Namibia Wildlife Resort Review

Working with the young rhino baby was unique and I personally really enjoyed it. The highlights of life on the farm were definitely the game drives, which we were allowed to accompany a few times, and the excursions on which I was sometimes allowed to accompany the owner of the farm. But many other unforgettable things happened.

Jan's time in Namibia

On the adventure Africa!

In October 2012 I went to the Namibia Wildlife Resort for a total of 8 weeks to get involved in animal welfare in Africa. The main reason for my trip was the wildlife project, which I came across through the organization Rainbow Garden Village. RGV organized the transfer from the airport to the camp and helped me with my travel arrangements. Shortly thereafter, my great adventure could begin. My internship abroad in Namibia was actually supposed to take place in a tent camp with the main topic of field biology.

The farm in Namibia

But after my arrival on the farm in the Kalahari Desert, I experienced the first typical "African surprise". It was too hot to live in the camp. So I was quartered with my internship colleague on the farm in a stationary, very spacious tent. Our task was therefore no longer primarily field biology, but we should take care of the young rhino baby Kiacho, which was only cared for a few weeks on the farm because the little one's mother died. That turned out to be a real stroke of luck and probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

A rhino baby and game drives through the desert

Our tasks at the Namibia Wildlife Resort were, for example, preparing milk 5 times a day, fetching new bushes for the little ones with the jeep 2 times a day, or keeping the enclosure clean and enlarging it. The day was pretty much filled with that. Working with the young rhino baby was unique and I personally really enjoyed it. The highlights of life on the farm were definitely the game drives, which we were allowed to accompany a few times, and the excursions on which I was sometimes allowed to accompany the owner of the farm. Many unforgettable things happened. Once there was even a fire on the farm because it was very dry at that time and I had to fight the flames for hours with the farm owners and the farm workers. That was also a unique experience that I was allowed to have in Namibia.

My conclusion to the wildlife project in Namibia

I particularly enjoyed working together with the Bushmen on the farm, and I also developed a friendship with the farm owners. I saw almost all the animals that live on the farm up close, such as rhinos, giraffes, oryx antelopes and zebras. This was one of my main reasons why I really wanted to do a project with animals in Africa and this wish was fully fulfilled on this trip. Unfortunately, after the 4 weeks on the farm, my project was already over and I then went on a 4-week safari through southern Africa. Overall these 8 weeks in Africa have been an amazing time and I will probably be returning to Africa again soon!
