Volunteer work in the ecological house building project in Senegal

What's the matter?

The non-profit organization in Senegal works to unite people who share the same ideals - it wants to create understanding, solidarity and mutual support between them. The organization emerged from an association of farmers, various experts and technicians from the fields of environmental protection, ecological agriculture and house construction as well as water supply for the construction of wells, sanitary facilities and irrigation systems.

The project site is a small traditional village with around 100 inhabitants. It is one of a total of 52 villages in the local municipality. The center sees the support and accompaniment of the rural population in their various projects as their central task. These are organized throughout the Diourbel region.

The current goal is to set up an education center at the site. This is intended to be a place where environmental issues such as horticulture and reforestation, ecological construction methods such as clay building and much more are conveyed. In this way, more attention should be drawn to these important topics and at the same time cultural exchange should be promoted.

Overall, the project is about learning from each other, exchanging ideas, getting involved and taking the experiences home with you to start your own projects there.

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer in the ecological house building project in Senegal, you can actively support the construction of the new education center on site. In this way, you have the opportunity to be part of the construction of something new and to experience the development of the project up close.

Specifically, the tasks may include the following:

  • Assisting in the construction of the building for the center and small guest houses, using ecological methods and materials
  • Gardening in the village: planting and watering of plants and trees
  • Support with IT, online presence and others: website, social media, workshops for locals

As a volunteer, you can choose an area to focus on in your project work. Feel free to bring your own ideas with you!

When volunteering in the house building project in Senegal, you will usually work for a maximum of six hours from Monday to Friday. You are usually free on the weekends. Before work there is breakfast at around 8:30 a.m., after which everyone starts with their respective tasks. You are always integrated into the work process of the team and have a contact person who will help you with any questions.

During your volunteer work, there will also be trips to the organization's other volunteer sites. This gives you an insight into the projects at the other locations.

Accommodation Catering

Volunteer House in the Diourbel region

During your volunteer work you will live in a volunteer house near the place of work. A small traditional house awaits you in a Senegalese village. Here you will experience an authentic way of life in a safe environment.

There are two rooms for 2 - 4 volunteers each. Each room has a traditional toilet and shower. There is also a communal kitchen. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared for the volunteers every day.

The accommodation is not far from the project. You can get to your volunteer work within a few minutes either on foot, by motorbike or in a horse-drawn carriage.

RGV FAQ
to the project

How far in advance do I have to register?

Ideally your registration takes place at least 3-6 months before the desired departure date, But also short-term registrations are up 1-2 months before the planned departure is possible.

But it could be that your dream project is already booked. In this case we will try together to find a suitable alternative for you.

Can I travel with a friend or in a group?

Yes! On request we enable a double room if you for two with a friend or a friend, or an apartment or other suitable accommodation for groups.

We are very happy to enable our participants to go on a project and share accommodation with friends. Shared accommodation is usually possible both in the volunteer house and with the host family, although the room in the volunteer house may also be shared with other participants. In some locations there is also the option of sharing an apartment.

When registering, please always mention the person(s) traveling with you!

Can I combine projects?

Yes! You can combine projects at one location, at different locations, but also in different countries. It is also possible to combine a project with a trip. You can specify your desired combination directly when registering.

Combination options at a glance:

  1. Combine programs in one country
  2. Combine programs across countries
  3. Combine a program with a language course
  4. Combine a program with ours Adventure & Trips

There are a few things Project combinations to note: The minimum length of stay per project must be observed and you may incur additional costs for country combinations, for example for an intermediate flight.

What are the project fees used for?

Although we are a non-profit organization, there are costs associated with volunteering abroad. Find out here, why volunteering requires money and what your project fee is used for.

Which visa do I need for Senegal?

You do not need a visa to enter Germany and stay for a maximum of 90 days. If you want to stay longer in the country, a residence permit is required, which can also be applied for locally.

What language skills do I need for the project?

In order to be able to communicate well with the team and the locals on site, you should be able to speak French. But you can also get along in English in the project.

What vaccinations/ health precautions do I need?

If you are traveling from a yellow fever area, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Otherwise there are no compulsory vaccinations.

We generally recommend a consultation in a practice for travel and tropical medicine.

You can get general information about recommended health care and vaccinations online Center for Travel Medicine as well as on the side of Foreign Office.

When does the project always take place?

The project is basically open all year round. Note, however, that Senegal's rainy season runs from July to September. The recommended period for participation is September to December.

What are the requirements for the project?

You don't need any special knowledge to take part in the house building project. Interest in environmental protection, enjoyment of physical work outdoors, initiative and creativity are important. If you already have experience in areas such as agriculture, architecture, education or media, that is of course all the better, but not a requirement.

What do I have to consider as an LGBTQ person?

Please be aware that homosexual acts are considered undesirable in many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and are even punishable by law in some places. In general, people who are identified as queer are often exposed to hostility.

For example, get information from Foreign Office about the exact regulations in your destination country.
