Organic farm work in Senegal

What's the matter?

Your place of work is an association of young farmers in south-west Senegal who have been active since 2012. The non-profit organization is involved in various areas in which you can become active as a volunteer: On the one hand, you support a farm founded by the organization that develops new agricultural practices through ecological cultivation methods and BIO concepts and can thus learn an incredible amount about nature conservation and learn about sustainable agriculture.

Furthermore, the mission site tries to pass on the valuable knowledge and thereby sensitize the local population to nature conservation. This is achieved, for example, by integrating young people without training or school-leaving qualifications, who are given practical training here. The organization is also active on a voluntary basis and supports other farms and village communities, poorer families in the area and other projects in Senegal. At the same time, the deployment site on the coast is involved in the reforestation of mangroves.

The aim of the project is to contribute to nature conservation in Senegal by establishing biologically sustainable practices. Attempts are being made to create attractive prospects for the locals in the villages, so that the young generation does not migrate to the cities or other countries, but instead recognizes the potential that exists locally.

Your tasks as a volunteer

Your tasks in the project will mainly revolve around working outdoors. The areas of activity are very diverse and you are cordially invited to lend a hand everywhere.

The following tasks await you in the nature conservation project:

  • Planting and watering of various tree species to ensure reforestation
  • Preparation of the seedbeds
  • Planting of vegetables and medicinal plants
  • care of the animals
  • Construction of small houses made of mud and bamboo
  • Help with well construction and the installation of solar pumps
  • Support for training programs and the implementation of workshops (if you have the appropriate prior knowledge)
  • Excursions to other farms of the organization

As a volunteer, you are welcome to decide on a specific area or suggest your own creative ideas and contribute them to the project work.

You usually work 6 hours a day from Monday to Friday. The day begins at 08:30 a.m. with breakfast. After the lunch break, the second round of work finally begins. On the weekends you are usually free and therefore have the opportunity to explore the area together with other volunteers and to go on trips and excursions.

Western Senegal

A relatively small country in the far west of Africa, Senegal is one of the continent's most exciting travel destinations thanks to its diverse natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Since the modern and cosmopolitan state has been governed democratically since its independence, it is also considered an important anchor of stability in West Africa.

Characterized by the different climate zones of Senegal, the landscapes of the country are as diverse as they are worth seeing. The unique mix of desert regions in the north, dense forests in the south and river deltas and dream beaches along the coast in the west is definitely worth exploring. The rich biodiversity of the country is just as exciting. Rare animal species such as hippos, leopards or whales can be admired here, as well as huge mangrove forests or the imposing baobab trees.

Your free time in Senegal

Your free time in Senegal

Your project is located in a rural area in western Senegal, not far from the Delta de Saloum National Park. In the park you can explore the river deltas of the Sine and Saloum streams with their mangrove forests and rare animal and plant species. In order not to lose your bearings in the tangle of hundreds of arms of the river, you should visit the nature reserve, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, preferably together with one of the local fishermen.

In addition to the national park, you will find many original forests near your accommodation and not too far away the Senegalese Atlantic coast with its famous golden beaches. In the small town where your project is located, there are also many opportunities to experience the local culture as closely and authentically as possible. For example, there are often concerts with traditional music and village community events that you can visit.

RGV FAQ
to the project

How far in advance do I have to register?

Ideally your registration takes place at least 3-6 months before the desired departure date, But also short-term registrations are up 1-2 months before the planned departure is possible.

But it could be that your dream project is already booked. In this case we will try together to find a suitable alternative for you.

Can I travel with a friend or in a group?

Yes! On request we enable a double room if you for two with a friend or a friend, or an apartment or other suitable accommodation for groups.

We are very happy to enable our participants to go on a project and share accommodation with friends. Shared accommodation is usually possible both in the volunteer house and with the host family, although the room in the volunteer house may also be shared with other participants. In some locations there is also the option of sharing an apartment.

When registering, please always mention the person(s) traveling with you!

Can I combine projects?

Yes! You can combine projects at one location, at different locations, but also in different countries. It is also possible to combine a project with a trip. You can specify your desired combination directly when registering.

Combination options at a glance:

  1. Combine programs in one country
  2. Combine programs across countries
  3. Combine a program with a language course
  4. Combine a program with ours Adventure & Trips

There are a few things Project combinations to note: The minimum length of stay per project must be observed and you may incur additional costs for country combinations, for example for an intermediate flight.

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Do I need a visa?

As an EU citizen and from Switzerland, you do not need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. If you want to stay longer than 90 days, you have to apply for a residence permit in the first month at the location.

What language skills do I need for a project in Senegal?

You definitely need knowledge of French for on-site communication.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

What are the requirements for the project?

In addition to creativity and initiative, you should be interested in a sustainable lifestyle and enjoy gardening and physical activity for the project. Welcome - but not a requirement - is previous knowledge of agroforestry, permaculture, earth building or in the pedagogical field as well as pleasure in giving language lessons in French, English or German. The only skills you should bring with you beforehand are sufficient knowledge of French, which will enable you to communicate on site.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.
