What's the matter?

Motivated by his love of surfing, Nigel started the project together with his wife Sher'Neil. The vision was and is to improve the situation in the crime and drug-ridden community. He realized what an influence the environment has on the children and there were hardly any contact points or programs for them to motivate them and to exert a positive influence on the children. Surfing strengthens self-esteem and helps children develop well.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Depending on your skills and interests, you will be deployed accordingly. Your duties will vary between leading a class, such as art, cooking, fitness, computers. You can give the children one-to-one lessons, teach them English and help them with their homework. The cleaning of the premises is also sometimes necessary. A hands-on mentality is required here - everyone lends a hand. The main thing is that you will support the trainers in the fitness, swimming and surfing courses with the children.

From time to time you take part in an adventure trip with the children and also help the local staff to look after the kids. If you are media savvy, feel free to take photos and videos for marketing. This also includes working in the community kitchens, as well as work in the communities, sorting donations or setting up and dismantling events. Maybe you also have talent in fundraising and can support the department head there or do administrative tasks. As you can see - the tasks and areas in which you can get involved are very diverse!

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House near Cape Town

The rooms are bright, friendly and very inviting! Your accommodation is located 15 km from Cape Town city center and 3 km from a shopping mall. You can easily reach both by public transport. The house can accommodate up to 14 volunteers in seven rooms, each with two beds and a private bathroom. You can book a single room for an extra charge. WiFi is available but not included in the services. A cleaning lady cleans the premises three days a week, but we ask that you always leave the kitchen and bathroom as you found them.

RGV host families in Cape Town

For a small additional fee, you can also live with a host family during your time in Cape Town.

Our host families are part of the South African “middle class”, so running water and electricity are available. In addition to breakfast, you will also get dinner here every day.

As a volunteer or intern abroad, you are usually not alone in a host family, but share the accommodation with one to five other participants. As in the Volunteer House, it is possible to travel to and from the project together. If you come home after dark, the costs of transport such as taxis or Uber can be shared.

Only a few host families have an internet connection or WLAN. If you need internet, you can get a prepaid SIM card with mobile data volume. The advantages compared to living in a volunteer house are that you speak a lot more English here in everyday life and you get a deeper insight into the culture and way of life of the local people. You are not in a pack of volunteers, but can gather very individual experiences with a few others.

You usually also have a shorter journey to the project, because our team will place you nearby if possible. The Team Office, which is attached to one of our Volunteer Homes, is your central point of contact and meeting point for excursions and activities!

Tip: If you want to live alone with a host family, you should explicitly discuss this with us before registering. Single accommodation is usually possible.

Attention: Most of our host families are strictly religious, so unmarried couples, for example, are not accepted in a room.

Location

Beach fountain in South Africa

Discover the surfer's paradise of South Africa! Your place of work is the kilometer-long sandy beach in the south of the country not far from Cape Town. It was named one of the 20 most beautiful surfing locations in the world by National Geographic magazine! The surfing region is particularly ideal for beginners: the sea has gentle waves and "shark spotters" protect the coast.

Strandfontein has a long history of surfing: surfing has had cult status here for more than 100 years. In the 1960s, when the "beach lifestyle" became fashionable, the coastal town was the heart of the "surf culture" in South Africa. The small Cape Town suburb has a laid-back vibe, although tourism has increased here in recent years. The high cliffs also provide the perfect spot for spotting whales in the sea.

Especially if you are enthusiastic about surfing - whether you are a beginner or an advanced surfer - you are in the right place in Strandfontein! Immerse yourself in the easy-going lifestyle and enjoy the beautiful beach! Hang loose!

Free time in Strandfontein

Your free time in Strandfontein

In your free time, relax in the idyllic village of Strandfontein on the west coast of South Africa. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere on the picturesque beaches. The main beach there offers kilometers of sandy beach - perfect for just chilling out in your free time or enjoying the spectacular view of the Atlantic during a long walk on the beach.

Strandfontein also offers some more active leisure options. In the area there are several marked hiking trails that lead through the rocky hills and flat bushland. These trails are ideal for anyone wanting to discover the region's wildlife. Other free time activities you can do after volunteering or at the weekend include kayaking or fishing. The turquoise-blue waters in the area are ideal for excursions of this kind. Strandfontein is not only known for its beautiful beach and fascinating waters, but also for its bird life, among other things. There are several nature reserves in the vicinity that are home to a variety of birds, but you can also spot wildlife there. A highlight is definitely the nature reserve Elandsberg.

What you should also try in your free time are the local culinary specialties. Strandfontein has a number of restaurants with excellent cuisine. But you can also find plenty of other shops where you can buy local products or unique souvenirs to keep your memories of this special place alive.

On-site procedure

Arrival in Cape Town

Arrival in Cape Town

For your project in South Africa, you will first land directly in Cape Town. Here you will be met at the airport by a member of our RGV team in South Africa. From here the team will drive you directly to your accommodation. The drive from the airport is already a first small highlight: you see beautiful landscapes, the city and Table Mountain. You can use the rest of the day to move into your accommodation and to get to know your new surroundings.

Orientation in Strandfontein

Orientation program in South Africa

In order to be able to find your way around better in your new environment, your stay begins with an orientation program. On the evening of your arrival at the Volunteer House, an orientation dinner awaits you, where you will get to know the team and the other volunteers in the project. Here you will receive valuable information about the daily routine, everyday life and safety on site. Useful tips on transport, withdrawing money, shopping, etc. are also part of the programme.

Immediately after your arrival, our team will give you your South Africa starter package with a city map, SIM card and other useful things that should make your everyday life easier. In your accommodation you will also receive a brief introduction to the area and your new home.

Volunteer project in Strandfontein

Your first day in the project

On the Monday after the orientation, your project will really get going! You help with surfing lessons or make your first attempts on the surfboard yourself. Your project location is always as close as possible to your accommodation. On your first day at work, you will be accompanied to your assignment site either by our team or by other volunteers. The further course of your project work will then be discussed with you there.

There are several ways to get to your project. The following travel options are available to you:

  • rental car
  • Taxi or Uber
  • For safety reasons, we advise against using public transport.

The rental car is a cheap and worthwhile alternative to public transport, since not all places can be reached by public transport. As a rule, 3-5 participants rent a car together and form carpools.
