Volunteer work in the street children project in Delhi

What's the matter?

There are several projects in Delhi that deal with disadvantaged children between the ages of 4 and 14. This means that as a volunteer you have the opportunity to work in different programs. These are run by non-profit organizations and are all mainly located in South Delhi, with a few also located in Old Delhi and Central Delhi.

You will mainly work in homes for street children, which are also run by NGOs and work for the well-being of the children. As Delhi is considered one of the main employment areas in the country, people from poorer areas and villages come here every day to seek work in the capital to earn a living - among them are many children. Due to various family problems and abuse, but also because of poverty, they run away from home and finally come to Delhi. However, they often don't know where they are going and get caught by drug dealers and child traffickers who are close to the train station and thus intercept the children directly.

Some non-governmental organizations work for the well-being of these children and place them in homes. Here they receive basic education, toilets and food. Attempts are also being made to reunite them with their families.

Other contact points where you work as a volunteer deal with children from poorer families who cannot afford to send their children to good schools. That's why you work here in non-formal educational centers near slums or industrial areas. In educational centers like these, the children receive basic general knowledge, as well as important learning support from volunteers like you.

The goal of your volunteer work is to support the local organizations in the development and education of the children. In addition, you bring the children a lot of joy in everyday life through the leisure activities that you do with them.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Since you work on different projects, you should be open and flexible for different tasks as a volunteer. Depending on where exactly you are deployed, your tasks will adapt accordingly.

Basically, however, you can expect the following activities:

  • Participate in informal classes: Teach the children basic English skills, but also teach them other subjects such as math, geography, etc. Also teach them to behave respectfully and educate them about healthy hygiene habits.
  • Support staff in all assigned tasks
  • Involving children in painting and handicraft activities
  • As a volunteer, you can also go on day trips with the children, for example to the zoo, a museum or an amusement park with them. The on-site staff will support you in planning and execution.

If you wish, you can bring your own games or teaching materials to make learning fun and to get the kids more involved in activities.

As a volunteer, you will work around four to five hours a day from Monday to Friday and return to your accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening. Lunch is usually eaten in a nearby restaurant (you have to pay for it yourself). You can use the free time in the evening to explore Delhi with other volunteers or to go to markets. Dinner at your accommodation is usually between 18:00 p.m. and 18:30 p.m.

In order to take part in the project, you should have good knowledge of English. A full vaccination against Covid-19 is also necessary. You should also consider the dress code during your assignment. In the areas where you work, the people are largely conservative. Tight and revealing clothing is therefore not welcomed here. Also, make sure to cover your knees and shoulders.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House Delhi

In your accommodation in Delhi you live with up to eleven other volunteers in a house. Up to four volunteers can be accommodated in one bedroom. These are separated by gender and furnished with bunk beds. Linens are provided for you.

The kitchen is fully equipped and the bathrooms are western-style with toilets and showers. The home also has free internet, a TV, and air conditioning.

Your accommodation will be cleaned and you will receive breakfast and dinner every day except Sunday. In your vicinity there are also many shopping facilities. For example, there are many markets nearby where you can get something to eat. But you can also do other everyday shopping here. There are also ATMs, cafes and restaurants.

You usually travel to work independently using public transport. The projects are all well connected to the public transport network. The best way to get to your place of work is by auto rickshaw, metro or Uber. Please note that the cost of public transport is not included. So plan around €15 per week for this.

Location

Delhi.

Delhi is the major metropolis in northern India and also the country's “National Capital Territory” as the territory includes the capital New Delhi. After Mumbai (Bombay), Delhi is the second largest city in India with around 22.000.000 inhabitants.

Due to the thousand-year history of the metropolis, the cityscape is also very diverse. In addition to numerous bazaars, magnificent temples and mosques, there are also impressive buildings from the Mughal era. In Old Delhi you can stroll through narrow streets and through the markets. In New Delhi, on the other hand, you will find large government buildings, avenues and beautiful gardens.

So if you would like to immerse yourself in the life and hustle and bustle of a diverse city, Delhi is ideal for you! Here you will get to know India and its people in all their diversity without having to forego the comforts of a city. You can also learn a lot about the history, the living environment and various customs here.

Free time in Delhi

Your free time in Delhi

Your accommodation and locations are located in the south of the metropolis Delhi. There are numerous markets where you can get great food and shop for your daily needs. You can also buy clothes and souvenirs at markets nearby.

India's capital is divided into Old Delhi, which was the capital of India's Mughal Empire until 1857, and New Delhi, the district that grew up around the old city. In Old Delhi you can stroll through the winding little streets of Chandni Chowk through the bazaar district. You will meet the Red Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Friday Mosque and Delhi's most important memorial, which was built in honor of Gandhi: Raj Ghat. New Delhi is no less remarkable. Here you can expect impressive government buildings, beautiful gardens and avenues as well as some monuments worth seeing, such as the soldiers' monument India Gate and Qutab Minar, India's largest minaret.

But you can also discover a lot outside of the capital. Our on-site team regularly organizes tours to the most important sights in the region. How about a trip to Agra and Jaipur, for example? Together with Delhi, the two cities form the so-called Golden Triangle. The world-famous Taj Mahal is in Agra. The mausoleum was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as an expression of his love for his late wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Red Fort in Agra and the Friday and Pearl Mosques are also worth a visit.

Many visitors are drawn to Jaipur because of the pink old town. That is why the city is also known as the “Pink City”. Attractions such as the Galta Ji Temple with its monkeys, Jantar Mantar, the world's largest observatory and Hawa Mahal, the city's landmark with its around 1000 picturesque niches and windows round off your visit to Jaipur.

North of Delhi lies Rishikesh. On the banks of the Ganges and at the foot of the huge Himalayan mountains you will find one thing above all here: temple complexes and meditation centers. Therefore, the relatively small city is considered the capital of yoga. Rishikesh became famous when the Beatles retreated to the Maharishi Mahesh Yoga Ashram to meditate in the 1960s. Do the same for them!

RGV FAQ
to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for India?

To enter the country you must apply for a tourist visa in advance.
The one-year ETA (One year e-Tourist Visa), which is valid for 365 days from the date of issue, is particularly practical. However, you can stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days at a time. For longer stays, a short stay in Nepal or Sri Lanka is recommended so that you can then enter the country again for 90 days.

The application must be submitted at least four days before entering India. The cost is around €40-80.

What language skills do I need for the project?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have good English skills.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

Is there an age limit for the project?

Volunteers between the ages of 17 and 60 can take part in the project.

What are the requirements for the social project?

There are no special requirements for participation. What is important is enjoyment of working with children, a sense of responsibility, exemplary behavior, use of appropriate language, initiative and empathy. Comfortable clothing appropriate for a children's center is recommended, as is clothing that can get dirty (when painting, for example). Smoking should not be allowed in the presence of children.

What do I have to bring?

Long, neat clothing that covers knees and arms, and sturdy shoes.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.

What else is there to consider?

Please note that this project always ends on Saturdays. You can book additional overnight stays for a fee.
