Voluntary work in child care in Badulla, Sri Lanka
- Surrounded by nature
- High recreational value
- Diverse cuisine
Support a kindergarten either in a rural region of Sri Lanka or on the coast by teaching the children and the carers English and helping with other activities.
What's the matter?
In Sri Lanka there is often a shortage of carers and teachers in kindergartens and schools. you can support different kindergartens. Therefore you will support in this project in a kindergarten in a rural province or on the coast.
You will be employed in various care facilities. All kindergartens are relatively well equipped and take between 20 and 30 children who look forward to doing handicrafts, singing and playing with you.
But you can also get involved in English lessons. Because especially in the rural provinces, where there is still a lot of agriculture and little tourism, people often speak bad English. Therefore, as an English teacher, you can not only shine with the children here, but you are also welcome to pass on your knowledge to the adults.
The aim of the project is to support the children more comprehensively and, with your support, to give them a good basis for their future school education.
Your tasks as a volunteer
Regardless of your previous knowledge, you can take on a variety of tasks as a volunteer in this project, for example helping to prepare the classrooms or helping the teachers with the academic units.
If you want to be more involved in looking after the children, you can play, sing and dance with them. Your own creative ideas are welcome here. It is important to actively approach the kindergarten staff and ask where your support is needed. So your stay will be a complete success and a great experience!
Your working day usually starts at 8 a.m. when the first children start kindergarten and ends around 11:30 a.m. You usually work there from Monday to Friday.

Location
Badulla
Badulla is located in the interior of southeastern Sri Lanka and was for a long time the seat of the Sinhala prince before it became part of the British Empire. Even today in Badulla, for example, the clock tower recalls the colonial past.
The place is not known for tea production for nothing, as there are many tea plantations around the city. The tea from this area is even considered to be one of the best in the country. But Badulla also has a lot to offer in other respects. In the heart of the city is the Buddhist Muthiyangana Temple, which is one of the 16 sacred sites in the country.
The city of 40.000 is also an important transport hub, since the main line of Sri Lanka's railway ends here. Located on the Badulu Oya River, Badulla also offers a lot of nature and is a good starting point for hikes.
So here you can both visit the sights of the city and learn a lot about the history and everyday life of Badulla, as well as explore the landscapes, with valleys, waterfalls and more.
Your free time in Badulla
Relaxing on sandy beaches, hiking in the mountains and visiting colorful temples - all this awaits you during your free time in Badulla.
The area around Badulla is best known for its tea production and the huge tea plantations. It is even said that the best tea in the whole country is made there. So you should definitely try this one.
In the heart of the city is the Mahiyangana Temple. According to Buddhist belief, Gautama Buddha himself visited this temple. That is why it is one of the 16 holy places in the country. In addition to the religious significance of the temple, it is a sight that you should not miss because of its beautiful architecture.
If you are drawn to nature, you should definitely visit the 63 meter high Dunhinda Waterfall. It is about five kilometers north of Badulla and you can get there by bus from Badulla bus station. About 60 kilometers south of Badulla there is another impressive waterfall, the Diyaluma Falls. The water rushes over the rocks from a height of 220 meters.
Halfway to Diyaluma Waterfall you will pass Ella Rock. You can also take part in a guided hike to Ella Rock. But don't underestimate the hike. She's really exhausting. But the fantastic view is worth it, even more so when you get to the top.
