Environmental protection project in South Africa

What's the matter?

Your place of work is a non-profit organization from the Greater Kruger National Park area. The NGO seeks sustainable solutions to the problems that people and nature in the region are most concerned about. For example, poverty, unemployment, a lack of education or the destruction of the environment. Both the environment and the local residents should benefit from the concepts of the initiative.

The region around our location in the Greater Kruger National Park is considered one of the poorest in South Africa. Due to the high unemployment and the low level of education, it is hardly possible for the residents to break out of poverty and improve their living conditions in the long term.

With many people barely earning enough to adequately support their families, poaching has become a lucrative source of income. A major threat to elephants, lions, pangolins and many other rare species in Kruger National Park. But the destruction of natural ecosystems, environmental pollution and ongoing climate change are also endangering nature around your deployment site.

The aim of the NGO is to work with the residents of the surrounding communities to develop concepts, business models and life plans that benefit both people and nature. To this end, the organization has launched various programs in recent years.

For example, recycling programs help conserve natural resources while reducing pollution. Agroecology courses impart know-how on how local agriculture can be operated as efficiently, water-savingly and resiliently as possible. And to counteract poaching, the NGO is working on concepts for “wildlife buffer zones” that are intended to prevent conflicts between humans and animals.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Before you can really start your work in the environmental project, you first have to understand the situation at your place of work. For this reason, every volunteer starts with an introductory week on site. Here you will get to know all the NGO projects step by step by working in one of the programs every morning. In the afternoons of your first week you support the staff in the After School Club.

After the introductory week, you will work in a weekly program (recycling, sewing & farm program). Here you can get really creative and contribute your own ideas and concepts. Together with your local contacts, you discuss your interests and skills and choose the tasks that suit you. The main thing is that the focus is on environmental protection.

These programs await you at your place of work:

  • Recycling Center: Manufacture of recycled products such as jewelry, candles, crockery, glass, etc.; Organizational work, sorting of materials
  • Sewing project: production of sustainable products, such as hats, bags, reusable tampons (as donations to schools together with information brochures) etc.
  • Farm Project: Agroecology; environmentally sound irrigation, planting and harvesting; Manufacture of products such as sauces, syrup, flour etc.; Creating hydroponics
  • After School Club: Supervising the children in class and on excursions, helping with their homework, playing with the children, developing a varied educational program with a focus on environmental and sustainability issues
  • Pre-school program: supporting the educators, supervising the children, playing with the children, focus on early childhood development and environmental education

No matter which program you ultimately get involved in and what activities you pursue - you will normally work from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 16 p.m. Between 12:13 p.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. you have a lunch break and can fortify yourself with a South African lunch.

Location

Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa

Greater Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is located in north-eastern South Africa, about a four-hour drive from Johannesburg, and at almost 20.000 square kilometers is the country's largest animal and nature reserve. With its incredible biodiversity and impressive landscape, the park is one of the absolute highlights of every trip to South Africa and a dream destination for travelers from all over the world.

Over 140 species of mammals as well as hundreds of birds, reptiles, fish and various other rare animals find shelter in the Kruger National Park. Of course you can also discover the famous Big Five - elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo and lion - here. However, the landscape of the park is at least as exciting as the animals. Depending on the region and season, breathtaking views of dense forests, endless grass and tree savannahs, striking rocks and mountains or the characteristic baobab trees open up to you.

Nature and wildlife fans in particular are in good hands here!

Free time in the Greater Kruger National Park

Your free time in the Greater Kruger National Park

After work you can use your free time to build a fire together with the other volunteers in your accommodation, have a barbecue, relax by the pool or enjoy the sunset with a drink at the bar. If you have a little more time, for example on the weekends, you should definitely explore your surroundings.

How about a safari in the Kruger National Park, for example? Go in search of the Big Five and hundreds of other rare animals, or simply marvel at the unique landscape of the park. There is probably only more nature to experience on a bush walk: Together with a ranger, you explore the national park on foot and enjoy nature in a completely natural and authentic way.

Also worth a visit is the Blyde River Canyon, the largest green canyon in the world. It doesn't matter whether you explore the turquoise blue water by boat or enjoy the incredible view of the green-covered gorge from the panorama route - a detour to the Blyde River Canyon is always an experience. If you are looking for a change after all that nature, the tourist town of Hoedspruit is not far away and is also worth a visit.
