What's the matter?

Our riding school for people with disabilities is located in Cape Town, very close to the impressive Table Mountain. The committed team on site has specialized in therapeutic horseback riding. More than 160 children from various special schools and other people with disabilities benefit from the non-profit organization's free riding lessons.

Regardless of the type of disability, riding has been proven to promote the health, general well-being and social behavior of the riders. Whether it's leading a child's horse or accompanying the child in their experience, at the Cape Town Horse Farm you'll have a meaningful role to play and help make the project a reality!

The site has existed since the 1970s. Since then, she has been pursuing the goal of giving people with disabilities access to therapeutic measures with horses. Through the riding lessons, the participants demonstrably gain more self-confidence, so that over time they even get involved in competitions with friends on an equal footing and generally have more confidence.

The facility has an outdoor and indoor riding area. There is also a clubhouse with a kitchen and sanitary facilities. The facility is very well equipped, with everything a horse-loving heart desires (riding equipment, saddles, etc.). In order to realize the riding lessons, three volunteers are required per riding student. In addition to horse leaders, an accompanying volunteer must accompany each horse to provide security. That's why there's always a need for volunteers like you!

Your tasks as a volunteer

Keeping horses is a full-time job, so you won't get bored at Cape Town Horse Farm. You care for, feed and water the horses. You prepare them for the riding lessons with the children and adults, take them to the riding arena and back again. You will also encourage the children and help make the riding lessons an enriching experience for everyone involved.

In addition, you take the horses out to pasture and help with the maintenance and cleaning of the stables. Together with other volunteers, you wash the water troughs for the horses and take care of the riding and horse utensils (curry combs, saddles, brushes, etc.). The helmets, riding boots and equipment of the riders must also be cared for and cleaned up after the lesson.

You also check the pasture fences, repair them together with the team members and make sure that there are no dangerous objects on the pasture for the horses. If you are interested in public relations or fundraising, you are welcome to get involved in these areas as well!

At the horse farm in Cape Town you will usually work from Monday to Friday. From around 8:30 a.m. to 17:30 p.m. you will take care of the well-being of the horses and support the people with disabilities taking part in riding lessons. You spend your mornings cleaning the stables and caring for the horses. In coordination with the responsible grooms, you prepare the horses for the first riding lesson of the day.

You support the riding instructors during the morning riding lessons at 9:30 a.m. At 14 p.m. you have lunch break. After your lunch break you dedicate yourself again to the care of the horses, for which you bring them back to the stables. You will then assist with the afternoon riding lessons and help with the evening feeding.

Cabins in the horse therapy project

During your volunteer work in the horse therapy project, you will live in "cabins" directly at the project site. These are made of wood and each have a small kitchen and a bathroom with sink, shower and toilet. There is also space for a sofa and a table. There is a fan for summer and heating for winter. Usually you share a cabin with another volunteer.

There is no food on site, but once a week you can drive to a supermarket with the team and get everything you need there.

Location

Cape Town West

Cape Town - a city in which several worlds are united: big city, sea and wilderness in the immediate vicinity. During your stay you can not only go swimming, but also enjoy the South African flair while shopping or in a café and explore the fascinating nature.

With over four million inhabitants, Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa. Because the city has played a crucial role in the country's history in many ways, it is affectionately known as the "mother of all cities". The famous "Cape of Good Hope", where the first daring sailors docked at the time of the European explorers, is located in the Table Mountain National Park.

Due to its location, directly on Table Bay of the Atlantic Ocean, you have a breathtaking panorama view from almost everywhere. Dare the challenge and let yourself be enchanted by this beauty!

Cape Town is inhabited by people from many different ethnic groups, which is also reflected in the cityscape. Convince yourself of the colorful houses of Bo-Kaaps, the impressive street art in the alleys or the ever-present Afro-Chic. Cape Town is multicultural and proudly displays every facet of the local population.

Penguins on Boulder Beach in Cape Town

Your free time in Cape Town West

On your days off, you have the opportunity to explore the sprawling metropolis together with the other volunteers, where countless activities await you!

Enjoy the city's urban vibes, visit the hip cafes and sample local delicacies at one of the many markets. There is also no lack of historical sites in Cape Town: Visit, for example, Robben Island, a former prison island, which is about twelve kilometers from Cape Town, or one of the many museums, such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.

If you want to clear your head, you can relax on the many beautiful beaches or throw yourself into the waves with your surfboard. The extensive beach of Camps Bay, for example, is very well known, with its promenade lined with restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Let yourself be infected by the relaxed beach vibe of Cape Town!

Would you rather be active in sports? Then climb Table Mountain, the symbol of Cape Town, where you can enjoy breathtaking views over the city. The Lion's Head is also definitely worth a hike - but you have to be in good physical condition here, as it gets a bit more strenuous from half the way up.

If you have a little more time, you should definitely take a trip to the Cape of Good Hope, discover one of the many national parks nearby or take a tour along the famous Garden Route, which takes you past beautiful landscapes and enchanting sandy beaches. Or you can visit Boulders Beach on the Cape Peninsula south of Cape Town, where you can watch the many cute African penguins that cavort here right on the beach.

You can experience all this and much more while volunteering in Cape Town West. Jump into the adventure! What are you waiting for?
