Teaching in Bali

What's the matter?

The organization is a school that offers free English classes to the children in the village. In addition, the school also offers other programs for the students. These include courses on the topics of agriculture, programming and digital development, as well as so-called "Local Wisdom" lessons. It is taught according to the motto "Think globally, act locally". The school wants the children to have a knowledge and understanding of the Equip globalization without forgetting their own native culture.150 children aged 8 to 18 are currently enrolled in the school. There are 16 lessons per week, with a class of up to XNUMX children. The Classrooms are made of bamboo, and unlike what you may know from your school days, teachers and students sit on the floor during class.

With more and more tourists flocking to Bali every year, there is a growing demand for locals who speak good English. It is all the more important for the children to learn English at a higher level and, above all, to use their language skills. After all, those who speak the language well will have better chances on the job market in the future. However, teachers in rural schools often teach English without the necessary qualifications. Therefore, this school in the southeast of Bali offers free English classes for children who want to improve their language skills and is happy about the support of motivated volunteers.

Mastery of the English language is often a condition or selection criterion for a job. No wonder, after all, the world economy is becoming increasingly globalized and English plays an important role in this. The aim of the project is for the students to improve their English skills and be equipped with knowledge and skills that will help them to face the labor market and globalization. You will help to give children an awareness and understanding of the opportunities available to them.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your main task while volunteering at the school in Bali is to improve the quality of English teaching through your active support in the classroom. The children should get better at speaking English in particular. Therefore, there are many exercises for applying the language skills. You will also be responsible for helping students develop their skills and change their mindsets, perspectives and behaviors.

In addition to teaching in the classroom, you will also prepare some games for the children to play in or outside of class. Due to this balance, the concentration in the classroom is also much higher. You also build a closer relationship with your students by playing games together.

On Sunday, various creative courses for the students take place in rotation. So if you would like to take part in a Balinese cooking or dance course or yoga class, you are cordially invited. If you are interested in gardening, you are welcome to help out in the school garden or with the beach clean-up. So you have a wide range of opportunities to get involved alongside your English lessons!

You normally work Monday to Thursday, six hours a day.

The working day begins with breakfast together with the other volunteers. After that, you start preparing the syllabus and topics for the lessons. There are three lessons per day. The first starts in the morning at 9am, the afternoon classes are at 15pm and 17pm. You will teach 1,5 hours at a time, either alone or in pairs. That depends on how many other volunteers are in the center at the moment. You are usually free from Friday to Sunday and can explore the area independently.

Rice field in Bali

Southeast Bali

Our project location is in the southeast of Bali. The southern part of the Indonesian island is particularly lively and therefore very popular. The region is also best known for its world-class waves.

But Bali isn't just a paradise for surfers. The island has been a hotspot of digital bohemia for years and attracts countless backpackers, digital nomads, yoga travelers and package holidaymakers every year. So here you meet people from all over the world! In the immediate vicinity of your accommodation you will also find numerous beaches and beautiful landscapes. Especially the typical rice terraces and palm forests will inspire you! Also popular cities like Ubud, Denpansar or Canggu are not far away.

Do you like to enjoy the tranquility of nature or the exciting hustle and bustle of different cities? Do you like surfing or do yoga? Would you like to meet new people or local traditions? Or just relax on the beach? It doesn't matter: Bali is definitely worth a visit!

Free time in Southeast Bali

Your free time in Southeast Bali

For many travelers, Bali is heaven on earth. You have an unbelievable number of opportunities to spend your free time here. You can find markets or beach clubs near your accommodation to explore after work.

In about 15 minutes you are already on the beach, where you can relax or learn to surf. Or you can end the day comfortably with the other volunteers on your terrace.

On the weekends there are interesting activities that you can take part in, such as Balinese cooking and dance classes or yoga classes. Otherwise you can discover the nearby cities together or plan trips to sights. For example, visit the largest city on the island, Denpansar, with many museums and temples. However, you will find Hindu temples all over the island that are well worth seeing, for example Pura Tanah Lot or Pura Luhur.

The on-site team will be happy to help you with the planning. If you have an international driver's license, the best way to get around is to rent a motorbike or scooter, otherwise there are taxis. In addition, the team offers the possibility to go with a driver to a local market nearby once a week and to Ubud twice a week free of charge. Further trips are subject to a fee for the volunteer.

On-site procedure

Arrival in Bali

You will land at Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, where you will be picked up by a team member and driven to your accommodation. Depending on the traffic situation, you will be at your project location in about an hour. There you will first be greeted by the team before you go to your accommodation, where you have the opportunity to meet the other volunteers and recover from your trip.

Orientation program in Bali

The orientation program usually starts one day after arrival. First, a team member will give you a mini tour of the school grounds and information about the program and how it works. You will also learn a lot about the area around the accommodation. If you have any questions, you can ask them right here.

Your first day in the project

On the first day, the volunteers have a so-called observation day. You will be assigned to an experienced volunteer who will support you in the school class, explain the tasks to you and familiarize you with them. If there are currently no other volunteers on site, permanent employees will support you. First you will observe and learn how others prepare and conduct the lessons. After the first day you will start teaching yourself, of course initially with the support of your partners. Gung Dwi, your team leader, is also on site if you have any questions or need help!
