Turtle and Marine Conservation Volunteer in Tanzania

Your accommodation consists of several bungalows made of natural stone and clay and have a coconut roof. You are right on the beach with 100 m beach area and sea view. The facility even has its own fresh water well and can accommodate up to 12 volunteers. You share a bungalow with another volunteer of the same gender. Showers with running water and toilets are also available. WiFi is not offered here, but there is a good mobile network on the premises.

Meals are half board. You also have the option of ordering food such as french fries with chicken, salad or fish and drinks on site.

The area is considered safe during the day, even if you are out and about alone. At night it is recommended to go in groups and drive directly to the house by car. Your accommodation is about half a kilometer away from the nearest village. The Mtwara Ferry, which goes to Mtwara town every two hours, is two kilometers away. To reach them, you can easily take a motorbike taxi for around 50 cents. The ferry itself only costs 15 cents. For this way you have to plan about 30 minutes. Once in the city, you can walk to markets, shops, workshops and local bars and restaurants in just a few minutes.

Tanzania is located in East Africa, south of the equator and is best known for its diverse landscapes and natural wealth. Particularly well-known are the Serengeti National Park, where you can marvel at the so-called “Big Five” of African wildlife, the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro with its ever-white peak and the tropical islands on the coast. 

The country's wealth of languages ​​is just as diverse as its nature. Up to 125 languages ​​are said to be spoken here today. This diversity is partly due to the fact that Tanzania has always been influenced by many cultures due to its historical function as an important trading hub. In addition to European influences, Arabic and Indian influences are also very evident.

In the southeast of the country, on the Msangamkuu Peninsula near the town of Mtwara, our project site is in close proximity to the beach and the Indian Ocean. So if you love sun, sand and the sea and its inhabitants, this location is perfect for you!

Tanzania has a lot to offer as a travel destination that should not be missed. After work and on days off, you have enough time to relax and explore the area. The location of the project site right by the sea naturally invites you to spend your free time on the beach or in the water. Grab other volunteers to explore the surrounding beaches on foot, snorkel or kayak! Alternatively, you also have the option of booking a sailing boat tour.

If you feel like culture, it is worth taking a trip to the historic town of Mikindani, which you can reach in just under an hour by ferry and bus. The historic city has been under Arabic, Portuguese, German and English rule over the past few centuries, which has given it a lasting multicultural character. Take your time to understand the different influences as you familiarize yourself with the city's eclectic cuisine and architecture. 

Of course, this is only a fraction of what Tanzania has to offer in terms of attractions! Use your time and go on safari in one of the legendary national parks to look out for lions, elephants and rhinos, set out to climb the volcanic Kilimanjaro massif or visit the infamous spice island of Zanzibar with its dream beaches and coral reefs.
