Have you heard of “Blue Paradise”? Not yet? The Indonesian island of Nusa Penida is known as the blue paradise. It is located southeast of Bali and impresses with its beautiful beaches and clear turquoise water. But the island also has a lot to offer in the air: the Balistar. Unfortunately, the rare bird is now threatened with extinction. That's why an organization on Nusa Penida is making sure that the population of the beautiful birds is increasing again and you can support them!

Bird Conservation Project on Nusa Penida

What is it about?

For the project site on Nusa Penida, the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) is looking for volunteers to help protect the bali starlets. After the Bali starling population plummeted in the 2010s, FNPF is working to reintroduce the rare birds and put up nest boxes to encourage breeding.

For long-term success, the bird population is monitored, the nest boxes are regularly maintained and more are added. The educational work among the residents also plays an important role in increasing their awareness of the Balistare.

The aim of the project is to conserve the wild Bali starling population on Nusa Penida and to increase the number of birds by installing nesting boxes.

Your tasks as a volunteer

The following tasks await you in the bird protection project in Indonesia:

  • Daily monitoring of nest boxes
  • 2x per week behavioral observation of bali stars
  • Build and clean nest boxes
  • Waterhole Experiment Assist (View Camera Trap Photos)
  • Beach clean-ups
  • Prepare teaching materials and hold English courses for children
  • Help in the tree nursery (sow seeds, fill polybags, plant trees)

You typically work from Sunday to Thursday. Your working day usually starts at 7 a.m. and your daily working time is around 6 hours. On Fridays you are free and can discover the island. On your days off you can take part in various activities such as exploring the island, bird watching, reading camera traps, English courses etc.

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation on Nusa Penida

During your stay you will live in an accommodation with shared rooms. These are fitted with western style bathrooms. There is no warm water, but that is not needed given the high temperatures. The rooms also have a fan and WiFi.

Outside the accommodation there is a communal kitchen with a stove and fridge where you can cook together with the other volunteers.

If you want to go shopping, you will find small shops and food stalls along the main street. You can reach it on foot in about 15 minutes and by car in about 10 minutes. Or you can visit the food market, which is about 20 minutes away by car.

Location

Nusa penida

Nusa Penida, also called the blue paradise, is an island southeast of Bali and can be reached by speedboat from Bali's ports of Sanur, Serangan or Padang Bai. The island is about 20 km long and 12 km wide and only sparsely populated. The two main towns of Toyapakeh and Sampalan are located in the north of the island.

Nusa Penida impresses above all with its nature. The cliffs and cliffs, the endless white sandy beaches and the crystal clear, deep blue water leave no doubt that Nusa Penida is undeniably a true paradise. No wonder that the island is very popular with diving tourists.

But not only the underwater world of Nusa Penida convinces, there is also a lot going on in the air. There is a bird sanctuary on the island, which focuses, among other things, on the protection of bali stars. The rare bird was originally discovered in Bali and introduced to Nusa Penida as part of a reintroduction program.

Free time on Nusa Penida

Free time on Nusa Penida

Explore the diverse nature of the island

In your free time you can experience a lot on Nusa Penida. For example, after your day at work you can visit the small shops and food stalls that are located on the main street. It takes about 15 minutes to walk there. A visit to the food market is also recommended and is only around 20 minutes away by car. There you will find delicious, local dishes and fresh groceries at reasonable prices.

There is also an imported goods store and gym where you can work out just 15 minutes away by car. If you want to eat out or visit a café, you will find what you are looking for on the main street about 10-20 minutes from the complex. They even have Western cuisine if you ever miss the food at home.

On your days off, if you have a little more time, a trip to the beautiful beaches of Nusa Penida is worthwhile. The closest beach can be reached within 10 minutes by car. Other popular destinations such as Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay, Broken Beach etc. are approximately 30-45 minutes drive from the resort.

If you would like to take part in a sightseeing tour, this is also possible on request. Just approach our local RGV team and they will be happy to help you.

During the day it is not a problem to explore the area alone. For safety reasons, however, you should not do this at night. In general it is also better to explore the island by car or scooter together with the other volunteers. There is only limited public transport.

RGV FAQ
to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for Indonesia?

German nationals can apply for a tourist visa upon arrival, for a fee of around €30 (IDR 500.000). In addition to a passport, you need a return or onward flight ticket to another country. The visa is valid for a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended by a further 30 days on site.

For longer stays you can use the B211A visa visa-indonesia.com apply for. This costs €270 on the website. You will receive the letter of invitation for the visa and other information from us.

What language skills do I need for the project?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have good English skills.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

What are the requirements for the animal welfare project?

There are no special requirements for participation. What is important is having fun working with animals and being interested in animal welfare. Good physical fitness is often an advantage.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.
