Volunteering with big cats in South Africa
- Surrounded by nature
- work with wildlife
- Joint excursions
In this project you will collect unforgettable experiences around the care, care and protection of big cats. As you work, you can look "behind the scenes" at the Raubkatzen Reserve and get actively involved in wildlife conservation.
What's the matter?
Observing lions, leopards and cheetahs in their natural environment is one of the highlights of a South African holiday. In hardly any other region of the world is it possible to get so close to the great big cats. What many tourists don't know, however, is that these big cats are among the most endangered animals on earth.
Lions in particular are suffering greatly from the increasing loss of their habitats and their prey by humans. There are also conflicts with farmers and settlers or the threat of poachers. In some regions of Africa, the “king of animals” is already threatened with extinction: while there were more than 1970 lions in the 400.000s, their number has shrunk to around 30.000 today, according to estimates.
But there is also hope: In the protected areas in southern Africa, the number of big cats is increasing again, as researchers have found. They believe that well-organized and well-funded sanctuaries play a major role in saving lions and other big cats.
As a volunteer you will work for a non-profit big cat sanctuary. It is surrounded by nature in the Western Cape Province, about a two-hour drive from Cape Town. Big cats that were caught in zoos or circuses, for example, have found a home on around 40 hectares.
The facility also sees itself as an educational platform: visitors can learn more about the living conditions of big cats in captivity and how important it is to enable them to be kept in a species-appropriate manner. The project does not pet lion cubs, nor breed or sell big cats. The welfare of the animal is always the focus.
Your tasks as a volunteer
You will help prepare food for the big cats, feed them, clean and maintain their enclosures, make toys for them, etc. In addition, you will do general chores related to the farm. You also assist when groups of visitors are informed about the project and the living conditions of the big cats.
Your working hours depend on whether you are on site in the summer or winter months, i.e. how high the temperatures are and how long it is light. Your working day begins with a team meeting: Every morning you meet with the employees and other volunteers to talk about the upcoming tasks.

Every Wednesday you have the opportunity to shop at a nearby grocery store. You buy the ingredients for your dinner yourself.
Once a week your laundry is washed for free.
Location
Western Cape
The project site is in the Overberg region – a rural, hilly area about two hours from Cape Town. Located on the southern coast of the Western Cape Province, between the Cape Peninsula (with the Cape of Good Hope) and the famous Garden Route, there is much to discover here.
The region is surrounded by mountains and sea: to the west rise the Hottentots-Holland mountains, to the north the Riviersonderend mountains. Overberg is bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans to the south and the Breede River to the east. In the area you will find many small villages and coastal towns, each with its own charm.
Here you don't have to choose between mountains and sea, because everyone gets their money's worth here! If you want to explore the diverse nature of the Western Cape, you've come to the right place!
Your free time in Western Cape
You can spend your free time in the Western Cape in different ways, because this region offers both a varied culture and a fascinating natural and animal world that is just waiting to be discovered by you!
In your free time, you can go wine tasting or explore the many wine cellars while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Because Western Cape is known for its wineries and vineyards.
But there are other ways to experience Western Cape culture. This region has a rich cultural history with many traditions of local people. So if you feel like learning more about it in your free time, you can go to the District Six Museum in Cape Town or the Klein Karoo Kunstefees in Oudtshoorn, for example.
You can also take a trip to Cape Town, one of the most famous cities in South Africa. There you have a number of leisure options, including beaches, museums, galleries and historical sites such as the Cape of Good Hope.
Above all, the nature in the Western Cape is beautiful! Go hiking or mountaineering - Table Mountain or a hike in the Helderberg Mountains are just two of many options for enjoying the landscape. There are also many national parks and reserves in the Western Cape where you can experience wildlife. For example, observe wild animals in the Kruger National Park or in the West Coast National Park.
Furthermore, Western Cape is a popular destination for surfers due to the good surfing conditions. Among other things, Muizenberg beach is known for its perfect waves and is definitely worth a visit - whether you want to surf there yourself or just watch the surfers on the water!
So you see - you certainly won't get bored in your free time in the Western Cape!
