Volunteering in social projects in the Caribbean

What's the matter?

Our partner organization in the Dominican Republic runs a Community Attention Center in Samaná, with a team of trained therapists, social workers, teachers and an educator. Together they support and support children, young people and adults with disabilities – both individually and as families. Space is created for child and youth care, leisure activities, therapy and education.

Participants learn active community participation and social interaction through games and art. Your own abilities should be discovered and promoted. The foundation offers educational support, accompanied by awareness-raising measures for integration and diversity.

Volunteers are always welcome, because there is a constant need for individual support, tutoring and physical education. Whether it's because of poor study habits or a lack of one-on-one help, many children with disabilities in the Dominican Republic struggle to keep up. Often a lack of self-confidence is the biggest obstacle for the students. Therefore, the foundation provides a learning environment with plenty of praise and encouragement. In this way, the volunteers help the children to be successful in school.

In addition to the already established community activities and programs, volunteers can develop new projects with the financial and organizational support of the association. These can be projects to promote environmental awareness or sports activities, for example.

The aim of the project is to improve the lives of children and young people with disabilities. They should be strengthened, experience a better quality of life and receive high-quality instruction. The families and the communities should also receive a lot of attention from the foundation. The project aims to support people in particular who are in a difficult socio-economic and health situation due to the current crises.

Your tasks as a volunteer

The programs are constantly adapted to the needs of the community and to the number and capacity of the volunteers. If you would like to work in a specific area, you can discuss this with the coordinator in advance. However, you may be asked to participate in a combination of activities depending on what's coming up. The tasks in the volunteer project include:

  • Collaboration with our team of teachers and psychologists who take care of the students with special needs: learning through play, developing activities to promote the socio-emotional, cognitive, psychomotor and life-practical areas, supporting the students with their own ideas to promote their self-determination, individuality and autonomy
  • Support of the team in activities for special education at individual and group level in the center and / or during home visits
  • Assistance in the preparation and management of thematic workshops (knowledge of Spanish is helpful here) and support in direct supervision, supervision and accompaniment
  • Participate in weekly meetings with other volunteers and staff to create lesson plans and educational projects
  • Support for educational and social activities and creation of didactic material using recycling techniques
  • Assisting in the design and editing of multimedia content
  • Learn how to identify the needs of individuals, families or communities and assist with case studies and interventions to develop a methodology
  • Assistance in leisure, development and therapeutic activities for children and young adults with special needs
  • Support children, spend time with them, play, learn, sing, dance, help them with the educational and integration process
  • Supporting the team in youth, family and community development and dedicated support to parents and carers with home visits (knowledge of Spanish is helpful here)
  • Support in organizing events (e.g. fundraising parties, intercultural events, meetings for locals and volunteers with activities to promote exchange and integration)
  • Planning and conducting workshops, including on the subject of disability (advanced knowledge of Spanish required)
  • Cooperation with other organizations

Initiative and bringing in your own ideas are very welcome! As a volunteer, you are also welcome to develop new projects with the support of the organization, such as environmental programs, sports activities or language courses.

Volunteering in the Community Care Project in the Caribbean

Volunteering or internship

You can participate in this program as a Volunteer or as Trainee

As a volunteer, you can work any number of hours per week, that's entirely up to you. As an intern, you will have certain requirements from your university that you must adhere to. In this case, you will inform the team in advance about the school internship requirements so that a personal work plan can be worked out together. You are also welcome to address your personal goals and expectations - the organization will prepare a report for students on the learning outcomes and performance achieved.

Free Spanish lessons

Learn Spanish for free in the Caribbean!

Volunteers and interns receive for the entire duration of the stay abroad free language lessons in Spanish. Classes focus on developing the four basic communication skills: listening, understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are encouraged to speak Spanish from day one and use it in typical everyday situations as soon as they leave the classroom.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer Apartments in the Dominican Republic

As a rule, the volunteers share shared rooms with a maximum of four beds. A single room can also be booked for an additional charge. Free WiFi and use of the washing machine are included. The rooms are fully furnished.

The advantage of sharing accommodation is that you will definitely make friends for life here. The cultural exchange with volunteers from all over the world is enriching and a valuable experience! Mutual respect and consideration is a given and household tasks are shared.

Located in the center of the coastal towns of Las Terrenas and Samaná, the accommodations are scenic, relaxed and peaceful locations. The deployment sites are only a 10 to 20 minute walk away. The city center and the beautiful seafront promenade are also close by, where there are many restaurants, bars and shops. The area is safe, there is a "tourist police" on the streets.

Location

Samaná

The project is located on the Samaná Peninsula in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. The small coastal town impresses with its harbor and a beautiful beach as well as many small islands nearby, some of which can be reached by bridges.

On the peninsula you have a wonderful view of the Bay of Samaná, where thousands of humpback whales cavort during their mating season in the winter months. In addition to the wonderful nature that surrounds Samaná, the town itself also has a lot to offer. On the promenade, for example, you will find many restaurants, cafés and bars. The weather on the peninsula remains largely the same throughout the year: the average temperature is around 25°C.

Do you fancy Caribbean flair with palm beaches, sun and cocktails? Then on to the tropical paradise of Samaná!

Free time in Samaná, Dominican Republic

Your free time in Samaná

After work and on days off, you have time to relax and explore the paradise island on your own.

Take time to soak up the Caribbean lifestyle as you relax in the shade of palm trees, stroll the busy boardwalk and listen to the ubiquitous salsa music.

Of course, this is only a fraction of what Samaná has to offer. As you will find out, the entire peninsula is a single natural jewel full of worthwhile excursion destinations. Go exploring with other volunteers to explore secluded beaches and traditional fishing villages in the midst of unspoilt nature, hike to the top of Pico Duarte or swim against the backdrop of rushing waterfalls.

A special highlight is the Los Haitises National Park with its dense mangrove forest, pristine beaches and beautiful limestone caves, some of which still have old paintings from the pre-colonial period.

If you have collected enough impressions of nature, we recommend a visit to the historic capital Santo Domingo, whose magnificent colonial buildings include the oldest fortress, university and cathedral in the new world.

In addition, Samaná Bay is also a great place to go whale watching or learn to kitesurf if you feel like a little more thrill after all this natural and cultural program.
