Midwives project Zanzibar

What's the matter?

In Tanzania, a woman has an average of 5,1 children. In comparison, the birth rate in Germany is around 1,38 children per woman. However, only about 42% of births in Tanzania take place under the care of medical staff. Especially in rural areas, mothers often give birth at home and in hygienically unsafe conditions. If life-threatening complications occur during birth, any help often comes too late because the hospitals are too far away. However, thanks to the efforts of the Tanzanian government, great progress has been made in recent years. The infant mortality rate is falling rapidly.

Complete an internship abroad in Tanzania, support the specialist staff and gain insights into local obstetrics. Your internship enables you to expand your medical know-how. You will also acquire intercultural skills. Use the great chance!

Information on recognition and standards for medical internships abroad

Your internship abroad in the field of obstetrics

Who is the midwife internship in Tanzania suitable for?

The internship in the field of obstetrics in Tanzania is suitable for committed people who have completed training in the medical field (e.g. midwife, doctor, nurse) who would like to gain an insight into the work of midwives in an African country striving for development. But you can also complete an orientation internship without any previous knowledge in this area. Working in maternity wards in Tanzania is only possible for females.

Your internship and activities in obstetrics in Zanzibar

In Zanzibar you can do an internship in midwifery in a hospital with different wards. If you decide to do a midwifery internship in Tanzania, you should be aware that the medical standard is significantly lower than in Europe. However, the aim of the hospitals is to improve the standard of hygiene and stimulate the exchange of knowledge.

For you as an intern, it is an important task to educate women about healthy hygiene. You will also take care of mothers and their newborns, both before and after birth. If you have previous knowledge in this area, your knowledge is of great importance. You can help to improve working methods and contribute your own ideas. After consultation with the local specialist staff, it is also possible to get an insight into the research and the processes in the delivery room and in the operating theatre. You are welcome to choose the focus of your internship yourself.

For the cleaning of the station you should not be too bad, because cleanliness is very important in the hospital.

Your internship and your tasks in obstetrics

At the beginning you will mostly sit in and assist the doctors and midwives. After you have settled in, you can also take on more responsible tasks by arrangement. The focus is on the care of mothers and newborns, before and after birth. You can assist with the ultrasound and, if necessary, support with the pre- and aftercare. Your duties may also include laboratory work. If you have completed your training and professional experience, you can take on tasks with more responsibility. It may also be possible to take on administrative tasks.

Possibility to recognize a compulsory internship

If you would like to have your RGV internship abroad recognized as part of your studies or training, be sure to inquire in advance about the regulations of your university or your training company. In this case, please inform us in advance about the templates so that we can take them into account. After completing your RGV stay abroad, you will receive an internship/participation certificate from us.

Your daily work during your midwife internship

Your working hours may vary. But you work no more than 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week. You usually work from Monday to Friday.

Location

Zanzibar.

Turquoise blue, crystal clear sea, white sandy beaches, fascinating sights and lots of outdoor adventures - you can experience all of this while volunteering in Zanzibar!

Historically speaking, the “Island of Spices” has played an important role. Because Zanzibar went down in history as an important hub of Arab and Asian trade relations. In addition to gold, ivory, spices and wood, slaves were also traded here until the 19th century.

The archipelago's capital, Zanzibar Town, has a picturesque waterfront harbour. The mixture of African, Arabic, Indian and European influences that is characteristic of Zanzibar is particularly evident here. Colorful merchant houses with balconies and mango trees line the small streets.

In Zanzibar, a true paradise of dreamlike palm beaches and colourful, lively towns awaits you! Do you like spending time by the sea and want to explore this unique island? Then on to Zanzibar!

Your free time in Zanzibar

“Karibu Sana Zanzibar” – Welcome to Zanzibar! Use your free time, go on excursions with other volunteers or explore historic Stown Town. Turquoise blue, crystal clear sea, white sandy beaches, fascinating sights and lots of outdoor adventures - you can experience all of this in Zanzibar!

Your volunteer program in Zanzibar includes a day trip to Nakupenda Beach. At noon we go together with a boat to Nakupenda Beach, a sandbar, which is located a few kilometers from Stonetown in the middle of the sea. Depending on the tide, the sandbar is larger or smaller. We swim in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and eat and drink together. If the weather and the tides allow, we will stay until the evening and end the evening around a campfire.

In front of Zanzibar's capital, Zanzibar Town, there is a pleasant scent in the air. Huge spice plantations stretch out here, on which turmeric and cinnamon, among other things, are grown. No wonder Zanzibar is also called the island of spices. In the Jozani forest in the south of the island you can, with a bit of luck, spot the rare red colobus monkeys or watch dolphins on the coast of the small town of Kizimkazi.

The old town of Stone Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The colorful merchant houses and the small streets lined with mango trees look like something out of a picture book. Small shops that exude the scent of cloves invite you to buy or at least admire embroidered bags, traditional African clothing and handmade fabrics.

If you have a little more time available, for example after your volunteer work, you can also explore the Tanzanian mainland. How about a safari in the famous Serengeti? Or scale the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro!

The team will show you where you can find the tastiest Tanzanian snacks and where you can have a drink with the other volunteers. Of course, important information on the subject of safety, health and hygiene on site should not be missing. You will also be shown the easiest way to get to your project.
