Equine therapy in Peru

What's the matter?

In the facility for riding therapy, children, young people and adults can learn behaviors that improve their quality of life through very different challenges. This includes people with intellectual disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, low self-esteem, aggression disorders, depression or eating disorders. Working with the animals enables them to develop a responsible and sensitive awareness, acquire new skills and thereby also improve their own situation. The therapies include various exercises to improve coordination and to get used to the animals in order to build a trusting relationship with them.

Requirements:

  • Riding Ability – In order to participate in the project, you must be able to ride a horse
Note: It is necessary that the participants send us a short video so that we can see how good the riding skills are.
  • Knowledge of Spanish – In order to be able to communicate with the patients and the teams, basic skills in Spanish are required. A Spanish course is possible on site.

Your internship abroad on the horse farm

Areas

On the farm you support the teams in the different classes. Some of the patients need support from several people at the same time. You are the contact person for the children and help the team to prepare the materials and exercises for the therapies. You will also accompany the work with the horses and help the children to get used to the animal and to enjoy the experience. You take care of the horses, saddle them and feed them. You also support them in getting used to the therapies.

working hours

Since the therapies often take place at the weekend, you will also help out on Saturdays and Sundays. The work is Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 15 p.m. You are free on Mondays and Tuesdays. By prior arrangement, you can also arrange additional days off, for example to have more time to travel.

Location

Lima in Peru

Lima

As the capital of Peru, Lima is the political, cultural and economic center of the country. With over 8,5 million inhabitants, it is also by far the largest city - almost a third of Peru's total population lives here!

In Lima, life pulsates with an exciting mix of new and old. Historic cathedrals and colonial buildings in the city center meet modern skyscrapers and museums. As the foggiest city on the Pacific coast, the climate is mild all year round: in summer (December to April) it reaches 30 degrees here. During the winter (June to September) the thermometer does not drop below 12 degrees. Despite the humidity, Lima has hardly any precipitation.

Lima is a perfect destination for both city explorers and beach lovers. You can also improve your Spanish here and use it straight away!

Free time in Lima

Your free time in Lima

Lima is not only the capital of Peru, but also the largest city in the country. It is therefore not surprising that the city has a lot to offer. Lima is an important economic and cultural center with numerous universities, colleges, interesting museums, galleries and monuments. Discover magnificent churches and theaters or excellent restaurants and great shopping opportunities.

On the traces of the colonial era, you can spend your free time in a variety of ways and learn a lot in the process. Incidentally, this is where the well-preserved city center of Lima comes from. The old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991.

In your free time, you can also relax in the many parks in Lima. The best known is the University Park (Parque Universitario), but you can also unwind in the Miraflores district. Miraflores is particularly worth seeing for the numerous parks dotted with flowers. But you should definitely visit the beaches along the coast of Lima. You will find countless surfers on these in summer. Also of interest is the 263 hectare water reserve in the south of Lima, which is perfect for bird watching.

If you have a little more time, you can also take a trip to the nearby town of Callao, which is 15 kilometers northeast of Lima. Here is the port and a naval base. It is also worthwhile to explore the headland of La Punta there. From here you can take harbor tours or a boat trip to the offshore island of Palomino.

In your free time, you can of course try out the country's culinary specialties, which often, but not exclusively, contain fish. Just try delicious local snacks on your city walk or have a traditional dish conjured up in one of the many excellent restaurants.

Of course, these are by no means all the leisure activities that the city of Lima has to offer. Surely you will discover a lot of other highlights of the capital of Peru in your free time and experience some adventures!

RGV FAQ
to the project

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

What visa do I need for Peru?

You do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days per half year. If you are staying longer than 90 days, you will need proof upon entry that you are leaving the country before the 90 days are up. A bus ticket to a neighboring country is ideal for this. You have the option to request an extension of up to 183 days. The issue is then carried out on site at the migration authority.

General guidelines can be found on the website of the Foreign Office.

What language skills do I need for the project?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team on site, you should definitely have good English skills.
