Volunteering in Women Empowerment in Uganda

What's the matter?

Girls and women often don't have it easy in Uganda. More than 23% of girls are married while still under age and also start having children very early. As a result, Uganda has a very young population - about half are under 15 years old.

Early marriages and unwanted pregnancies put the girls in a very difficult situation. One in six girls has to give up their education due to pregnancy. This also jeopardizes the long-term supply of the family. The girls usually know little about the various effects of pregnancy. Contraception, family planning and the dangers of communicable diseases are also hardly talked about in Uganda. The lack of self-determination and privacy as well as health centers that are too far away make the situation even more difficult.

However, the teams at our two deployment sites are highly motivated to change this situation for the better. The environment should be made more girl-friendly and advice and help should be made accessible. Support the teams of the institutions in their valuable work!

We work locally with two non-profit organizations. Both are committed to improving the quality of life of girls and women in Uganda.

The first NPO is primarily involved in training, targeted mobilization and educational work on the topics of equality, women's health and contraception. The approximately 15 employees are supported by more than 300 Ugandan volunteers. The second NPO is primarily involved in education and aims to improve educational opportunities for girls and women. Minorities and members of the community who suffer from exclusion – for example people infected with HIV and people suffering from AIDS – are also deliberately addressed.

The committed people are looking forward to your helping hands and ideas to achieve a more youth and women-friendly environment!

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer in the educational project, you can get involved in a variety of work areas. The educational work in schools, community and health centers is a central task. It is about providing information on the topics of pregnancy, health and family planning. You can also help found health clubs in schools and support students in their activities.

With the appropriate prior knowledge, you can also help put together and disseminate gender training toolkits. You can assist in community outreach and raise awareness of the challenges girls and women in Uganda face. Topics can be HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, domestic violence, early motherhood and feminine hygiene during the period. You can also get involved in the organizational area by helping with fundraising, co-maintaining the website, (co-)creating newsletters and helping to publish an info magazine.

As a volunteer in the education sector, you will get involved in various training programs for women, young people and children. For example in wine production, tailor training or in the production of handicrafts. A school for the girls is financed with the proceeds of the goods. At school you mainly support in English lessons. There are hardly any teaching materials, which is why the teaching staff on site is very grateful for your ideas and impulses. New and alternative teaching methods are warmly welcomed.

With the appropriate previous knowledge, you can also get involved in art and music lessons. There is also a soccer team that is happy to have a motivated soccer coach.

Your daily routine on site depends on your chosen field of activity. At the beginning of your project work, a work plan will be drawn up together with you. You will typically work from 8am to 17pm (educational sector) or from 9am to 16:30pm, 5 days a week. During your lunch break you will be provided with a warm meal, which you can eat together with your colleagues.

School visits and all activities outside the office are done in teams. Even then your lunch will be provided.

Host family in Uganda

In Kampala, the metropolis and capital of Uganda, you are right in the middle of the exciting events! There is everything you need in the vicinity of your host family: In the center you will find shopping malls, supermarkets and other small shops where you can run errands.

For most of our projects you will stay with Joseph, his wife and their children. Up to six volunteers can be accommodated in their home. There is a guest room at Joseph's in the house and two more in the annex. You can use the living room to spend time together. Both in the main house and in the annex there is a bathroom with a latrine. For showering or washing you use water from canisters. You can have your laundry washed on site for a small fee. You will be immersed in a typical Ugandan way of life with Joseph!

Joseph even built a great new guest cottage for his volunteers with two extra bedrooms and a living area where you can retreat - awesome right? In your free time, you can easily go to Kampala City by public transport! Enjoy your time in Kampala and visit fabulous weekly markets or try the traditional cuisine of the "Pearl of Africa".

Location

Greater Kampala region

The metropolis and capital Kampala is located in southern Uganda. Here you will find small busy streets, modern skyscrapers, restaurants and a lively nightlife. So there is a lot to discover!

With a bit of luck you can even see marabou storks hatching their young in the middle of the city center, near the rugby court! Trees and hills adorn the cityscape around the center. The streets are full of so-called boda-bodas - these are bicycle taxis, which most people in Uganda use to get around.

But not only the capital has a lot to offer: the further you drive out of Kampala, the more adventure awaits you during your trip. Kampala is considered Uganda's transport hub, which is why all our projects are located in the greater Kampala area. The capital is also not far from Africa's most famous freshwater lake, "Lake Victoria".

So you've come to the right place if you want to experience Uganda intensively - both life in the metropolis and the landscapes in the surrounding area!

Your free time in the greater Kampala region

Welcome to the Greater Kampala Region! The capital of Uganda is the best place to learn about the country's rich history and culture. For example, you will find the "Uganda Museum" here, which is one of the best museums in Africa with its large collection of cultural and historical treasures. In addition, numerous churches, mosques and other places of worship bear witness to the great heterogeneity and diversity of the country.

Away from the culture you will find many markets, restaurants and bars in the lively city as well as a nightlife that can easily keep up with the European metropolises. Kampala is also a real institution when it comes to street food. “Luwombo”, an elaborate cooking dish that is prepared and served in a banana leaf, is particularly popular.

Do you need a short break from the chaotic city life? Then explore the outskirts of Kampala. Lake Victoria is only a few kilometers away. The coasts and numerous small islands that you will find on Africa's largest lake are definitely worth a visit. And the rest of Uganda is chock-full of must-see attractions if you find the time.

The waterfalls of the Murchison Falls National Park or the Ruwenzori Mountains with peaks over 5000 meters are definitely among them. You should also not miss a tour to see the rare mountain gorillas. Because: The last specimens live exclusively in Uganda and the neighboring countries.

For more (insider) tips, you can also get in touch with your local contact at any time.

RGV FAQ
to the project

How far in advance do I have to register?

Ideally your registration takes place at least 3-6 months before the desired departure date, But also short-term registrations are up 1-2 months before the planned departure is possible.

But it could be that your dream project is already booked. In this case we will try together to find a suitable alternative for you.

Can I travel with a friend or in a group?

Yes! On request we enable a double room if you for two with a friend or a friend, or an apartment or other suitable accommodation for groups.

We are very happy to enable our participants to go on a project and share accommodation with friends. Shared accommodation is usually possible both in the volunteer house and with the host family, although the room in the volunteer house may also be shared with other participants. In some locations there is also the option of sharing an apartment.

When registering, please always mention the person(s) traveling with you!

Can I combine projects?

Yes! You can combine projects at one location, at different locations, but also in different countries. It is also possible to combine a project with a trip. You can specify your desired combination directly when registering.

Combination options at a glance:

  1. Combine programs in one country
  2. Combine programs across countries
  3. Combine a program with a language course
  4. Combine a program with ours Adventure & Trips

There are a few things Project combinations to note: The minimum length of stay per project must be observed and you may incur additional costs for country combinations, for example for an intermediate flight.
