Ecological house building

What's the matter?

The organization focuses on turtle conservation, organic farming and sustainable construction. A particular focus of her work is the promotion of organic farming and sustainable house building in rural areas. Only ecological fertilizers in agriculture and natural materials are used in construction.

In Tanzania, the housing and construction situation is particularly problematic in the poorer areas, because the materials for constructing new buildings are often too expensive. In order to be able to build new houses anyway, the organization uses locally available and sustainable materials such as stones, wood, bamboo or shells.

At the same time, an equally important part of her work is to give people a better understanding of marine ecosystems, so they understand how our everyday lives and bad habits negatively impact the marine environment and its survival. The global population of sea turtles is considered endangered or even threatened with extinction and must be protected in a targeted manner. The on-site turtle sanctuary is intended to be home to many of these animals, who of course need daily care. The help of active volunteers is very welcome.

A goal of the project is to protect the turtles, which are endangered in the area, and to give people a better understanding of the ecosystems.

This project is also about introducing and promoting organic farming in rural areas and helping to implement sustainable construction projects. From houses to building a school building for Mjimwema Primary School, you'll help out and learn how to build with natural materials too. In addition, an intercultural and technical exchange should be encouraged.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your tasks during your volunteer work in the environmental and turtle project in Tanzania are very diverse. On the one hand, you take part in basic activities to care for the turtles and thus contribute to their protection. This includes feeding the animals and cleaning the enclosures. On the other hand, you support local sustainable construction projects and ecological cultivation in agriculture.

We are currently expecting the first turtle eggs to hatch from March 2024. Before that, it is possible that sick or injured animals will arrive at the sanctuary, which will then be cared for.

In summary, your tasks include:

  • Caring for the turtles (if any)
  • Introduction and promotion of organic farming in rural areas
  • Assisting in sustainable construction projects, including the construction of a school building on site

You work five days a week. The following schedule gives you a rough idea of how your work week will be divided up, but it can change depending on the phase of the project.

Basically, one of your daily tasks is to help take care of the turtles. You will support the team with basic activities in the sanctuary.

Two days a week you will help with sustainable construction projects in Mjimwema. In order to get to Mjimwema, the volunteers have to take the ferry in the morning.

Two days are set aside for activities near the beach on the peninsula. Your tasks here are varied, you will be active in both sustainable construction and ecological cultivation in the landscape. You will learn how to work exclusively with natural materials.

Excursions to more rural areas are scheduled for one day per week. Since the excursions start in Mbae, the volunteers have to come back to the site by ferry and motorcycle taxi in the morning to take part in the excursions.

Location

Msangamkuu in Tanzania

Mtwara Msangamkuu Peninsula

Tanzania is located in East Africa, south of the equator and is best known for its diverse landscapes and natural wealth. Particularly well-known are the Serengeti National Park, where you can marvel at the so-called “Big Five” of African wildlife, the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro with its ever-white peak and the tropical islands on the coast.

The country's wealth of languages is just as diverse as its nature. Up to 125 languages are said to be spoken here today. This diversity is partly due to the fact that Tanzania has always been influenced by many cultures due to its historical function as an important trading hub. In addition to European influences, Arabic and Indian influences are also very evident.

In the southeast of the country, on the Msangamkuu Peninsula near the town of Mtwara, our project site is in close proximity to the beach and the Indian Ocean. So if you love sun, sand and the sea and its inhabitants, this location is perfect for you!

Leisure time in Tanzania

Your free time in Msangamkuu

Tanzania has a lot to offer as a travel destination that should not be missed. After work and on days off, you have enough time to relax and explore the area. The location of the project site right by the sea naturally invites you to spend your free time on the beach or in the water. Grab other volunteers to explore the surrounding beaches on foot, snorkel or kayak! Alternatively, you also have the option of booking a sailing boat tour.

If you feel like culture, it is worth taking a trip to the historic town of Mikindani, which you can reach in just under an hour by ferry and bus. The historic city has been under Arabic, Portuguese, German and English rule over the past few centuries, which has given it a lasting multicultural character. Take your time to understand the different influences as you familiarize yourself with the city's eclectic cuisine and architecture.

Of course, this is only a fraction of what Tanzania has to offer in terms of attractions! Use your time and go on safari in one of the legendary national parks to look out for lions, elephants and rhinos, set out to climb the volcanic Kilimanjaro massif or visit the infamous spice island of Zanzibar with its dream beaches and coral reefs.
