My volunteer work in the maritime environmental protection project in Greece

In June 2020, I participated in the RGV marine surveillance field research program, where I worked closely with other volunteers and the on-site team to monitor seaweed populations and better understand the impact of nearby fish farms on the health and vitality of this endangered species.

European environmental policy

This experience was not only personally enriching, but also gave me the opportunity to learn about European environmental policy - all while living and working on one of the most beautiful islands in the world :-)

My arrival

The team on site was very courteous - I had support with the journey to find this remote island and RGV provided me with detailed background and travel information in the Reise ABC in advance to make my journey safe and easy.

My accommodation

Once there, I lived in the research station for volunteers, which is equipped with bunk beds and a kitchen with everything you need. Ted oversaw my research and was kind enough to make frequent trips to nearby places to buy essential research supplies and anything else I needed.

Experts on site

Ted is extremely knowledgeable about the ecology of the island and I learned so much from his explanations of the island's flora and fauna and the political context of environmental policies in Europe and specifically Greece. He lives for the project and is very enthusiastic and open to new ideas from volunteers.

My recommendation

I would recommend this program to anyone who is interested in a practical field research experience in which one learns something about the unique flora and fauna of the Mediterranean area, how the association works, and how innovative and non-profit research can be used for the cause of environmental protection . Thanks to everyone involved for this great experience.
