite economic growth, the largest economy in Southeast Asia is struggling with poverty, youth unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, child labour, corruption, environmental problems, etc. Although tourism on the holiday islands has been booming in recent years, not everyone has benefited from this development: more than ten percent of the residents live below the poverty line. Around 15 percent of young people are unemployed. As a result, the gap between rich and poor is widening.

This is where our various projects in Indonesia come in, whose teams work on site for education and for the Use nature and animal protection. Do your part to improve the situation on the islands by volunteering and become part of the RGV community in Indonesia!

Volunteering in Indonesia

Volunteer work on the Indonesian island of Bali

Bali is arguably the most famous island in Indonesia and has become increasingly popular in recent years. It offers you a unique combination of different landscapes, cultural diversity, varied cuisine and hippie culture.

In the midst of this diverse environment, we offer you interesting volunteer projects:

"Think globally - act locally!" – That is the motto of the school in Balithat you can support with your volunteer work. For example, if you want to find out what it's like to be on the other side of the classroom after you leave school, you can teach English at a school here in Bali. In this way you make a significant contribution to imparting knowledge and skills to the children, with which they can cope with the demands of globalization.

In addition to this social project, you can also get involved in nature and animal protection in Bali. For example, get involved in one permaculture garden, where the mentality of taking only what is necessary and giving back more than you took reigns supreme. If you like to help out in the garden and want to learn a lot about sustainability and organic farming, then this project is the right place for you!

In addition, we offer you a trip to Bali Project in a wildlife sanctuary where you can get involved with the diverse wildlife of the island: Here you can experience bears, monkeys and cockatoos and many other wild animals up close and support the team in caring for them so that they can then be released back into the wild.

It doesn't matter which project you get involved in - with your volunteer work you make a small contribution to preserving the diverse flora and fauna of Bali and to improving the living conditions of the children.

Your free time in Bali

Before or after your volunteer work or at the weekends, you have endless opportunities to explore the dream island of Bali. Relax on one of the many beautiful, palm-fringed beaches, relax with yoga in breathtaking nature, go for long walks on the beach, throw yourself into the waves with your surfboard or discover the fantastic underwater world while snorkeling or diving! Black sand beaches, coral reefs and dolphins await you in Lovina, on the north coast of Bali.

Bali is also unique in terms of culture. You will find temples everywhere and there are temple or other festivals almost every day. Although Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, it is mainly Hindus who live in Bali, and their faith pervades the everyday life of the Balinese people. Experience the cultural characteristics of Bali from a very authentic perspective during your stay and gain numerous intercultural experiences.

Incidentally, Bali is also the right island for mountain lovers. Embark on wonderful hikes in the highlands - always with a view of the green volcanic peaks! Bali is also not stingy with steel-blue mountain lakes. Or hike through the green, terraced rice fields that make for a great photo opportunity!

But the islands around Bali also lure with nature and adventure: Enjoy island paradises such as the Gili Islands or Nusa Lembong, where you can surf or snorkel and dive in crystal-clear water. Explore the island of Java, known for its great volcanic landscape and remarkable culture, visit the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world in Yogyakarta or see the famous Prambanan complex with the Lara Jonggrang temple, which serves to worship the Hindu god Shiva. Volunteering on the islands of Borneo and Nusa Penida

Indonesia is so much more than just Bali: Experience the country's pristine nature and embark on your volunteering adventure in Borneo or Nusa Penida!

In Borneo you can register in our conservation project for the environment and animals of the island. As the forests there are cleared for palm oil, timber and mining, orangutans are losing more and more of their natural habitat and are therefore at risk of extinction. With the support of volunteers, the organization is trying to tackle this problem and restore the natural habitat of the primate species.

During your free time, you can explore the flora and fauna of the island's dense rainforests and enjoy the beautiful, pristine coastlines.

Have you ever heard of “Blue Paradise”? That's the name of the Indonesian island of Nusa Penida, which lies south-east of Bali with its breathtaking beaches and clear turquoise waters. The paradise island definitely lives up to this name and is particularly popular with diving tourists. But not only in the water, but also in the air in the “Blue Paradise” there is a lot going on: because here you can relax volunteer at a bird sanctuary. Stand up for the protection of the bali star and learn an incredible amount about this special bird species and nature conservation.

It doesn't matter whether you volunteer in Bali, Borneo or Nusa Penida - you will certainly never forget your stay in Indonesia and gain valuable experiences that you will personally benefit from immensely.
