Farm work in Uganda

What's the matter?

Although Uganda is a relatively fertile country, extreme weather conditions and the resulting spread of pests endanger the harvests. This is worrying because around 80% of export earnings are gained from agriculture. The main products are coffee, tea, cotton, tobacco, vanilla, honey, cut flowers and cocoa. Fish is also one of the most successful export goods from Uganda.

Your placement is a non-profit center near Kampala, the capital of Uganda. This operates sustainable agriculture in order to achieve high yields and conserve natural resources. The center includes a poultry farm with laying hens, a livestock farm with goats, pigs, rabbits and cattle, a fish farm and an apiary. In addition, knowledge about sustainable agriculture is passed on to the population in the center.

There are also gardens and beds for growing green tea and various types of vegetables and fruits such as watermelons, bananas and cassava. A tree nursery and cultivation areas for fodder plants are also part of the deployment site. The farming project also produces organic fertilizer and biogas.

The aim of the project work is to disseminate modern cultivation methods and to enable the local population to manage available land sensibly. In addition, the yield of the harvest should be increased. If you enjoy working in the great outdoors and are passionate about sustainable agriculture, then farm work in Uganda is for you!

Your tasks as a volunteer

As a volunteer, you can get involved in all areas. You will work in a team with local colleagues and other volunteers. You help with the poultry farming and at the hatchery. In the field of animal husbandry, you take care of the animals, feed them and help to treat sick animals. In the fish farm you feed the fish, change the water and keep records of the population. Depending on the season, you can also help with the production of honey. In the field of horticulture, you support the preparation of the breeding beds and the cultivation of fruit and vegetables.

You will help with tree planting and help with the production of fertilizers and biogas. If you have the appropriate prior knowledge, you can get involved in training programs. Other possible activities are in the areas of food preparation, visitor tours and website support.

Your working hours may vary. However, you will work a maximum of 40 hours a week and eight hours a day. You have the weekend off. The on-site team will discuss your daily work schedule with you. Breakfast is usually at 8:30 a.m. Excursions to other agricultural centers often take place.

There is a shorter break in the morning and a lunch break. Your life on site is close to nature and varied. The bucket shower and eco-toilet (pit latrine) provide an extra portion of adventure flair!

Accommodation Catering

Accommodation on the farm in Uganda

In Namungongo, Greater Kampala, you will be accommodated with up to 14 other volunteers directly at your place of work. The dormitories have bunk beds, but if you would like a single room, this can be requested for a fee.

The accommodation is equipped with an authentic bucket shower and running electricity. You will also find a typical latrine there. You don't have to worry about your laundry: During your stay, your laundry can be washed for a small fee.

Your breakfast and dinner will also be provided at the project location. If you would like to prepare something yourself or are planning a cooking evening with the other volunteers, you can buy food in the surrounding supermarkets and prepare it in your kitchen!

Location

Greater Kampala region

The metropolis and capital Kampala is located in southern Uganda. Here you will find small busy streets, modern skyscrapers, restaurants and a lively nightlife. So there is a lot to discover!

With a bit of luck you can even see marabou storks hatching their young in the middle of the city center, near the rugby court! Trees and hills adorn the cityscape around the center. The streets are full of so-called boda-bodas - these are bicycle taxis, which most people in Uganda use to get around.

But not only the capital has a lot to offer: the further you drive out of Kampala, the more adventure awaits you during your trip. Kampala is considered Uganda's transport hub, which is why all our projects are located in the greater Kampala area. The capital is also not far from Africa's most famous freshwater lake, "Lake Victoria".

So you've come to the right place if you want to experience Uganda intensively - both life in the metropolis and the landscapes in the surrounding area!

Your free time in the greater Kampala region

Welcome to the Greater Kampala Region! The capital of Uganda is the best place to learn about the country's rich history and culture. For example, you will find the "Uganda Museum" here, which is one of the best museums in Africa with its large collection of cultural and historical treasures. In addition, numerous churches, mosques and other places of worship bear witness to the great heterogeneity and diversity of the country.

Away from the culture you will find many markets, restaurants and bars in the lively city as well as a nightlife that can easily keep up with the European metropolises. Kampala is also a real institution when it comes to street food. “Luwombo”, an elaborate cooking dish that is prepared and served in a banana leaf, is particularly popular.

Do you need a short break from the chaotic city life? Then explore the outskirts of Kampala. Lake Victoria is only a few kilometers away. The coasts and numerous small islands that you will find on Africa's largest lake are definitely worth a visit. And the rest of Uganda is chock-full of must-see attractions if you find the time.

The waterfalls of the Murchison Falls National Park or the Ruwenzori Mountains with peaks over 5000 meters are definitely among them. You should also not miss a tour to see the rare mountain gorillas. Because: The last specimens live exclusively in Uganda and the neighboring countries.

For more (insider) tips, you can also get in touch with your local contact at any time.
