Volunteer work in street children project in Ghana field report

The work in the street children project in Accra was a lot of fun and joy for me. I looked after the 0-6 year old children there, swaddled them, washed them, fed them and taught them little things. They have partially learned to walk and speak. Every kind of development I experienced in this project made me super happy. After a while you notice how the children trust you and that can no longer be taken from you.

Maria's time in Ghana

My projects for the foreign assignment

Now I would like to tell you about my great time in Ghana. I was there for 8 weeks as a volunteer in a street children project in Accra.

My goals for this stay abroad in Ghana were to get to know a new culture, to improve my English language skills and to appreciate my own homeland. I am happy to say that I have achieved all three goals.

The Ghanaian culture

Ghana is an incredible country with a great openness and joie de vivre, which the people can convey very well. One lives more light-heartedly and carefree, although one has fewer means at one's disposal. Ghana has helped me a lot in my thinking and acting. I have developed and grown through this stay.

My experience in street children project

The work in the street children project in Accra was a lot of fun and joy for me. I looked after the 0-6 year old children there, swaddled them, washed them, fed them and taught them little things. They have partially learned to walk and speak. Every kind of development I experienced in this project made me super happy. After a while you notice how the children trust you and that can no longer be taken from you. Every child's laughter makes one forget the actual poverty in which the children live.

The great Rainbow Family

The times abroad, far away from home, were not always easy, but the large volunteer family gives you support. You are also welcomed and integrated very nicely in the host family, so that you have the feeling of being a family member right from the start. Living with a host family gives you a taste of Ghanaian life.

Leisure activities in Ghana

We traveled a lot at the weekend. There are many wonderful places to visit. In addition to the Castel and Kakum National Parc in Cape Coast, the great beach in Busua, the Wli Waterfalls in the Volta Region & a chillout place in Ada-Foah, it is definitely worth a trip to the north of Ghana. There you can see elephants, buffalo, monkeys and antelopes in the Mole National Park.

Conclusion to my volunteer work: To valuable experience richer!

Ghana has helped me a lot in my way of thinking and acting for my life and I will definitely not miss the time. Great experiences, great people and a great atmosphere.
