Your sabbatical at a school in Nepal

Children teach in Nepal

The literacy rate in Nepal is relatively low. The reasons are different. The teachers are often not well trained, the premises are often insufficient and there is a lack of teaching materials. In addition, it is not uncommon for classes to be canceled completely. Therefore, it is not easy for children to attend school regularly and receive a good education.

With a sabbatical at a school, you support the staff on site and can thus contribute to a good school education for Nepalese children. Your support is always welcome!

Your employment in Nepal

Your placement during your social sabbatical in Nepal is one of several Elementary schools. Depending on your needs, you will be assigned to a school by our on-site team. Depending on the project location, the size of the classes varies between 10 and 40 children per class. Schools often lack staff, suitable premises and teaching materials. Therefore, support is always welcome.

Your tasks at a school in Nepal

You'll be quick on your sabbatical at a school in Nepal To take responsibility. For example, it is possible for you to stand in for a teacher and take over entire classes. It is therefore helpful to focus on the most important things before the sabbatical assignment in Nepal prepare and already have lots of ideas and bring flexibility. Common games, in which children move around a lot, sing songs and learn in a playful way, are very popular. In addition to colorful ideas in their luggage, the children are also happy to receive pads, crayons and pencils.

In order not to bring too much unrest into the teaching processes, it is good to work as a teacher at the school for longer than four weeks. The longer the assignment, the better the learning behavior of the children, who of course also get used to their teachers.

Everyday work at a school in Nepal

Usually the lessons take place Mondays to Fridays and also on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 16 p.m. You work 5-6 days a week where you work about between 4-7 hours a day but no more than 40 hours a week. The lunch break is scheduled for 13 p.m. in many schools. It can happen that lesson plans are changed at short notice or, for example, that lessons are canceled once in a while. If you feel like it and would like to get involved on such days, you can combine teaching with other projects at the location.

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation in Chitwan

In Chitwan you have the possibility to choose between three different types of accommodation:

  • host family
  • Volunteer House
  • Hotel

You live with a maximum of one other volunteer in a host family. Since all of the host families are in close proximity to one another, all of the participants are, so to speak, neighbours. The houses of our families are very simple, partly built with clay, but clean.

You also have the option of being accommodated in a volunteer house with a maximum of six other participants or, depending on availability, in a small hotel. Both buildings are on the same property.

You have to wash the laundry yourself or hand it in for a fee for hand washing. We provide you with internet access via a small hotel in the same village. You can also buy a SIM card for your mobile phone. The best thing to do is to ask our team on site.

Important for you to know: The electricity is regularly shut off nationwide for up to 12 hours. In addition, there is only water from a pump and showering or washing is usually done in the open air in a bush shower.

During your volunteer work or your internship abroad, you will receive two meals a day. There is usually no breakfast in the traditional sense in Nepal. Tea is drunk in the morning and around 9 o'clock there is a simple meal of rice and vegetables, sometimes with chicken. In the evening around 19 p.m. you also get a dish of rice and vegetables. At lunchtime, tea is mainly drunk. In the school projects, it is possible to buy lunch in the canteen for around 10 rupees. Otherwise, most RGV participants eat cookies and fruit they have brought with them for lunch.

Location

Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara

Nepal is a country of superlatives! In the small Asian state, much of the Himalayas are home to the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest (8848 meters) and seven other eight-thousanders.

But Nepal has much more to offer than these snow-capped giants! More than 60 ethnic groups with many different traditions and religious customs live in Nepal. The old royal cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are also well worth seeing.

No matter where you are in the country - there are exciting things to discover everywhere!

Kathmandu,

Located in the center of the country, Kathmandu has been described in mystical Hindu and Buddhist legends dating back thousands of years. However, the capital is not only a cultural center, but also a political one: embassies of many countries and organizations for development aid are based in Kathmandu. The cityscape is characterized by tall buildings in a metropolitan style. The traditional old town, on the other hand, is peppered with Hindu temples and other religious buildings. You will also find many traditional shops with numerous spices, carvings and fabrics in the dreamy alleys of the old town!

If you want to experience colorful lights, historic temples and the breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas and immerse yourself completely in this fascinating world, Kathmandu is the place for you!

Chitwan,

Chitwan National Park is located in southern Nepal, in the foothills of the Himalayas, bordering India. The park itself stretches over an incredible 932 square kilometers! Animal species that live here include rhinos, leopards, bears and the 'king of the jungle': the Bengal tiger. Within Chitwan there are also a variety of resorts where you can not only stay, but also go on exciting safaris.

Nature lovers and animal lovers will never get bored here! If you also want to get to know village life in Nepal, you've come to the right place!

Pokhara

Our project site, Pokhara, is about 200 km west of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. With around 313.000 inhabitants, it is Nepal's second largest city. Pokhara stretches from Phewa Lake to the foot of the mighty Annapurna massif and has a lot to offer in terms of landscape. From the higher points of the city one has a breathtaking view of the mountain range, whose image is characterized by the sacred Mt. Machhapuchhre.

Hiking enthusiasts in particular will certainly feel at home here, so close to the mountains! Pokhara has a lot to offer for outdoor fans!

Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara

Your free time in Kathmandu, Chitwan or Pokhara

Kathmandu,

Kathmandu is an exciting city with a lot to discover. As part of the hippie trail, the Nepalese capital is a popular destination for hippies, but also for tourists from all over the world. You will feel this especially in the Thamel district. The district is considered the tourist hub of the city with its large number of restaurants and bars that invite you to linger.

It gets historical at Durbar Square. Here are the impressive Royal Palace and more than 50 pagodas, stupas, temples and palaces. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only popular with tourists, but many locals also like to spend time there.

You can find a similar place in Lalitpur, the city of beauty. The city is right next to Kathmandu and, in addition to Durbar Square, is particularly enchanting with its golden temple and the Buddhist cityscape.

Chitwan,

When in Chitwan, a variety of leisure activities await you, such as excursions in the national park, trekking tours and safaris through the Nepalese jungle. With a bit of luck you can spot native animals such as rhinos, leopards, bears, Bengal cats, jackals, foxes, honey badgers, mongooses, snakes, monitor lizards and the infamous Bengal tiger.

If you are interested in birds, then a bird watching tour is for you. It is best to inquire at the park's department. There you can book various tours and offers.

Pokhara

For those interested in culture, Pokhara offers a visit to the many temples, monasteries and museums, such as the "International Mountain Museum". But especially for nature lovers there is a lot to see in the vicinity. Take a stroll along Phewa Lake or rent a boat to explore the lake.

The climb up the smaller Mt. Sarangkot is worth it for the view alone. From here you can enjoy the view of the Pokhara Valley, Phewa Lake and of course parts of the Himalayas. In your free time, it is also recommended to visit the nearby caves, such as the sacred Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave and visit the impressive Devi's Fall waterfall.
