Project with marine animals in South Africa

What's the matter?

If you volunteer in the field of wildlife and animal welfare, you should make sure that the welfare of the animal and species protection are the top priority for the project. With our magazine article, we don't just want to help you with what to look out for when choosing a project. We also want to show you why animal welfare is important in tourism and during a project assignment.

South Africa has an impressive and diverse flora and fauna. This also includes 43 species of marine mammals, which you can observe here in their natural habitat! However, many species are threatened with extinction. For example, through environmental pollution or overfishing of the seas caused by humans. According to the environmental organization WWF, for example, the white shark is on the list of endangered species. Some whale species are also critically endangered.

In this marine wildlife conservation project, you can help preserve marine wildlife! With your volunteer work, you help ensure that this fascinating biodiversity is preserved for future generations.

Your place of work is a foundation near Port Elizabeth that works to protect endangered marine animals. Located on the shores of the Indian Ocean, it is in the middle of the world famous Garden Route region. Here you will find a breathtaking landscape, with azure bays, natural sandy beaches and dense forests. Offshore, the Indian Ocean is home to numerous species of marine life such as killer whales, great white sharks, dolphins, penguins and sea turtles.

The aim of our project in South Africa is to promote the protection of sea creatures and nature in the region and to sensitize the population to animal and nature conservation. In addition, community development is to be promoted and the general educational situation on site improved.

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer in this project, you can become active in three different areas: Animal & nature conservation, educational work & English lessons in schools, and research & data collection.

In the area of environmental protection and nature conservation, for example, you will help to rescue seabirds such as penguins or recover stranded marine animals such as whales. You bring sea turtles that come to the beach to lay their eggs to a protected coastal area. You will also support Beach Clean Ups and plant trees to protect against erosion in the coastal region.

In the field of awareness and education, you will help implement an environmental protection program at local preschools and elementary schools. You educate the students about animal and nature conservation issues and use playful elements, such as plays, to help raise awareness. You can also take part in English lessons.

In the research area of the project you - together with a team of marine researchers - go out to sea in a boat and observe whales and dolphins. You photograph them and collect data about their population, which you later enter into an online database. You also analyze the water quality of the surrounding rivers and the sea. In order to record the population of seabirds and research their behavior, you provide the animals with numbers, for example.

In addition to these three main areas, it is also possible to help with local leisure activities and adventure tours and to work with international guests. Students also have the opportunity, if they wish, to carry out their own small research project and to work together with a local researcher.

Your exact activities in the project for animal welfare and behavioral research depend on the respective season, the weather conditions and the needs of the assignment site and will be discussed with you on site. In bad weather, indoor activities take place. You will usually work from Monday to Friday from around 8:30 a.m. to 16:00 p.m.

Location

Port Elizabeth in South Africa

Port Elizabeth region

White sand, crystal clear water and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The picturesque scenery on the famous Garden Route on the Indian Ocean will inspire you!

East of the city you can see jungle and stretches of coast. The Robberg peninsulas on the western side are not far either. As a nature reserve, they are a true paradise for their residents: a colony of seals. Likewise, one of the largest breeding colonies of gulls lives on the South African coast. Until 1920 this was the site for a whaling station. Today, the large sea creatures feel very comfortable there, especially during their mating season between July and December. You can also spot dolphins in the many surfs.

The perfect place to spot different animals, relax on the beach or surf, go hiking or even explore the city!

There is even an inscription on the pyramid with the following words: “To the memory of one of the most perfect of human beings, who has given her name to the town below.” Isn't that romantic?
