Internship abroad

If you Medical student and would like to take the opportunity to spend your internship abroad, then we look forward to facilitating your medical internship in Africa, Asia, Latin America or Europe!

Important: Find out in advance about the conditions of your college or university

Before you start planning and organizing your traineeship abroad, we would like to recommend that you obtain comprehensive information on the individual requirements of your college or university. This is the only way we can jointly create the best conditions for the recognition of your internship in one of our target countries.

Medical internship abroad

The requirements are very different

Ultimately, a person in the examination office at your university decides on the recognition of your clerkship. This is a rough framework, but it can differ from training institution to training institution.

However, the following can be said in advance in general:

For medical students from Germany, the traineeship must last a total of four months. You will spend at least two months in a hospital (usually a certain minimum number of beds is required), one month in outpatient care (e.g. health or community center, dispensary) and 1 month in a general practitioner care facility.

For medical students from Austria, the traineeship must last at least twelve weeks. You should usually complete four weeks of this in internal medicine, four weeks in general medicine and/or primary care (emergency room, trauma surgery). You are often free to choose another four weeks.

For medical students from Switzerland, the traineeship should usually last nine to ten months, which can be completed in different departments of a hospital.

What are the tasks of a traineeship abroad?

The tasks and the scope of your activities in one of our assignments abroad can vary greatly. These depend on the size of the institution, the prevailing standards in the country and your individual skills. It may well be the case that trainees are allowed to carry out more demanding activities. However, this is ultimately decided by the hospital where you work or the medical specialist responsible for you. Your possible uses depend entirely on the decision-makers on site. We at RGV have no direct influence on this.

According to the personal assessment of the on-site specialists, you are most likely to be able to actively participate in patient admissions (anamnesis and physical examination), assist with minor operations and examinations, take blood and help evaluate findings.

RGV countries and locations that are particularly suitable for an internship

Basically, one can say that an internship abroad is possible in most of our target countries. However, the conditions for practical work vary. In the following list you can see which type of institutions we cooperate with at which locations:

Hospitals with more than 40 patient beds:

Clinics, Community Centers, Dispensaries with 10 to 40 beds:

Day clinics, ambulances:

Retirement homes and nursing homes for seniors:

Inform yourself and let us advise you!

In order to ensure the best possible conditions for the recognition of your internship abroad, please find out more from your training company or your university (minimum number of beds? Specific department? Requirements regarding your contact person?) and pass this key data on to us. In this way we can allocate you a suitable placement. However, whether your clerkship is ultimately recognized does not depend on the RGV, but on your examination office.
