Medicine project for volunteers in the Dominican Republic

What's the matter?

During your work in the medical project you will gain valuable practical experience by working side by side with medical staff and other volunteers either in a hospital or a health center nearby. During your assignment you will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the operation and daily routine of a hospital or clinic. You will also experience the stark contrast between Western medicine and medical practice in developing countries.

Since many hospitals and clinics are still in the modernization phase, there are many challenges to be overcome. For example, you will be confronted with untreated diseases that have now developed into an advanced stage of the disease.

All in all, the project not only offers a high degree of personal responsibility, you will also significantly expand your perspectives and your own horizons through your work in a developing country.

In addition, you have the opportunity to support in various specialist areas: e.g. in the emergency room, pediatrics, maternity ward (female volunteers only), diabetes, holistic care and prevention of HIV patients, tuberculosis, uterine cancer, nursing, hospital administration and management and support in treatments. Your help is also very welcome in the hospital pharmacy.

Your tasks as a volunteer

When you work in a medical project, your tasks are quite variable and you will be assigned according to your own interests and the current needs of the hospital or clinic. Before you start your volunteer work, a work plan will be drawn up together with you and your guidance.

Regardless of the departments in which you will ultimately be deployed, your tasks as a volunteer include the following activities:

  • Observing and assisting the doctors and nurses
  • Help with patient care: take care of the patients and assist with examinations
  • If necessary, support in the outpatient department
  • Writing down a medication list for patients
  • Swabs for disinfection
  • Folding and wrapping compresses
  • Prepare and, if necessary, distribute medication (infusions, tablets, ...)
  • Educational and promotional measures for prevention and control examinations
  • Development of educational materials and strategies as part of various prevention programs
  • Regular support with hospital administration tasks and help with improving work processes and examinations
  • If enough doctors are interested, you also have the opportunity to give them English lessons. Foreign medical missions visit and work at the hospital several times a year. During your assignment you can accompany them and, if necessary, do translations for them and the patients.

The variety and depth of your tasks depends on how much experience you have already gained in the medical field and how good your Spanish language skills are. Your motivation and willingness to work are also decisive for this. However, you should remember that this is a medical job and that both your tasks and your working hours are geared towards the needs of the patients. Basically, you mainly work in the mornings when the doctors are in the house. It is also possible to take part in weekend and night shifts to get a deeper insight into the work of the medical and nursing staff.

This project is suitable for students who are already studying medicine or pharmacy or are planning to start such a course. Even if you have completed nursing training or would like to work in a similar field, this project is just right for you. Previous experience is of course welcome and you should note that the knowledge you have gained in the field of medicine or pharmacy influences how specific your activities are during your assignment and how diverse you can ultimately be deployed.

It is important that you master basic Spanish at B1 level in order to take part in the project. Although you will have access to a free Spanish course during your assignment, your activities will still depend on your language skills. Advanced Spanish skills give you more options during your assignment.

Volunteer work or internship in the medical field

Volunteering or internship

You can take part in this project as a volunteer or as an intern!

As a volunteer, you can decide for yourself how many hours a day you want to work on your project. As an intern, on the other hand, you will have received the relevant requirements from your university, which must be observed during your assignment. Inform the team in advance about your school internship requirements so that your personal work plan can be worked out for you. In addition, if you have specific personal goals and expectations, you can address them at any time so that your tasks can be adjusted accordingly. At the end of your internship or volunteer work, you will receive a certificate that records your achievements and your learning success.

Free Spanish lessons

Volunteers and interns receive free Spanish language tuition throughout their stay abroad. Classes focus on developing the four basic communication skills: listening, understanding, speaking, reading and writing. Students are encouraged to speak Spanish from day one and use it in typical everyday situations as soon as they leave the classroom.

Immerse yourself in Dominican culture!

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer Apartments in the Dominican Republic

As a rule, the volunteers share shared rooms with a maximum of four beds. A single room can also be booked for an additional charge. Free WiFi and use of the washing machine are included. The rooms are fully furnished.

The advantage of sharing accommodation is that you will definitely make friends for life here. The cultural exchange with volunteers from all over the world is enriching and a valuable experience! Mutual respect and consideration is a given and household tasks are shared.

Located in the center of the coastal towns of Las Terrenas and Samaná, the accommodations are scenic, relaxed and peaceful locations. The deployment sites are only a 10 to 20 minute walk away. The city center and the beautiful seafront promenade are also close by, where there are many restaurants, bars and shops. The area is safe, there is a "tourist police" on the streets.

Location

Samaná & Las Terrenas

Our projects are located in the towns of Samaná and Las Terrenas, in the heart of the Samaná province in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. Both small towns are very relaxed, peaceful and safe. The weather on the peninsula remains largely the same warm throughout the year: the average temperature is around 25°C.

Samaná is located on the peninsula of the same name. The small coastal town impresses with its harbor and a beautiful beach as well as many small islands nearby, some of which can be reached by bridges. Here on the peninsula you have a wonderful view of Samaná Bay, where thousands of humpback whales cavort during their mating season in the winter months. In addition to the wonderful nature that surrounds Samaná, the town itself also has a lot to offer. On the promenade, for example, you will find many restaurants, cafés and bars.

Las Terrenas is a coastal village on the Samaná Peninsula. The region is important for various ecosystems: mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs. The popular holiday destination is known for the Playa Las Terrenas beach. There is also the Pueblo de los Pescadores promenade, which runs directly along the sea and is lined with many bars and restaurants. In addition to the Caribbean beaches decorated with palm trees, you will find the highest mountain in the Caribbean, the Pico Duarte, and the historic colonial city of Santo Domingo on the peninsula.

Do you fancy Caribbean flair with palm beaches, sun and cocktails? Then off to tropical paradise! Both Samaná and Las Terrenas are the perfect places for this. They are also a good way to improve your Spanish.

Free time a beach in the Dominican Republic

Your free time in Samaná/Las Terrenas

Fantastic sandy beaches, crystal clear water, palm trees and happy people - all this is associated with the Caribbean. Samaná is one of those places in the Dominican Republic that fits that notion. The peninsula is surrounded by extensive palm-fringed beaches and turquoise-blue waves. Let your soul dangle on the beach or discover the colorful underwater world with a snorkel and diving goggles.

The provincial capital of the same name exudes a very relaxed atmosphere with its quiet harbor and friendly inhabitants: Stroll through the streets lined with colorful houses, where the rhythms of merengue, bachata and salsa music often reach your ears. The two-kilometre-long beach promenade, along which there are numerous restaurants and bars, also invites you to stroll. Here you can end your day in the project with the other volunteers and enjoy the Dominican cuisine. Let the Caribbean lifestyle affect you and get infected by the relaxed vibes. Of course, with day and weekend trips, you have time to explore other beaches in the area, such as Playa Rincon, a spacious beach near a fishing village.

If you need a change from the relaxed beach life, the area offers you many other exciting leisure activities. For example, Samaná is known for the exciting whale watching tours where you can watch the giants leap over the waves? . You can also visit the nearby Los Haitises National Park, which is the largest national park in the Dominican Republic with an area of 1600 km². Here you can roam through extensive mangrove forests and discover numerous karst islands that rise out of the water and caves where you can see paintings by the Taínos, the island's indigenous people. The location therefore also has a lot to offer for history buffs!

In addition to Samaná, the coastal town of Las Terrenas is also relevant to your project. This town is also incredibly paradisiacal with its palm-fringed beaches and is considered a real insider tip - here you can get to know the unadulterated Dominican way of life far away from mass tourism. But sports enthusiasts will definitely get their money's worth - for example, the colorful coral reefs invite you to go snorkeling and diving. You can also paddle your surfboard in the waves or try kitesurfing.

In Las Terrenas, don't miss the popular El Limón waterfall, located about 20 kilometers east of town, nestled in the jungle near the mountain village of the same name, Limón. Make your way to this adventurous site on foot or horseback - the waterfall is not accessible by car.

If you have a little more time, you have the opportunity to explore places further afield. Discover the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, where you can stroll through the beautiful historic old town. Would you like to get away from the coast and into the mountains? Then the Pico Duarte in the Cordillera Central mountain range awaits you, which at over 3000 meters is the highest mountain in the Dominican Republic. Hike through tropical landscapes, pine and deciduous forests, past crystal clear mountain streams and finally reach a rocky mountain landscape. For nature lovers and adventurers, this is an experience like no other!

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for the Dominican Republic?

For the project in the Dominican Republic you need a tourist visa, which you can apply for free upon entry. If you stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a fee-based extension at the responsible immigration office. Without an extension, you will have to pay a fine when you leave the airport if you stay longer than 30 days, the amount of which depends on the length of time you overstayed your permitted stay.

For this project you need knowledge of English and B1 knowledge of Spanish (proof is required).

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.
