Project Physiotherapy Ghana

What's the matter?

Even in ancient times, certain movements, massages, heat treatments and baths were used to relieve pain. Today, physiotherapy is an indispensable medical healing method, also in Ghana. However, the standard in terms of hygiene and modernity is usually lower than in Europe. Get to know the physiotherapeutic work far away from your national borders! Gain hands-on experience in Accra and broaden your horizons.

During your internship abroad in Ghana, you will acquire valuable intercultural skills and improve your English skills through everyday use. You will also demonstrate your independence, which will benefit you in future applications, for example.

Your internship abroad in the field of physiotherapy

For whom is the physiotherapy internship in Ghana suitable?

Would you like to get a taste of the professional field of physiotherapy and have a very special experience abroad? Then an orientation internship in physiotherapy in Ghana is just right for you! You will first observe the specialists and will gradually be given smaller responsibilities. If you already have previous knowledge or have completed physiotherapy training, you can also complete a specialist internship.

Your place of work for the physiotherapy internship in Ghana

Your place of work is a therapy center in Accra, which follows a holistic approach. In addition to the use of western conventional medical physiotherapy, the mental state of those being treated is also taken into account. For example, advice on stress management is offered, as well as relaxation exercises such as Shiatsu or Tai Chi. Treatment methods from Asian medicine, such as acupuncture applications, are also used. There is also a SPA and wellness offer for patients.

In your internship you can expect varied tasks, depending on your previous knowledge and the needs of the patients. After you have gotten to know the working methods, you will take on supporting activities in the following areas, for example:

Measures to promote muscle growth and improve motor skills, remobilization training after nerve damage, rehabilitation exercises after sports injuries, massages and relaxation exercises as well as playful exercises with children.

Possibility to recognize a compulsory internship

If you would like to have your RGV internship abroad recognized as part of your studies or training, be sure to inquire in advance about the regulations of your university or your training company. In this case, please inform us in advance about the templates so that we can take them into account. After completing your RGV stay abroad, you will receive an internship/participation certificate from us.

Your daily work at the therapy center

During your physiotherapy internship in Ghana, you will work from Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 17:00 p.m. You can organize your working hours (maximum eight hours a day) freely and have a lunch break from 13:00 p.m. to 14:00 p.m.

Volunteer House

There is always a lot going on in our Volunteer House. You live in the house together with other volunteers, interns and our team leader William. In addition to six bedrooms, the volunteers have four toilets, three bathrooms and a fully equipped communal kitchen at their disposal. There is also a large living room with satellite TV. Our cook takes care of your physical well-being both in the morning and in the evening.

The spacious veranda of our student house invites you to relax. There you can compete with your roommates in a table tennis match, listen to music, read and exchange ideas. Or organize a games evening - there is a large selection of board games! William always organizes small social events for the residents of the house.

There is also a lot to discover around the Volunteer House, because it is close to the beautiful Coco Beach. After work, you can also take a relaxing stroll in a shopping mall not far away.

Experience the vibrant Ghanaian capital Accra in all its facets. Located directly on the coast of the Atlantic, the city invites you to stroll and discover. In Accra we offer various types of accommodation.

All of Accra has a very well developed mobile network with 3G data transfer for e-mail or Skype. Accommodation and meals (breakfast and dinner) are included in our services both in the volunteer house and in the host family.

On the weekends you can go on a variety of excursions and go on a discovery tour of Accra.

Host families in the Volta region

In a RGV homestay you dive delve deeper into Ghanaian culture than is the case, for example, in the Student House. The Ghanaians are so welcoming that they will quickly integrate you as a new family member. If you are not doing your project work, you can accompany your family's everyday life. Living with a host family allows you to learn more about the traditions of the locals, exchange ideas and learn the regional language Twi at the same time. Your host family will surely have one or two insider tips for you.

In Ghana it is not uncommon for the power to go out. You should be prepared for this and, like the Ghanaians, just take it easy. Otherwise, all of our host families have running water and electricity. Few host families have a washing machine; most families wash their laundry by hand. For a small fee you can also have your laundry dry cleaned.

At home with host mom Mama Mina

You can feel at home with our host mother, Mama Mina, who has been with RGV since it was founded in 1999. Mama Mina set up the location in Ghana together with RGV founder Steffen Mayer. For years she has been taking in volunteers and interns and taking care of their well-being. For example, you will be able to enjoy their cooking skills.

There's always something going on at Mama Mina's. This is primarily due to the fact that their site is a contact point for all street children. In addition, up to five other volunteers or interns can be accommodated with you in the house. There are several bedrooms and a bathroom. In the living room you can relax and chat with Mama Mina and her family. A large garden also belongs to the house. There is usually eaten together.

Enjoy the time with your host mother Mama Mina and go on tour through the metropolis of Accra together with other volunteers and interns in your free time! Let Mina give you tips on visiting the most beautiful corners worth seeing!

Location

Accra

Ghana se w Akwaaba! Welcome to Ghana! This culturally and scenically diverse country will immediately cast its spell on you. The Ghanaian way of life - the friendliness and open-mindedness of the locals - makes it easy for you to settle in quickly!

The bustling Ghanaian capital Accra, with around 2,3 million inhabitants, is located in the south of the country, directly on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. If you work in the metropolis, you can dive deep into the African urban jungle, but also get a taste of the coastal air.

In addition to traditional markets and a colorful variety of African delicacies, skyscrapers and modern shopping centers await you. Despite its size, the best way to explore the city is on foot. On the way through Accra you will always notice exciting contrasts. For example, the still existing castle from the early days of Accra, which today serves as the seat of government and is monitored in a state-of-the-art manner. Or the fishermen who continue to fish the sea the old-fashioned way and earn their living that way.

The capital may be climatically hot and initially overwhelm you with its crowded streets. But no matter whether you are in the center, in the west of the city or near the beach, Accra will convince you with culinary experiences and an excellent nightlife. So grab a few volunteers and go on a discovery tour together!

Your free time in Accra

After work and days off, you have enough time to relax and explore the area. Accra itself is a fascinating city and truly a place of contrasts. Modern shopping streets and skyscrapers meet traditional fishing settlements and old fortifications. Get acquainted with the diversity of the city on a walking tour, visit the mausoleum in Kwame Nkrumah Park and lose yourself in the hustle and bustle of the huge Makola market.

The imposing Christiansburg, also known as Osu Castle, awaits you on the coast. The former seat of government of Ghana is one of many European forts along the Gold Coast, reminiscent of a time when Ghana was a trading center for gold, ivory and slaves. Today the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For those interested in culture, a visit to the newly renovated National Museum and the cultural centers Alliance Francaise and Brazil House with their weekly evening program is always worthwhile.

If you ever get tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, we recommend a trip to one of the nearby beaches. Here you can relax between golden sands and palm trees during the day before heading out in the evening to be part of the lively nightlife.

But even further outside the city limits of Accra, Ghana still has a lot to offer that you should not miss. A special highlight is the Kakum National Park, where you have the opportunity to walk between the crowns of the jungle giants on a treetop path that is unique in Africa and marvel at the beauty of the rainforest from a height of up to 45 meters.
