Teaching English in Hua Hin, Thailand

What's the matter?

English as a world language also plays an important role in Thailand. For children, it has a major impact on their job prospects and chances of escaping poverty. In the monasteries, language skills are an important skill to be able to communicate with foreigners.

An organization in Hua Hin works to ensure that socially disadvantaged children, such as orphans and children with a migration background, but also members of the monasteries, such as monks, novices and nuns, can learn English with the help of volunteers. This should give them better opportunities in everyday life.

Away from the tourist strongholds, English is still not very common in Thailand. The problem starts in childhood. Although English is usually taught from the first grade, not every child has access to English classes because state schools often lack the necessary funds to hire teachers.

That is why many monasteries and schools work together with orphanages and communities and offer free lessons, especially to socially disadvantaged children. The ability to speak English increases the chances of getting better paying jobs and thus escaping poverty.

In addition to the courses offered for children, English also plays an important role for the members of the monasteries themselves. Monks and novices are often visited by foreign visitors and asked for spiritual guidance. They also meet regularly with Buddhist monks from other countries, especially Myanmar and Cambodia, where different languages are spoken. Here, English acts as an important bridging language for mutual exchange.

The aim of this project is to offer the monks, novices and nuns, but also disadvantaged children, more opportunities through English lessons. Be it to better exchange ideas with people who speak other languages or to improve future career prospects and thus escape poverty.

During your stay, you'll have the opportunity to take part in included excursions, including a Thai cooking class and Muay Thai training. In the cooking class you will be introduced to the art of preparing Pad Thai, the Thai national dish, and Som Tam, a refreshing papaya salad. You will gain insights into the history of these dishes, watch Thai chefs at work and then be able to lend a hand yourself under expert guidance.

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and a form of martial arts. You visit a local gym where experienced Muay Thai trainers will teach you the basic techniques.

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer in this project, you will be a teacher and give English lessons to monks, novices, nuns and disadvantaged children. On the other hand, you will learn a lot yourself because you will take part in various Buddhist teachings and practices during your stay. The following activities are awaiting you:

  • hold English classes
  • prepare lessons
  • conduct workshops
  • Prepare games and other activities
  • Guided meditations and teaching about the meaning, role and forms of meditation
  • Received teaching on Buddhist traditions
  • Dharma talks with monks
  • Participate in and observe Buddhist activities at the temple

Please note that the daily schedule and the size of your classes may vary as classes are voluntary. If you are flexible and understanding, your lessons will be a complete success and you will have a lot of fun!

You usually work about two to four hours a day from Monday to Friday. Sometimes it can also happen that you should support in the monastery school at the weekend. Then you would get another day off as compensation instead. In general, you have a lot of free time in this project, which you can use to delve deeper into the culture and way of life in Thailand.

Hua Hin in Thailand

Hua Hin

Hua Hin is located in central Thailand on the Gulf of Thailand. The place is mainly known for its beautiful white sandy beaches and is therefore a popular bathing resort. But the city has also retained its traditional charm.

In addition to the beaches, Hua Hin is also known for its night market. Here you can buy everything your heart desires: There is not only traditional food here, but also handmade art objects, as well as clothing and souvenirs.

Another attraction is the old railway station in Hua Hin. It is considered one of the first railway stations in Thailand, because the royal family used to like to travel by train to their summer residence in Hua Hin. Hua Hin's nature is at least as spectacular. Vineyards, caves and waterfalls in the middle of a pristine rainforest can be found here.

So if you like spending time at the beach, this place is ideal for you! But you can also discover the local culture and everyday life of the locals as well as different landscapes here - best through the many activities offered on site.

Stroll through the famous Night Market where you can buy clothes, souvenirs or handmade art and taste traditional food. In addition, you can benefit from the lively city center with its many restaurants, shopping centers and gyms that are close to your accommodation.

If instead you long for some distance from the urban hustle and bustle, the endless palm-fringed sandy beaches offer you the perfect place to relax. The beaches also offer you the opportunity to play beach volleyball, snorkel or go horseback riding on the beach - so sports lovers also get their money's worth in Hua Hin.

In general, not only the beaches, but the entire nature of Hua Hin is incredibly spectacular. The city is the ideal starting point for excursions to impressive national parks. Adventure seekers will definitely get their money's worth here - the roaring streams and rivers invite you to go on wild rafting tours. In addition, you should not miss the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. Thailand is well known for various festivals, which are also celebrated in Hua Hin. An example of this is the Thai light festival Loy Krathong, one of the most important and probably also the most beautiful festivals in Thailand. Here, people gather at a river, where they float candles and incense sticks on small rafts into the water. Another festival you shouldn't miss if you're in Thailand in April is the Songkran Festival, the traditional Thai New Year celebration. While in the country people still celebrate according to old traditions, wild water fights take place on the streets in the city.

In general, social events are very popular in Thailand. The team in Thailand will endeavor to organize a welcome dinner and other social events where possible. In Hua Hin you will certainly not get bored as a volunteer.
