Volunteering in the women empowerment project

What's the matter?

The role of women in India is strongly influenced by traditional culture, the colonial past and the political development after independence. Although the country has made progress, India as a whole remains a patriarchal society in which women are viewed as "dependent wives" or "earners" at best.

A woman's traditional family responsibilities, especially as a mother, wife and housewife, severely limit her career choices. The attitude of their family and society towards certain professions also has a negative impact. Girls from low-income families have a high dropout rate and few of them complete higher education.

The deployment site is an NGO. The project promotes awareness of women's rights, sensitizes girls about female hygiene issues and advocates for women's safety. The women receive training on various income options in order to become financially independent and they also receive English lessons.

The aim of this project is to strengthen women's self-confidence, improve their career prospects and generally strengthen the image of women in society. At the same time, basic skills and language skills are also promoted. The opportunity to exchange ideas with you as a volunteer also offers them a welcome change from their everyday lives.

Your tasks as a volunteer

You typically work Monday to Friday for 5-6 hours a day. As a volunteer, you are committed to strengthening the role of women in India. Your daily tasks could look like this:

  • You will work with girls aged 16 to 20 and give them English lessons to improve their language skills before entering professional life.
  • You support them in various professional courses such as cosmetics, sewing and crafts.
  • You will help local staff organize literacy courses for women.
  • You offer the women in the organization help and training in using computers.

You are welcome to bring your own materials to prepare your lessons. If you have any problems or questions, you can contact the team at any time and they will consult with you regularly.

To get to the projects, you can use Delhi's well-developed public transport system, such as auto-rickshaws or the Delhi Metro.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House Delhi

In your accommodation in Delhi you live with up to eleven other volunteers in a house. Up to four volunteers can be accommodated in one bedroom. These are separated by gender and furnished with bunk beds. Linens are provided for you.

The kitchen is fully equipped and the bathrooms are western-style with toilets and showers. The home also has free internet, a TV, and air conditioning.

Your accommodation will be cleaned and you will receive breakfast and dinner every day except Sunday. In your vicinity there are also many shopping facilities. For example, there are many markets nearby where you can get something to eat. But you can also do other everyday shopping here. There are also ATMs, cafes and restaurants.

You usually travel to work independently using public transport. The projects are all well connected to the public transport network. The best way to get to your place of work is by auto rickshaw, metro or Uber. Please note that the cost of public transport is not included. So plan around €15 per week for this.

Location

Delhi.

Delhi is the major metropolis in northern India and also the country's “National Capital Territory” as the territory includes the capital New Delhi. After Mumbai (Bombay), Delhi is the second largest city in India with around 22.000.000 inhabitants.

Due to the thousand-year history of the metropolis, the cityscape is also very diverse. In addition to numerous bazaars, magnificent temples and mosques, there are also impressive buildings from the Mughal era. In Old Delhi you can stroll through narrow streets and through the markets. In New Delhi, on the other hand, you will find large government buildings, avenues and beautiful gardens.

So if you would like to immerse yourself in the life and hustle and bustle of a diverse city, Delhi is ideal for you! Here you will get to know India and its people in all their diversity without having to forego the comforts of a city. You can also learn a lot about the history, the living environment and various customs here.

Free time in Delhi

Your free time in Delhi

Your accommodation and locations are located in the south of the metropolis Delhi. There are numerous markets where you can get great food and shop for your daily needs. You can also buy clothes and souvenirs at markets nearby.

India's capital is divided into Old Delhi, which was the capital of India's Mughal Empire until 1857, and New Delhi, the district that grew up around the old city. In Old Delhi you can stroll through the winding little streets of Chandni Chowk through the bazaar district. You will meet the Red Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Friday Mosque and Delhi's most important memorial, which was built in honor of Gandhi: Raj Ghat. New Delhi is no less remarkable. Here you can expect impressive government buildings, beautiful gardens and avenues as well as some monuments worth seeing, such as the soldiers' monument India Gate and Qutab Minar, India's largest minaret.

But you can also discover a lot outside of the capital. Our on-site team regularly organizes tours to the most important sights in the region. How about a trip to Agra and Jaipur, for example? Together with Delhi, the two cities form the so-called Golden Triangle. The world-famous Taj Mahal is in Agra. The mausoleum was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as an expression of his love for his late wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Red Fort in Agra and the Friday and Pearl Mosques are also worth a visit.

Many visitors are drawn to Jaipur because of the pink old town. That is why the city is also known as the “Pink City”. Attractions such as the Galta Ji Temple with its monkeys, Jantar Mantar, the world's largest observatory and Hawa Mahal, the city's landmark with its around 1000 picturesque niches and windows round off your visit to Jaipur.

North of Delhi lies Rishikesh. On the banks of the Ganges and at the foot of the huge Himalayan mountains you will find one thing above all here: temple complexes and meditation centers. Therefore, the relatively small city is considered the capital of yoga. Rishikesh became famous when the Beatles retreated to the Maharishi Mahesh Yoga Ashram to meditate in the 1960s. Do the same for them!

RGV FAQ
to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for India?

To enter the country you must apply for a tourist visa in advance.
The one-year ETA (One year e-Tourist Visa), which is valid for 365 days from the date of issue, is particularly practical. However, you can stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days at a time. For longer stays, a short stay in Nepal or Sri Lanka is recommended so that you can then enter the country again for 90 days.

The application must be submitted at least four days before entering India. The cost is around €40-80.

What language skills do I need for the project?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have good English skills.

What are the requirements for the project?

For the Women Empowerment Project in Delhi, you should be open and flexible as the tasks and responsibilities in this project may vary. You need good English skills and must present a police clearance certificate.

What do I have to bring?

Dress Code: While volunteering in the project, women must adhere to a conservative dress code. Knees and shoulders should be covered. Tight-fitting and revealing clothing is not desired as the project takes place in poorer neighborhoods where people are often conservative.

Female volunteers can also purchase Indian clothes like salwar kameez from the local market as they are very comfortable to wear. The clothes will certainly make it easier for you to immerse yourself in the local culture.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.

What else is there to consider?

Please note that this project always ends on Saturdays. You can book additional overnight stays for a fee.
