Medical internship in Delhi for prospective doctors

What's the matter?

In this internship you have the opportunity to work directly in the center of the Indian capital Delhi. Such a project gives you valuable international experience for your medical studies and gives you insights into different techniques.

During your medical internship, you will work in a large hospital in a good area in southern Delhi. The hospitals where you will work as an intern are among the leading clinics in the Indian health center and have been setting a national benchmark in medicine for nine decades. Three generations have been treated with great care and dedication by these first-class hospitals. The full-care hospital in which you will be deployed offers very good basic equipment and infrastructure for patient care and treatment.

During your time as an intern you will work with a doctor, nurse or other medical professional and mainly observe them at work or assist them with basic assistance work.

You also have the opportunity to work in different areas within the clinic. Your assignment location will do its best to place you in your desired department if there is availability.

You can do your medical internship in the following departments:

  • emergency department
  • Inpatient treatment
  • Laboratory
  • Blood bank
  • Radiology
  • Dialysis
  • intensive care unit
  • Nursing
  • Occupational / occupational therapy

Your internship abroad in the medical field

On your first day you will be taken to your assignment location and get to know your colleagues there.

On the following days you will leave your accommodation after breakfast and make your way to the hospital to start around 9:30 am. You will get your lunch in the cafeteria of the hospital (you have to pay for this yourself). Around 16:00 p.m. you finish your work in the clinic and have the rest of the day or evening to yourself. You can do something with the other volunteers and explore Delhi and the markets, for example, or simply relax in your accommodation. Dinner is between 18:00 and 18:30.

Normally you work from Monday to Friday. However, since this is a medical activity that is based on the needs of the patients, your work schedule can also change at short notice. Please be mindful of this and be flexible with your working hours.

The hospital can be easily reached by public transport such as an auto rickshaw. (Your travel expenses to the project and during your free time are also not included and have to be borne by yourself)

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House Delhi

In your accommodation in Delhi you live with up to eleven other volunteers in a house. Up to four volunteers can be accommodated in one bedroom. These are separated by gender and furnished with bunk beds. Linens are provided for you.

The kitchen is fully equipped and the bathrooms are western-style with toilets and showers. The home also has free internet, a TV, and air conditioning.

Your accommodation will be cleaned and you will receive breakfast and dinner every day except Sunday. In your vicinity there are also many shopping facilities. For example, there are many markets nearby where you can get something to eat. But you can also do other everyday shopping here. There are also ATMs, cafes and restaurants.

You usually travel to work independently using public transport. The projects are all well connected to the public transport network. The best way to get to your place of work is by auto rickshaw, metro or Uber. Please note that the cost of public transport is not included. So plan around €15 per week for this.

Location

Delhi.

Delhi is the major metropolis in northern India and also the country's “National Capital Territory” as the territory includes the capital New Delhi. After Mumbai (Bombay), Delhi is the second largest city in India with around 22.000.000 inhabitants.

Due to the thousand-year history of the metropolis, the cityscape is also very diverse. In addition to numerous bazaars, magnificent temples and mosques, there are also impressive buildings from the Mughal era. In Old Delhi you can stroll through narrow streets and through the markets. In New Delhi, on the other hand, you will find large government buildings, avenues and beautiful gardens.

So if you would like to immerse yourself in the life and hustle and bustle of a diverse city, Delhi is ideal for you! Here you will get to know India and its people in all their diversity without having to forego the comforts of a city. You can also learn a lot about the history, the living environment and various customs here.

Free time in Delhi

Your free time in Delhi

Your accommodation and locations are located in the south of the metropolis Delhi. There are numerous markets where you can get great food and shop for your daily needs. You can also buy clothes and souvenirs at markets nearby.

India's capital is divided into Old Delhi, which was the capital of India's Mughal Empire until 1857, and New Delhi, the district that grew up around the old city. In Old Delhi you can stroll through the winding little streets of Chandni Chowk through the bazaar district. You will meet the Red Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Friday Mosque and Delhi's most important memorial, which was built in honor of Gandhi: Raj Ghat. New Delhi is no less remarkable. Here you can expect impressive government buildings, beautiful gardens and avenues as well as some monuments worth seeing, such as the soldiers' monument India Gate and Qutab Minar, India's largest minaret.

But you can also discover a lot outside of the capital. Our on-site team regularly organizes tours to the most important sights in the region. How about a trip to Agra and Jaipur, for example? Together with Delhi, the two cities form the so-called Golden Triangle. The world-famous Taj Mahal is in Agra. The mausoleum was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as an expression of his love for his late wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Red Fort in Agra and the Friday and Pearl Mosques are also worth a visit.

Many visitors are drawn to Jaipur because of the pink old town. That is why the city is also known as the “Pink City”. Attractions such as the Galta Ji Temple with its monkeys, Jantar Mantar, the world's largest observatory and Hawa Mahal, the city's landmark with its around 1000 picturesque niches and windows round off your visit to Jaipur.

North of Delhi lies Rishikesh. On the banks of the Ganges and at the foot of the huge Himalayan mountains you will find one thing above all here: temple complexes and meditation centers. Therefore, the relatively small city is considered the capital of yoga. Rishikesh became famous when the Beatles retreated to the Maharishi Mahesh Yoga Ashram to meditate in the 1960s. Do the same for them!

RGV FAQ
to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for India?

To enter the country you must apply for a tourist visa in advance.
The one-year ETA (One year e-Tourist Visa), which is valid for 365 days from the date of issue, is particularly practical. However, you can stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days at a time. For longer stays, a short stay in Nepal or Sri Lanka is recommended so that you can then enter the country again for 90 days.

The application must be submitted at least four days before entering India. The cost is around €40-80.

What language skills do I need for the project?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have good English skills.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

What are the requirements for the project?

The internship is available for prospective medical students or those who are already studying medicine. Nursing staff can also take part in this project.

All interns must adhere to the dress code. This means professional attire, such as a white coat, must be worn. It's also a good idea to have a stethoscope with you at all times while you work. Appropriate clothing must also be worn under the smock. Knees and shoulders should be covered at all times. Interns are responsible for bringing their own work clothes (white coat, stethoscope, etc.) and for adhering to the dress code.

You should also have your résumé, a copy of your passport, a list of your preferred departments and documents relating to your previous qualifications with you.

Participants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.
