Farm Volunteer in Vietnam

What's the matter?

Overuse of pesticides is a major problem in Vietnam. In many places, the toxins destroy the soil and make it impossible to grow on it. Organic farm work is relatively unknown in Vietnam and not widespread. Many farmers fear high costs and poor sales.

Your placement would like to break down this prejudice and set a good example for a sustainable, ecological farm. The organic farm is located in a rural outskirts around the capital Hanoi. The site itself is surrounded by rice fields, other farms and some small farmer houses. The small paths between the farms are ideal for hiking and cycling.

A total of five farmers work at the site, who have committed themselves to sustainable farm work for the benefit of nature and people. They do not use any chemical additives such as plant or insecticides and feed on the farm's produce. Since a lot of work has to be done by a few people here, your help with the daily maintenance of the gardens, flower beds and animals is very welcome. Not only can you help with the farm work here, but you also have the opportunity to spread the techniques you have learned.

Your tasks as a volunteer

During your volunteer work in Vietnam you will help with all the work that needs to be done on the farm. For example, you sow and harvest vegetables and water the plants. You also help with mowing and removing the cut grass. You feed the animals that live on the farm, such as ducks, chickens and pigs. You'll also learn how to make and use a natural pesticide from herbs, and then help the farmers make it yourself.

You will usually work Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. You are free on the weekends. Catering is also taken care of: you eat three times a day together with the team and the locals.

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation in Hanoi

During your time in Vietnam you will live with the farmers in a simple hut made of wood and bamboo. As a rule, up to four other volunteers are housed with you in the house, the rooms are separated by gender. The property has western-style toilets. You can also get your breakfast, lunch and dinner here.

Location

Hanoi

Hanoi is located inland in northern Vietnam. The metropolis is not only the second largest city in Vietnam, but also the oldest capital in Southeast Asia: In 2010 it celebrated its thousandth anniversary. To this day, the three-story turtle pagoda “Thap Rua” from the 15th century is the symbol of the metropolis. The structure is located in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, which separated Old Hanoi from the former French colonial quarter.

You can still see the French, but also the Chinese and Southeast Asian influences on the cityscape today. There are small temples, narrow streets with small shops, handicraft shops, large markets, countless cafes and street food places and much more!

Hanoi is a wonderful starting point to get to know the multifaceted country and everyday life in Vietnam!

Free time in Hanoi

Your free time in Hanoi

During your time as a volunteer you will have the opportunity to get to know Hanoi, the oldest capital in Southeast Asia. In 2010 it celebrated its XNUMXth anniversary and, given its age, has countless corners worth seeing. By the way: Motorized two-wheelers are the number one means of transport in Southeast Asia. If you feel like it, you can rent a scooter and explore the city with it.

On your tour of discovery through Hanoi - whether on foot or by scooter - there is a lot to discover: The symbol of the metropolis is the three-storey turtle pagoda Thap Rua from the 15th century. The structure is located in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, which is ideal for a long walk along the shore. Thap Rua is not the only pagoda in Hanoi. Around 600 other temples and pagodas are spread throughout the city. So you will keep walking past them and discovering new ones on your way through the city.

From Hanoi you can explore the surrounding area and other destinations in northern Vietnam. Visit the famous artist spots Bat Trang and Dong Ho! Plan a weekend for Halong Bay, about 170 kilometers away: This top sight with its fossilized sugar loaves and lime needles will inspire you! The bay is around 1500 square kilometers in size and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even the way there is an experience: the journey mostly leads along the Red River, past dark green paddy fields.

Our on-site team also offers various tours that are included in the services:

1. Hanoi Street Food Tour and Train Street with Egg Coffee
This excursion lasts half a day, approximately from 16pm to 19pm. You'll have a chance to sample the best of Hanoi's local cuisine: beef noodle soup (pho), steamed rice rolls (banh cuon), and Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi). Afterwards you will visit a café on Train Street where a unique experience awaits you. Here you can enjoy a Vietnamese egg coffee with a view of the passing train.

2. Bat Trang Pottery Village
The small village in northern Vietnam is about 13 km southeast of Hanoi, on the other side of the Chuong Duong Bridge. It is very famous for its high quality ceramics and pottery products. The vases, bowls, bowls etc are exported worldwide. On this tour you have the opportunity to visit the exhibitions and then make a ceramic product yourself and take it home.

3. Hanoi Highlights Day Tour
This tour includes a visit to the Temple of Literature, Tran Quoc Pagoda, West Lake - the city's largest freshwater lake, Hoan Kiem Lake, St. Joseph's Cathedral, as well as an ancient traditional house so unique in Vietnam no longer exists. How far in advance do I have to register?

Ideally your registration takes place at least 3-6 months before the desired departure date, But also short-term registrations are up 1-2 months before the planned departure is possible.

But it could be that your dream project is already booked. In this case we will try together to find a suitable alternative for you.

Can I travel with a friend or in a group?

Yes! On request we enable a double room if you for two with a friend or a friend, or an apartment or other suitable accommodation for groups.

We are very happy to enable our participants to go on a project and share accommodation with friends. Shared accommodation is usually possible both in the volunteer house and with the host family, although the room in the volunteer house may also be shared with other participants. In some locations there is also the option of sharing an apartment.

When registering, please always mention the person(s) traveling with you!

Can I combine projects?

Yes! You can combine projects at one location, at different locations, but also in different countries. It is also possible to combine a project with a trip. You can specify your desired combination directly when registering.
