What's the matter?

In Nepal, the healthcare system is severely underfunded, which is why there are too few hospitals and specialists across the population. The insurance system in Nepal is also not particularly well developed. Therefore, the patients usually have to bear the high treatment costs themselves. For this reason, it is mainly the wealthier sections of the population that benefit from Nepal's health system, as they can afford the costs of treatment more easily.

Through your involvement in this project, you support the medical staff in Nepal and make an important contribution to improving the health system.

Your place of work is a hospital in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. You can take a bus from your accommodation, which will take you to your assignment site in 30 minutes, but the best way to get to the hospital is on foot in 20-30 minutes.

Overall, the medical standard in Nepal is much lower than in Germany. This means difficult conditions for the medical staff and the patients and will also be a bit challenging for you at first. It will take you a while to get used to the different conditions. At the same time, you will learn a lot through your commitment and gain many exciting new experiences.

Your tasks as a volunteer

In the hospital, you accompany the medical staff and assist them with various tasks. Depending on your level of knowledge and your previous experience in the medical field, you will be responsible for various tasks. During your time as a volunteer, a doctor will be assigned to you as a mentor and will serve as your contact person. Feel free to ask him/her and your team members questions to learn more about everyday work and treatment methods in Nepal.

Important: The majority of the patients and some of the nursing staff do not speak English. It is therefore mandatory to complete a Nepalese language course.

Flexibility should be one of your strengths, as everyday life in Nepal can be much more unstructured than you may be used to. Short-term plan changes and failures should not upset you. In addition, you are interested in human medicine and able to work in a team.

Location

Kathmandu,

The capital of Nepal offers a colorful program with a lot of variety for everyone who visits the big city! Located in the center of the country, Kathmandu has been described in mystical Hindu and Buddhist legends dating back thousands of years.

However, the capital is not only a cultural center, but also a political one: embassies of many countries and organizations for development aid are based in Kathmandu. The cityscape is characterized by tall buildings in a metropolitan style. The traditional old town, on the other hand, is peppered with Hindu temples and other religious buildings. You will also find many traditional shops with numerous spices, carvings and fabrics in the dreamy alleys of the old town!

Kathmandu was already an integral part of the so-called "hippie trails" in the 70s. These are the cities of the world that were predominantly on the itineraries of hippies - the original model of backpackers as we know them today. If you want to experience colorful lights, historic temples and the breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas and immerse yourself completely in this fascinating world, Kathmandu is the place for you!

Free time in Kathmandu

Your free time in Kathmandu

Your stay in Kathmandu offers you plenty of opportunities to spend your free time around the project work. Take part in trekking tours and safaris through the Nepalese jungle with the other volunteers, find peace in the Garden of Dreams or discover the city with its countless Hindu temples together.

In the immediate vicinity of your accommodation is the tourist center of Kathmandu: the district of Thamel. On the way there you will pass a variety of restaurants and bars that invite you to linger and meet people from all over the world. This is not least because Kathmandu has been a popular travel destination for hippies since the 70s.

As you roam the streets of Kathmandu, you will notice the varied cityscape: tall houses blend into the traditional old town with Hindu temples, dreamy alleys and small shops with spices, carvings and fabrics.

A must-do in Kathmandu is a visit to Durbar Square. In any case, plan a little more time, because in addition to the impressive royal palace, more than 50 pagodas, stupas, temples and palaces await you, all of which you can admire. This place has rightly been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

There is also a Durbar Square in the nearby town of Lalitpur, the City of Beauty. In addition to a beautiful golden temple, it is one of the main attractions of the Buddhist city.

Important stupas, Buddhist buildings, are in Bodnath and in Swayambhunath. The suburb of Bodnath is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Himalayan region, visited by thousands of visitors every day. The Swayambhunath temple complex is known as one of the oldest temple complexes in the world and is also called "monkey temple" because of the many monkeys that roam the site.

If you need more inspiration for your free time, just ask Sher and Shiri. They will be happy to help you plan day and weekend trips and are always at your side with advice and action.
