Volunteering at a school for children with autism in South Africa

Much more time could have been spent in Cape Town and in South Africa in general. So if you can plan more time, then by all means do so and try to travel to other African countries as well. I totally regretted that I was “only” there for three months. I fell in love with this country and will definitely come back!

Lisa's time in South Africa

"I love South Africa"
On the 5. Last October I had a time full of new experiences and impressions in Cape Town. Since I had finished my Bachelor in Special Education and I am incredibly interested in the field of autism, the project was ideal for me, besides, I always wanted to go to Africa. So I had made the decision for my stay abroad relatively quickly.

The team in Germany

The RGV team in Germany was just great, I was able to come to them with any questions and they took a lot of time to provide me with sufficient information and advice, so I felt very well prepared.

Arrival and the first days in Cape Town

After landing, I was already expected at the airport and taken to our accommodation with three other volunteers. I was shown the student house, my accommodation for the next eight weeks. I was welcomed and integrated in a friendly manner by the other residents. The team on site was also very friendly and helpful. I was given the most necessary things to take with me and the orientation program on the following day was also very helpful. The following days until the start of the project were then used to explore Cape Town.

My project

On Tuesday I was able to start my project. I drove to the project with other volunteers, where I was warmly welcomed by the headmaster. During my assignment, I was assigned to different classes in order to get as comprehensive an impression as possible. If there was a great need for support in a certain class on one or more days, I would help out there. I was also warmly welcomed by the teachers. What exactly the task was in the individual classes depended on the class in question. I mostly supported one or more students with tasks and activities, but I also played with them or read to them.

The stay and my experiences in Cape Town

I really fell in love with Cape Town, this city is amazing because it offers so much. From sea and beach to mountains and forests, you can find everything there. But city dwellers also get their money's worth here. Since I love nature and hiking, I love the mountains, you can do amazing hikes there and enjoy the view. And the photos that you can only take there. However, you should be careful where you walk around with your camera and generally with your valuables. Unfortunately, Cape Town is also one of the more dangerous cities. You should be aware of that. However, if you are careful and follow the safety tips, you can also minimize the risk of something happening there.

My conclusion

After the volunteer work I traveled through South Africa for a month. Much more time could have been spent in Cape Town and in South Africa in general. So if you can plan more time, then by all means do so and try to travel to other African countries as well. I totally regretted that I was “only” there for three months. I fell in love with this country and will definitely come back!
