Report from a school in Cape Town

I worked in a school for socially disadvantaged children. There I was given a list of the students who were not so good at reading and writing. They then had half an hour of tutoring with me every day. This was fun because I was able to work independently and after a while I grew fond of the children. I also got on very well with my work colleagues, which made my day-to-day work even better.

Leonie's time in South Africa

When I finally actually sat on the plane heading to Cape Town, I just thought to myself, "Oh my God - what have you gotten yourself into here." But I hardly arrived in Cape Town after about 20 hours of travel when I met two girls, which ones wore the same bright yellow t-shirt as me. From that first encounter developed a friendship that included car rental.

Renting a car was the best decision one could make to have free access to all the places, towns and beautiful views. It was particularly nice when we didn't know what to do in the evening and then just drove to Signal Hill and watched the sunset - our motto: "Watch more sunsets than Netflix."

The work in the project

Of course, when I wasn't driving to Cliton Beach, an open-air cinema or a wine festival, I went to work.

Living in the host family

Unlike all my friends, I lived with a host family. It took a lot of getting used to at first, but I quickly grew fond of my two sisters and my little brother, which was followed by school camping trips and DVD nights.

My highlights

All in all, I had a great time in South Africa, which didn't feel like three months, but in the end like two weeks. My highlight was a road trip to the Indian Ocean, the hike up Table Mountain, which took me 6 hours and the feeling of picking up your real parents from CPT airport because they wanted to visit you in South Africa for two weeks and also wanted to get to know my "second home".

A trip like this can be incredibly rewarding and it feels like a “break” from everyday life and everyday life. What confirmed me that I made the right decision was that I was never really homesick. I had arrived in South Africa.
