What's the matter?

Bottlenose dolphin is a common species of dolphin in all oceans. You may know him from the series Pinball, which has made this species of dolphin very well known. Like many other animals, this species is now threatened with extinction. The reason for this is the deterioration of living conditions, for which man is largely responsible. Until the last hundred years, the Adriatic Sea was shaped by natural laws and its health depended on the balance between natural forces and all the systems that live in it. For quite a while now, the sea has had a new force to reckon with: humans.

The organization was founded in June 2001 with the aim of researching and protecting the bottlenose dolphins of the Adriatic Sea. The research activities started in cooperation with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History and students from the University of Bologna and universities in the UK. The work has brought beautiful experiences along with continuous adjustments to ensure volunteers' well-being and smooth operations. The research base is located in a small fishing village.

Observing and researching the dolphins and collecting this data is one of your main tasks here. Likewise the sensitization of the population. The residents of the region should become aware of the wonderful, intelligent and, above all, protected creatures that live in their waters and how important their existence is for the entire marine ecosystem. The Adriatic Sea is home to a wide variety of marine life including microorganisms, fish, sharks, sea turtles, plants and algae. Every single living being plays an important role in the functioning of the ecosystem. All components of the ecosystem are interdependent. Ultimately, the human being from the sea - and that's why the whole thing is so important.

Your tasks as a volunteer

After a simple breakfast (muesli, bread with spreads, tea, coffee) there follows a briefing with your daily tasks. In the morning, the data from the previous day is analyzed and new dolphin data is entered into the data acquisition system. The annotations during the observations are transcribed and stored in further data collections. This way you will learn the first steps of actual research. You don't have to be an expert in the field, by the way. The most important thing is that you bring passion and enthusiasm and of course an interest in animal welfare.

On some mornings there will be presentations from your assignment site and on some evenings you can watch documentaries on the subject of the sea and underwater worlds with the other participants. At noon you prepare your meal together. The assigned persons receive a recipe and off we go! Before you go outside again, you pack fruit and drinks with you so that you are well taken care of on board.

Bottlenose dolphins are observed either from a boat or from a platform on land. It starts in the afternoon and you stay out as long as you can - sometimes until 20:30 p.m. You collect data and write everything down and learn, among other things, how to distinguish the dolphins from each other and how to track population dynamics. You will receive instructions for this from the team leader.

If the weather throws a spanner in the works and you can't go out to do your research, you can go swimming and snorkeling in the safe and warm waters and observe a fascinating and interesting underwater world.

To help educate the public, you will learn how to create a simple presentation about dolphin biology. In terms of content, this is about explaining why dolphins are threatened and why it is important for the entire Adriatic to protect them. You also practice how to present it to tourists. Not only will you be doing great educational work, but speaking in front of people will boost your confidence and advance you in your professional life.

Filled up with new, life-enriching experiences and the sound of the sea still in your ears, you can look forward to dinner. Since experience has shown that the wishes are very different here, your dinner is self-catering. There is a small shop very close by and there is also the option of driving twice per stay to a larger supermarket in a nearby town.

Please note: Before your first day in the project, you must show a negative corona test result. A quick test is sufficient in this case.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer apartment in Croatia

You share a four-bed room with three other volunteers, which you keep clean together. You bring your own bedding. A kitchen is available in the apartment. You have WiFi in the research base. On the days of departure, the volunteers are asked to clean the dormitories thoroughly and to help with cleaning and tidying up the entire apartment.

There is a small supermarket XNUMX minutes from the research base, where you can also buy English and German newspapers. There is an open marketplace right next to the supermarket where fresh seasonal fruit and pastries are on sale in the summer. There are also more shops in the vicinity where you can buy everyday items.

During your stay you will enjoy healthy and tasty Mediterranean dishes and also learn how to cook them yourself (if you feel like it). On the excursions you can taste Istrian olives and truffles and get inspiration to take home.

Location

Croatian Adriatic

The project site is in a village, right by the sea. Live your everyday life here a little slower while listening to the sound of the sea and the chirping of the cicadas. You can stroll around the open market square and buy fresh seasonal fruit or pastries.

A beautiful view of the sea with crystal clear water awaits you on the Croatian Adriatic coast. Green pine forests and the karst mountains also adorn the landscape in the background. But Croatia is not only beautiful on the coast - the country also has many national parks to offer, with waterfalls, mountains and gorges.

Would you like to get to know this little place by the sea? Are you interested in marine conservation and dolphins and want to learn more about them? Then we warmly welcome you to our project location in Croatia!

Free time on the Croatian Adriatic

Your free time on the Croatian Adriatic

As a volunteer on the Croatian Adriatic, the entire coast is available to you for a wide range of leisure activities after work and on your days off.

On the beaches you can have a really good time, relax and swim. If you prefer to be active, then go snorkeling, diving, sailing or SUP. You can also work out by riding a bike. There are numerous cycle paths in the area around your project location and there is even an organized cycle tour planned for one day. You drive from Zambratija towards Slovenia and have a wonderful view of the Alps from one of the points.

There are numerous small fishing villages and towns along the coast that you can visit. Rovinj, Porec, Pula and Umag, for example, are recommended.
Pula enchants with buildings from Roman, Venetian and Byzantine times. The triumphal arch, the Augustus temple and the castle are particularly reminiscent of times gone by. The most impressive is probably the old amphitheater, also known as the Pula Arena. But the city also inspires with its modern architecture. In the Uljanik shipyard you can admire the light show of the luminous giants in the evening. The cranes light up in different colors and radiate a special flair.

Also in Umag there are some interesting buildings from the old days. There you can admire the city walls with its partially preserved city gate and drawbridge from the tenth century, visit a museum displaying ancient vessels and crafts or visit the Church of Saint Roch with its beautiful painted ceiling from the 16th century.

Other places worth seeing are, for example, the oldest lighthouse on the Adriatic in Savudrija and all national parks, such as the Brijuni National Park, Kamenjak National Park or the Plitvice Lakes, which were also the location of the Winnetou films.
