The most important things about volunteering as a family
Requirements for volunteering abroad with a child
A child should also be prepared for such an adventure. One option, for example, is to go through a children's travel atlas to the destination country together and explain what is different there than in your usual surroundings. The foreign landscapes, animals and food that await you usually also arouse interest. Of course, this requires intensive engagement with your host country and its culture.
Also important is the travel preparation and to find out about health risks, recommended vaccinations, etc. in good time.
age of the child
For family work abroad, your child should be at least 5 years old. Knowledge of English is an advantage for the children, but of course not a requirement.
What about childcare?
When a family is involved in a kindergarten or crèche, the question arises as to whether it is possible to simply take your child with you to the project. This may be possible, but must be clarified individually depending on the volunteer project.
We usually support small, financially weak institutions that often have different standards. The children in these institutions often come from difficult backgrounds and some show behavioral problems. German or European children can therefore have difficulties finding their way around there. When you register, ask us what the situation is like in your desired project.
On site
Different countries, different customs - to protect the child, a clear local agreement is extremely important. It is important for the child to know where you live, what they can and cannot do, and how to keep themselves occupied in your absence. You will learn more about the customs and culture of each host country during your orientation program.
In my free time, away from my commitments volunteer project or the Internship, family activities should of course be child-friendly and age-appropriate as much as possible. The climate and the changeover can be very exhausting, especially at the beginning. That's why it's all the more important not to overwhelm your child.
