Volunteer work in the Social Entrepreneur Project in South Africa

  • Surrounded by nature
  • Varied activities
  • Knowledge sharing

Although South Africa is not considered a poor country, many residents still live in very humble conditions. This is also the case in the region around the Kruger National Park. In the Social Entrepreneur Project, you support people in founding and building their own sustainable companies. The goal: people should improve their living conditions through their own efforts and thus break the cycle of poverty in the long term.

Volunteer in the Social Entrepreneur Project in South Africa

What's the matter?

The region around your placement is quite poor and has one of the highest unemployment rates in all of South Africa. Many residents lack access to very basic things such as running water, electricity or schooling.

For the people in the region, this not only means a low standard of living. With poverty comes a constant sense of incapacitation. After all, without high-quality schooling and job opportunities, it is almost impossible for people to break out of the spiral of poverty on their own.

The project site was founded in 2011 as a non-profit organization. Their goal is to find sustainable solutions to problems such as environmental degradation, poverty, lack of education and unemployment in the greater Kruger National Park area. To this end, the NGO is developing various projects and programs together with local village communities.

In the social entrepreneurship project, you support the organization in building and promoting small local businesses and craft businesses. On the other hand, it is about giving young people skills and knowledge so that they can start and grow sustainable (small) businesses themselves.

Your tasks as a volunteer

In order to get to know the various programs of the organization and the local conditions better, your time in the project begins with an introductory week. During this you will get to know one of the programs every morning. In the afternoons you will support the employees in the After School Club, as the focus here is on a different topic or learning focus every day.

You will then spend a week in each program (recycling, sewing & farm project) supporting a project that focuses on entrepreneurship. You choose this according to your interests and skills.

These programs await you at your place of work:

  • Recycling Center: Manufacture of recycled products such as jewelry, candles, crockery, glass, etc.; Organizational work, sorting of materials
  • Sewing project: production of sustainable products, such as hats, bags, reusable tampons (as donations to schools together with information brochures) etc.
  • Farm Project: Agroecology; environmentally friendly irrigation, planting, harvesting; Manufacture of products such as sauces, syrup, flour etc.; Creating hydroponics
  • After School Club: Supervising the children in class and on excursions, helping with their homework, playing with the children, developing a varied educational program, focus on environmental and sustainability issues
  • Pre-school program: cleaning, cooking, supporting the educators, supervising the children, playing with the children, focus on early childhood development

For stays of less than four weeks, your introductory week lasts only three days and you can choose only one project (farm, recycling, sewing) to work on.

All programs in the social entrepreneurship project take place from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 16 p.m. There is a lunch break every day between 12:13 p.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. for refreshment.

Location

Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa

Greater Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is located in north-eastern South Africa, about a four-hour drive from Johannesburg, and at almost 20.000 square kilometers is the country's largest animal and nature reserve. With its incredible biodiversity and impressive landscape, the park is one of the absolute highlights of every trip to South Africa and a dream destination for travelers from all over the world.

Over 140 species of mammals as well as hundreds of birds, reptiles, fish and various other rare animals find shelter in the Kruger National Park. Of course you can also discover the famous Big Five - elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo and lion - here. However, the landscape of the park is at least as exciting as the animals. Depending on the region and season, breathtaking views of dense forests, endless grass and tree savannahs, striking rocks and mountains or the characteristic baobab trees open up to you.

Nature and wildlife fans in particular are in good hands here!

Free time in the Greater Kruger National Park

Your free time in the Greater Kruger National Park

After work you can use your free time to build a fire together with the other volunteers in your accommodation, have a barbecue, relax by the pool or enjoy the sunset with a drink at the bar. If you have a little more time, for example on the weekends, you should definitely explore your surroundings.

How about a safari in the Kruger National Park, for example? Go in search of the Big Five and hundreds of other rare animals, or simply marvel at the unique landscape of the park. There is probably only more nature to experience on a bush walk: Together with a ranger, you explore the national park on foot and enjoy nature in a completely natural and authentic way.

Also worth a visit is the Blyde River Canyon, the largest green canyon in the world. It doesn't matter whether you explore the turquoise blue water by boat or enjoy the incredible view of the green-covered gorge from the panorama route - a detour to the Blyde River Canyon is always an experience. If you are looking for a change after all that nature, the tourist town of Hoedspruit is not far away and is also worth a visit.
