Turtle from the wildlife conservation project in Sri Lanka

What's the matter?

Sri Lanka with its great variety of wild animals not only inspires locals, but also tourists and travelers. Five of a total of seven sea turtle species live on the island state. The capture and killing of the animals has been prohibited for decades and the sea turtle is a protected species. However, poachers, fishing nets, weather conditions, pollution and many other causes are leading to a decline in the number of egg-laying turtles in Sri Lanka and thus to the extinction of the remaining turtle species. Through your commitment on our turtle farm, we can counteract this together and contribute to the continued preservation of turtle biodiversity.

The aim of the project is to preserve the diversity of nature by helping endangered turtle species to settle and reproduce as much as possible. In order to make this possible, the turtle's habitat must also be regularly cleaned and cared for.

Your tasks as a volunteer

In this project you support the local team in caring for the turtles and contribute to the preservation of their habitat.

The working hours will be discussed with you at the beginning. Work is always carried out five days a week, with the daily working time not exceeding eight hours. You usually work about three hours a day (09:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.). The turtle farm is not on the same premises as the accommodation, so all volunteers are taken to the turtle farm by a 20-minute drive by private bus and brought back to the accommodation after work.

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation at Turtle Farm in Galle

Accommodation in Galle is organized with a host family, where you share a room with one or two other volunteers. The rooms are divided according to gender. The host family is very experienced in dealing with our volunteers. However, you should note that they are not exceptionally good at English communication.

The accommodations are equipped with bathrooms and include free Wi-Fi. Washing machines are also available to do your laundry. You pay your host family a small fee for using the washing machine.

Location

Southwest Sri Lanka

Southwest Sri Lanka

Beautiful coasts, cities with hip cafés, small boutiques and a mix of museums, old churches and mosques await you at our location in the south-west of Sri Lanka.

In the historic port city of Galle you can admire the impressive architecture, which is strongly influenced by the Dutch colonial era. The old town of Fort Galle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is surrounded by the sea on three sides. A railway line connects the port city with the capital Colombo. A large seaport was established there after colonization, which meant that the seaport of Galle, which was famous at the time, lost its importance. However, Galle cannot be denied the name of the “cutest port town”.

Here you can combine beach walks and city tours! This location is perfect, especially if you want to get involved in animal and nature conservation!

Your free time in Southwest Sri Lanka

Your free time in Southwest Sri Lanka

After your work on the project, you will have the opportunity in your free time to explore the stunning area of your location.

For example, visit the small port town of Galle, where you can hang out in hip cafes or browse cute boutiques and souvenir shops. The city is also the right place for history buffs who want to find out more about the country's past - because the influence of the Dutch colonialists can still be clearly felt here. The Galle Fort, for example, is said to be the largest surviving European fort in South Asia! Both this and the old town of Galle are part of the UNESCO World Heritage and definitely worth a visit.

Not far from Galle is the well-known Unawatuna Beach - one of the most beautiful beaches in the country and a real Mecca for yogis and surfers. If you want to learn to surf and relax under coconut trees at the same time, you should definitely pay a visit to Unawatuna Beach.

You can also explore the directly adjacent rainforest that characterizes the south-west of Sri Lanka. Here you will find incredible biodiversity and, with a bit of luck, you can spot animals such as the endangered Ceylon elephant, the Sri Lankan leopard or various species of monkeys.

If you want to go on a weekend trip, Mirissa, about an hour from Galle, is a good place to go. Here you have the opportunity to go on whale watching tours during the day and to take advantage of the extensive range of water sports. As soon as the sun has set, you can plunge into the hustle and bustle of the nightlife and enjoy the many hippie bars right on the beach.
