Monastery stay in Sri Lanka
- Life in the Buddhist monastery
- Knowledge sharing
- Digital detox
Rest, Meditation, Digital Detox. Live among monks in a Buddhist monastery for a while and help them with their daily household chores. You will learn a lot about the practices of Buddhism, practice meditation and experience an unusual break from everyday life. On the weekends you can explore the impressive landscapes and cities in Sri Lanka.
Please note: At the moment a stay is only possible in Colombo until further notice.
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
What's the matter?
You live directly in a Buddhist monastery, depending on availability in Galle, Ella or Colombo. Life there is very simple, so be prepared for a few weeks without the internet, parties and appointments. As a woman, you will not be accommodated on the monastery grounds, but in a guest house nearby.
The monasteries are open to all people, regardless of their background, who are willing to delve deeply into the world of Buddhism. Here you can meditate in a peaceful atmosphere and learn about mindfulness and generosity with others while the monks share their knowledge of the Buddha's teachings.
The volunteers learn the principles of Buddhism and learn about Buddhist meditation and culture. This project allows you to gain in-depth knowledge of Thervadha Buddhism and its customs.
Also, you lead a very simple, quiet life during your time in the monastery. A perfect opportunity for a break from everyday life and some digital detox.
Your tasks as a volunteer
During your stay you will take part in the different practices and help with the daily household chores in the monastery. There is also the option of teaching English yourself, giving back to the monks who share their knowledge and time with you.
The monks organize a range of programs including yoga sessions.
Since it is a monastery, there is no concrete work plan. The normal daily routine looks something like this:
The day starts at 4 a.m. After getting up there is a Vandana chant and the first meditation. After that, some housework will be done. At 8am there is breakfast followed by a meeting with a monk who teaches Dhamma. After a break there will be a sangha offering before lunch at 11.30am. After the meal there is a walking meditation. Afterwards there is time to meditate or read together with the monks or alone. After everyone has done their homework again, there will be a Vandana chant and further meditations at 17:40 p.m. Before going to bed at 21 p.m. you have the opportunity to meet with a monk again to discuss any questions you may have.
Monday to Friday you are in the monastery, on the weekends you can travel and explore the area.
Accommodation Catering
Accommodation in the monastery in Sri Lanka
During the project you live as a man directly in the monastery. The accommodation here is very basic, there is no wifi and you share a room with 2-3 other volunteers. Accommodation for female volunteers is organized in a guest house close to the monastery as the monasteries do not offer accommodation for women on their premises. Social events, such as celebrations, are not allowed.
The environment is very quiet and therefore perfect for meditation. At night the volunteers are asked to stay in the monastery or in the guest house. During the day you can explore the site and the different areas on your own.
Location
Galle, Ella, Colombo
The monasteries in Galle, Ella and Colombo are available for the project. Depending on where spaces are available, you will be placed in one of those locations.
All three monasteries are within the city limits. The center can be easily reached by public transport. On the weekends you can explore the city where you are staying in the monastery or the surrounding area. Each location has a lot to offer.
Galle is located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings in the old town, which often date back to the Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial periods, show the history of the place. Here you will find temples, churches and mosques as well as the city's landmarks: the lighthouse and the fortress walls.
Ella is a small town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by tea plantations, you can enjoy the tranquility of the mountains and admire the fascinating landscape. Numerous beautiful forests, waterfalls and caves are nearby.
Columbo is the unofficial capital of Sri Lanka and accordingly a lot bigger than Galle and Ella. The bustling port city on the west coast was once the center of the spice trade. The cityscape is characterized on the one hand by historic colonial buildings, temples and mosques, on the other hand by large parks and modern skyscrapers.
It doesn't matter which of the towns you end up in: You will certainly be able to discover a lot of exciting things! However, the focus remains on your stay in the monastery - so you should above all be willing to do without certain things from your everyday life (such as the internet or celebrations) and devote yourself to meditation.
Your free time in Galle, Ella and Colombo
Once you have decided on this project, you will be assigned to either Galle, Ella or Colombo. Depending on the project location, you have different options for spending your free time. At all three locations you can meditate in a peaceful atmosphere and learn about mindfulness and generosity with others while the monks impart their knowledge of the Buddha's teachings. The monks also offer yoga sessions, which you are welcome to participate in. Since the monasteries are located in the respective cities, you can explore the city in your free time or travel to the surrounding area.
Galle
Galle is located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings in the old town, which date back to the Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial times, show the history of the place. Here you can visit temples, churches or the lighthouse and look out over the sea from the fortress walls.
Ella
The small town of Ella is located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by tea plantations, you can enjoy the tranquility of the mountains and admire the fascinating landscape. The location is ideal for hikes and tours to explore the surrounding area with its forests, waterfalls and caves.
Columbo
Colombo is the unofficial capital of Sri Lanka and accordingly a lot bigger than Galle and Ella. The bustling port city on the west coast was once the center of the spice trade. Here you can visit various museums and parks or see interesting colonial buildings, temples and mosques, such as the "red" mosque Jami Ul-Alfar.
