Traveling alone as a woman: our best travel tips

With our tips, traveling alone as a woman is no problem and you are on the safe side. Start your adventure abroad well prepared!

Young women in particular often have numerous concerns or fears before they travel alone for the first time. First of all, of course, you ask yourself if it isn't too dangerous. Traveling alone can be an extremely enriching experience: You broaden your horizons, become bolder and in this way get to know a foreign country and yourself best.

We travel-experienced women from the RGV team have thought about it together - and in this article we will tell you about ours best travel tips. Regardless of whether you are following your Volunteering abroad go out on your own or just want to discover solo travel for yourself, with our tips in your luggage you are safe on the road!

Our inspiring travel tips for you:

1. Travel light!
So you don't immediately come out as an "inexperienced tourist" and you are much more mobile. In addition, robberies can often be avoided by carrying few valuables with you - avoid jewelry or an expensive watch!

2. Be well organized!
Keep in mind that you may not have anyone locally from whom you can borrow money or a charger, for example. Our ultimate Packing List helps you to remember nothing.

3. Be open but not naive!
In general, be more critical of invitations from strangers and question their intentions. Especially in countries you don't know, it's safer not to be too trusting. Many strangers can become friends, but not all!

4. Meet new people
Still, traveling solo is the perfect way to meet new people! Especially in backpacker areas with many hostels, you will quickly meet young people from all over the world. Exploring the area with a small group can make it easier for you to get used to your new surroundings and add variety to your everyday travel routine.

5. Norms and Codes of Conduct
Adapt to the common norms and codes of conduct on site! This also applies if they do not correspond to your views! In most African and Asian countries, this means: it's better to do without hot pants and strapless tops - even if it's hot!

6. Only together!
If you drink alcohol, then only in moderation and with people you consider trustworthy! Always keep an eye on your glass. If you do realize you've had too much to drink, it's better to say goodbye and take a cab home.

7. Address
Always carry the address of your accommodation with you! It is best to have them written down in the local language for the taxi or Uber drivers. Public transport is not safe in many countries! You should also avoid walking alone, especially at night.

8. Social Media
Use social media to exchange ideas with other (female) travelers or to meet them on site! There are many online communities dedicated to women traveling alone. Our favorites are wanderful and the Travelodge Singlettes. Wanderful is a kind of couch surfing only for women - the community also organizes social events worldwide. On Travelettes you will find many inspiring articles, testimonials and great insider travel tips.

9. Put away your phone!
Leave your cell phone in your pocket - even if it's for planning your trip and Safety still so useful! In "offline mode" it is much easier for you to make contacts and really experience the unknown country intensively. In the long run, it is more enriching to live fully in the here and now while on the move. Learn to enjoy alone time!

10. Have fun!
Talk to the local people! Especially the women who live in your travel country can give you valuable tips and tell you about their own experiences. If you do find yourself in a situation where you feel unsafe, be sure to have someone close by you can call.

The general rule: Going out alone is adventure enough! That means in plain language: Do not take any unnecessary risks on your journey! Then you will not only come home safe, but also richer in many unforgettable experiences.

We hope our tips have eased your concerns about traveling alone and show you how valuable the experience of traveling is - especially solo. Remember: the best time to travel is always now! So don't let that stop you - let's go on your personal adventure!
