Volunteer project in nature conservation on Borneo

  • In the middle of nature
  • animals in the wild
  • Many volunteers on site

As Borneo's forests are cleared for palm oil, timber and mining, orangutans are increasingly losing their natural habitat. This is particularly problematic because the primate species plays an important role in the forest ecosystem. Help with this nature conservation project and help protect the endangered species and restore their habitat.

Volunteers in Borneo

What's the matter?

The non-profit organization Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) has been active in Tanjung Puting National Park on Borneo since 1997. So far, the organization has had good success in rehabilitating and releasing orangutans. However, the problem remains that the rainforest is cut down and cleared for the cultivation of oil palms. With the support of volunteers, the organization is trying to tackle this problem and, with this nature conservation project, is trying to restore the natural habitat of the orangutans.

The cultivation of oil palms is becoming more and more of a serious problem. The plant has its origins in West Africa. However, because it only grows in tropical climates, it was brought to Indonesia for the first time in 1848 and has been cultivated there on a large scale ever since. For the excessive cultivation, more and more rainforest area has to be cut down and cleared, resulting in serious forest fires every year. This not only destroys the habitat of the endangered orangutans and many other animal species. The ecosystem in the forest is also thrown out of balance and has devastating effects on climate change.

The goal of the project is to restore the natural habitat for native wildlife, particularly orangutans, and to prevent forest fires.

Your tasks as a volunteer

This project in Borneo is all about conservation. You will support the organization with a variety of tasks and spend most of your time outside in the fresh air.

The following tasks await you during your assignment in Kalimantan:

  • Planting trees
  • Water
  • Look for seedlings
  • weeding and mulching
  • soil preparation
  • Maintenance of the garden and the paths
  • Agriculture
  • composting
  • Support for construction projects
  • collect food
  • production of signs
  • give language lessons

Depending on the season and needs, the tasks can vary daily. During the rainy season, the focus is more on activities such as teaching, making necklaces from Bruta roots, carving and processing coconuts into oil.

Your working hours are usually spread over Monday to Saturday. A working day is usually six to eight hours long and could look like this:

8 - 9 am: Look for seedlings
9 - 10 a.m.: Clean up the nursery
10 a.m. - 11 a.m.: Fill the polybag with soil
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Plant seedlings in the nursery
12pm - 14pm: Lunch break
14pm - 16pm: composting
16 p.m. - 17 p.m.: Giving language lessons

The procedure is just one possible example and can vary daily.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House

Together with the other participants you will be accommodated in a volunteer house. There you share a shared room and also use the kitchen and bathroom together. The bathrooms are equipped with western-style toilets. Note that there is no hot water in the showers.

You can charge your mobile phone or other electronic devices in the accommodation with solar power. Internet is also available but limited.

Meals are provided for the entire duration of your stay. You get breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In the vicinity is the forest fire and palm oil area. You need about five minutes to walk there. You can get to the river within 15 minutes. The nearest shop is about 45 minutes away by motorbike and you can get to the town of Pangkalan Bun in two hours by Klotok.

Although the area around your shelter is safe, it is better to be accompanied by one of the team members when going out at night, as wildlife may be close to your shelter.

Location

Kalimantan on Borneo

Kalimantan, Borneo

Borneo is the third largest island in the world after Greenland and New Guinea and is located in the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia. The special thing about the island: It is divided between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. In Indonesia, the entire island is called Kalimantan. In a narrower sense, however, Kalimantan only refers to the Indonesian part of the island. Our project site is also located there.

From rainforest to mangrove swamps to mountain landscapes - Borneo is incredibly varied and diverse. In the natural paradise, an extraordinarily large variety of species has developed, with animal and plant species that sometimes only occur on the island, i.e. are endemic. Around 220 species of mammals, including the orangutan (which is otherwise only found in northern Sumatra) and the proboscis monkey, which is only found on Borneo, over 600 species of birds and countless reptiles, amphibians and insects call the island home.

Bali is a very popular travel destination for tourists, but Indonesia has much more to offer. If you want to get to know a fascinating animal and plant world, like to go on discovery tours and like to be in nature, you should definitely pay a visit to Kalimantan - preferably as a volunteer!

Free time in Kalimantan on Borneo

Your free time in Kalimantan, Borneo

After your work, you will definitely want to get to know the surroundings in Kalimantan better and be enchanted by the natural paradise.

Your project location is in the middle of the wilderness: grab the other volunteers, go out into nature and let the Tanjung Puting National Park have an effect on you. In Kalimantan there are numerous plants and trees to discover and you can observe beautiful birds that can only be found in Borneo.

An absolute highlight that you should not miss is a ride on the Klotok. Are you wondering what that is? A Klotok is a houseboat that takes you across the river deep into the jungle. What's practical about it: you can be on the road for several days because everything you need is on board. During the day you can fully enjoy the view from the boat. With a bit of luck, you will discover wild orangutans swinging from branch to branch. You can also observe proboscis monkeys, macaques and numerous bird species. If you spend several days with the Klotok and spend the night on it, you will be overwhelmed by the sounds of the jungle and the sight of the starry sky!
