What is it about?

The RGV Street Children Project was launched by Rainbow Garden Village and our local NGO, the “Youth a New Foundation”. There are many families living below the poverty line in Greater Accra. The children growing up there often have little to say to them during the day and are left to their own devices. They have little or no support from home and often have to fend for themselves. Attending school is often not possible in this context.

Our street children project mostly takes place outdoors, in the garden of our host mother Mama Mina. Your garden functions as a playground, a place to sleep for the little ones and a learning area for the slightly older children. Toys, tables for learning and lunch, and sanitary facilities are available. In the event of rain or strong sun, the program is moved to the covered Summer Hut, under whose open canopy there is enough space in the shade. Since spring 2016, children can also let off steam in a small playground with play equipment.

With your commitment you support children from difficult family circumstances. Our permanent supervisor, you and other volunteers give the children support and security. The children in the project are usually between six months and twelve years old.

The goal of the project is to help these children and thus create conditions that open up better future opportunities for our protégés. We want to offer the children solid structures and in this way pave the way to regular school attendance. Children should be given the opportunity to be part of society!

Your tasks as a volunteer

The Focus of your tasks lies in the care, support and support of children. Many of them simply lack attention. For example, you support the carer with hygiene education, practice English with the children in a playful way, play with them, help prepare food and feed the little ones. You help ensure that the small children have rest periods and at the same time train the social skills of the older children. You master tasks like setting the table and other everyday challenges together.

For the little ones, the focus is on care and supervision; for the older children, the focus is on imparting knowledge, helping with school work, playing and being creative. The children are divided into age groups. You will take turns with other volunteers in providing support and organizational tasks.

Although the children are sometimes on site very early, Your work doesn't start until after breakfast, around 8 a.m. Work takes place Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to around 13 p.m.

The tasks described here can also include: Other activities to be added. Lunch is usually cooked for the children and then eaten together. Project support usually ends in the early afternoon.

You are free to organize additional activities for the children! For example, game afternoons, English lessons on Fridays or whatever else you can think of. There are hardly any limits to your creativity, and the children are happy about your attention. Please also take a look at our pedagogical concept for the RGV street children project.

Important note: In some schools in Ghana, education with the cane is a common educational method. This type of punishment has disappeared from classrooms in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for decades.

Of course, as a volunteer you work without a stick. However, we want you to know about the cane, not be shocked, and handle the situation responsibly. Our on-site team management and program coordination in Munich are a good place to go if you want to talk about the topic or need support.

At home with host mom Mama Mina

You can feel at home with our host mother, Mama Mina, who has been with RGV since it was founded in 1999. Mama Mina set up the location in Ghana together with RGV founder Steffen Mayer. For years she has been taking in volunteers and interns and taking care of their well-being. For example, you will be able to enjoy their cooking skills.

There's always something going on at Mama Mina's. This is primarily due to the fact that their site is a contact point for all street children. In addition, up to five other volunteers or interns can be accommodated with you in the house. There are several bedrooms and a bathroom. In the living room you can relax and chat with Mama Mina and her family. A large garden also belongs to the house. There is usually eaten together.

Enjoy the time with your host mother Mama Mina and go on tour through the metropolis of Accra together with other volunteers and interns in your free time! Let Mina give you tips on visiting the most beautiful corners worth seeing!

Volunteer House in Accra

Since 2024, volunteers have been accommodated in the new Volunteer House in a great, central location in Accra. There's always a lot going on here: you live in the house with other volunteers and interns. There are four bedrooms available to you, each room offering space for four to eight volunteers. Three bathrooms with showers and toilets, two balconies and a large garden can be used. There is also a washing machine and the house is air conditioned with ceiling fans. Our cook will take care of your physical well-being both in the morning and in the evening.

The garden invites you to relax. There you can listen to music, read and exchange ideas. Or organize a game evening – there is a large selection of board games! Ama always organizes small social events for the residents.

All of Accra has a very well developed mobile network with 3G data transfer for e-mail or Skype. Accommodation and meals (breakfast and dinner) are included in our services both in the volunteer house and in the host family.

Location

Accra

Ghana se w Akwaaba! Welcome to Ghana! This culturally and scenically diverse country will immediately cast its spell on you. The Ghanaian way of life - the friendliness and open-mindedness of the locals - makes it easy for you to settle in quickly!

The bustling Ghanaian capital Accra, with around 2,3 million inhabitants, is located in the south of the country, directly on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. If you work in the metropolis, you can dive deep into the African urban jungle, but also get a taste of the coastal air.

In addition to traditional markets and a colorful variety of African delicacies, skyscrapers and modern shopping centers await you. Despite its size, the best way to explore the city is on foot. On the way through Accra you will always notice exciting contrasts. For example, the still existing castle from the early days of Accra, which today serves as the seat of government and is monitored in a state-of-the-art manner. Or the fishermen who continue to fish the sea the old-fashioned way and earn their living that way.

The capital may be climatically hot and initially overwhelm you with its crowded streets. But no matter whether you are in the center, in the west of the city or near the beach, Accra will convince you with culinary experiences and an excellent nightlife. So grab a few volunteers and go on a discovery tour together!

Your free time in Accra

After work and days off, you have enough time to relax and explore the area. Accra itself is a fascinating city and truly a place of contrasts. Modern shopping streets and skyscrapers meet traditional fishing settlements and old fortifications. Get acquainted with the diversity of the city on a walking tour, visit the mausoleum in Kwame Nkrumah Park and lose yourself in the hustle and bustle of the huge Makola market.

The imposing Christiansburg, also known as Osu Castle, awaits you on the coast. The former seat of government of Ghana is one of many European forts along the Gold Coast, reminiscent of a time when Ghana was a trading center for gold, ivory and slaves. Today the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For those interested in culture, a visit to the newly renovated National Museum and the cultural centers Alliance Francaise and Brazil House with their weekly evening program is always worthwhile.

If you ever get tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, we recommend a trip to one of the nearby beaches. Here you can relax between golden sands and palm trees during the day before heading out in the evening to be part of the lively nightlife.

But even further outside the city limits of Accra, Ghana still has a lot to offer that you should not miss. A special highlight is the Kakum National Park, where you have the opportunity to walk between the crowns of the jungle giants on a treetop path that is unique in Africa and marvel at the beauty of the rainforest from a height of up to 45 meters.
